Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles - [Charlie] I'm Charlie Puth and this is How It Went Down. How did How Long start? It was summer, I was just about to go on tour with my buddy Shawn Mendes and I put on Hall and Oats and I heard (vocalizing) I was like okay, I wanna make a record like that. I called my buddy Mike Caren, who happens to be my A and R, one of my A and R's, and I was on the phone with him, and I was like wouldn't it be cool if there was, like, a song called How Long Has This Been Going On? And each kick drum would be on the lyric. (vocalizing) I think I actually put it in F sharp minor first (vocalizing) and then he was like that sounds pretty good, you should go record that. I had one broken rocket speaker to produce this record on. Every night after I would get off stage, I just kind of built the track out even more and I still want it to be, thematically, with a bass. (vocalizing) And my base player Dmitry came in and he had this sick pre- like, this sick preamp and he plugged it in and it sounded like bouncy. (vocalizing) It sounded like me walking with, like, a big cup of coffee down the street. (vocalizing) Like, like Fat Albert or like Mickey Mouse when he drops the piano. It's just like (vocalizing) Like bouncy. I had basically the song all in my head and it was just a matter of dissecting what was in my mind and just pulling it out of my mind and just putting it into prosols. Computer. ♪ How long as this been going on ♪ ♪ You've been acting so shady ♪
