The Intern 高年級實習生!
"The Intern" is a movie from late last year
The Intern 是去年下半年所推出的電影
And the main characters are the well-known
那兩位核心主角是大家一點都不陌生的
Anne Hathaway and Robert de Niro
Anne Hathaway 跟 Robert de Niro
I believe we were all very curious about how this mysterious combination
那相信當時大家也非常好奇這個神奇的組合
bring out their wonderful performance
會帶給觀眾什麼樣令人驚豔的表現
There are also some great, useful lines in this movie
那這部電影裡面有很多很棒很實用的台詞喔
so let's check them out!
那我們就一起看看有哪一些吧!
I read once
I read once
“Musicians don't retire
“Musicians don’t retire
they stop when there's no more music in them.”
they stop when there’s no more music in them.”
Well, I still have music in me, absolutely positive about that!
Well, I still have music in me, absolutely positive about that!
我心中還有音樂,這點毋庸置疑
我心中還有音樂,這點毋庸置疑
The previous quote
那前面的那一句 quote
“Musicians don't retire, they stop when there's no more music in them.”
「音樂家不會退休,他們心中再無音樂時才會收手」
is from Louis Armstrong, the American Jazz Musician.
是美國爵士音樂家 Louis Armstrong 所說過的話
Well I think it's quite beautiful so I mentioned it here
那我覺得蠻淒美的所以一起剪進來
Ben wanted to say that, if he were a musician
這裡 Ben 是要表達,如果他是音樂家的話
and there is still great music in his heart making him continue
他心中還有好多好多音樂讓他可以持續做下去
It means that he still has many inspirations and things he want to do in his life
那其實就是代表,他(人生)還有非常多的靈感跟想做的事
so he wish to achieve them by an internship
所以想要透過實習的機會去實現他們
"Absolutely" means 完全、絕對
Absolutely 是「完全,絕對」
while "positive" is 正面、正向, which means 確定、相信
那 positive 就是正面,正向,也就是「確定、相信」的意思
Hi, Jules
Hi, Jules
I'm Ben, your new intern

I'm glad you also see the humor in this

It'll be hard not to

We usually think that
通常我們知道的都是
interns are young people who learn social experience by going to companies
還沒有出社會的年輕人會去公司當實習生學習經驗
But Ben, as an experienced person
那當 Ben 這種閱歷豐富的人
was assigned as a private intern to the company founder, Jules
被指派到公司創辦者 Jules Ostin 當私人實習生的時候
Both Jules and Ben thought this situation was funny
其實 Jules 跟 Ben 都覺得這個狀況還蠻滑稽的
The "humour" in "See the humor in this" means 幽默
See the humor in this 這邊的 humor 的意思是「幽默」
If you want to say 「你這個人很幽默風趣」
那如果你想要形容「你這個人很幽默風趣」的話
you can say "you have a good sense of humor”
你可以說 "you have a good sense of humor”
"it'll be hard not to" means「很難不去這樣做」
那 it’ll be hard not to 就是「很難不去這樣做」
which means "any one would think its ridiculous if they saw this situation"
也就是「任誰看了這狀況,都會覺得很奇妙」
W...why?

Erm, what, am I too inexperienced at running a business?

是說因為我不按牌理出牌才要這樣嗎?
是說因為我不按牌理出牌才要這樣嗎?
但是,我們不就是因為這樣才能有今天的成就嗎?
但是,我們不就是因為這樣才能有今天的成就嗎?
Jules was informed that the investors
這邊 Jules 突然被告知公司的投資者
are hiring a new CEO for the company
要從外面找一位 CEO 來幫忙公司的事情
so she was stunned and sad after she heard the news
因此 Jules 聽到之後感到非常的錯愕跟難過
"Methods" means 方法、方式
Methods 就是「方法、方式」
and "by the book" is a common usage
而 by the book 是一個常見的英文用法
which means 照章辦事、或是按著規矩行事
也就是照章辦事、或是按著規矩行事
You can also say “according to the rules"
那你也可以說 “according to the rules"
Hi, honey
Hi, honey
Hey
Hey
Over the hump
Over the hump
度過難關
度過難關
Though Ben had just joined the company
雖然 Ben 才剛進公司不久
he already noticed the industriousness of Jules
但是努力付出、盡力把一切做到最好的 Jules 他都看在眼裡
so he reminded her
因此他在這邊提醒 Jules
to never forget who the credit of bringing this company success belongs to.
不要忘記是誰的功勞跟努力才能讓公司如此的成功
"Hump" is 一個隆起來的小圓丘
Hump 這邊的意思是一個隆起來的小圓丘
So "Over the hump"
那既然已經 over the hump
is successfully stepping over this 小圓丘
也就是成功的跨越這個小圓丘
which means the hardest part is conquered
代表已經克服最困難的部分了
How is it that you always manage to say the right thing...
How is it that you always manage to say the right thing...
do the right thing...
do the right thing...
be the right thing?
be the right thing?
It's uncanny.
It’s uncanny.
為什麼你總是有辦法說出最恰當的話
為什麼你總是有辦法說出最恰當的話
做出最正確的事、當一個最完美的存在呢?
做出最正確的事、當一個最完美的存在呢?
真的很不可思議
真的很不可思議
All these shipping problems, website malfunctions
一整天下來的出貨問題、網頁功能問題
and the terrible incident of mistakenly sending the email complaining about mom to her
還有把偷婊媽媽的信件不小心寄給本人的恐怖事件
made Jules feel really pressured
讓 Jules 承受了龐大的壓力
But Ben could always let her feel better
但是 Ben 總是能讓她心情變得好
which Jules thought this was wonderful
讓 Jules 感到非常的奇妙
Usually, when we want to say「某人做了某事」
通常如果我們要講「某人做了某事」
we might say, "do something"
我們可能會說 "do something”
But the “manage to do something” here
但是這邊的 “manage to do something” 有種
has a meaning of「他竟然有能力、有辦法可以做到這樣子的事情」
「他竟然有能力、有辦法可以做到這樣子的事情」
They say you can't put the genie back in the bottle but...
They say you can’t put the genie back in the bottle but...
we can try, right?
we can try, right?
人們說,覆水難收,但是我們可以試試看,對嗎?

Jules, who wanted to save her marriage and family life
想要拯救家庭跟婚姻的 Jules
had finally made up her mind to hire a CEO
終於下決心要聘請 CEO 來幫忙
Though this made her sad, she still hoped that in the end
雖然這讓她痛心,但是她希望這麼做之後
everything would go back to the happy life it used to be
一切都能夠回復到原本幸福的模樣
Basically, we can see "Genie" as the one in Aladdin's lamp
Genie 基本上大家可以認知為是阿拉丁神燈裡的神燈精靈
So the idiom "Can't put the genie back in the bottle" means
那 "can’t put the genie back in the bottle" 這個英文諺語就是在說
「已經發生的事情,你沒有辦法挽回」
「已經發生的事情,你沒有辦法挽回」
Another idiom similar to
同樣跟 "can’t put the genie back in the bottle"
"can't put the genie back in the bottle" is
也有 (另外一個) 相近的說法就是
"no use crying over spilt milk”
"no use crying over spilt milk”
which is 「打翻的牛奶,你再怎麼哭也沒有辦法把它復原」
也就是「打翻的牛奶,你再怎麼哭也沒有辦法把它復原」
It's moments like this
It’s moments like this
when you need someone you know you can count on
when you need someone you know you can count on
So, thank you
So, thank you
就是在這種時候
就是在這種時候
你需要一個你知道你能依靠的人
你需要一個你知道你能依靠的人
Jules, who had decided to hire a CEO,
原本已經決定要聘請 CEO 的 Jules
came back to Ben at the last moment
在最後關頭又去找了 Ben
This was because she still hoped to have someone persuading her
因為其實她內心非常希望有個人能勸勸她
not to compromise with the situation
不要因為事態的發展而最終妥協犧牲
"Moments" can be replaced by "times"
Moments 可以用 times 來去替換
which also has the meaning of 「時機、時候」
一樣都是代表「時機、時候」的意思
"Can count on" means
那 "can count on” 就是
「可以相信、可以依靠」
「可以相信、可以依靠」的意思
All the above are some classic lines in "The Intern"
