I definitely think Drake is up there, though. I would even credit him almost to the "sad boy" movement. - People will look back at his quality of music. I don't think so. I think they'll look at people like Childish Gambino, people that are putting out good messages. - (FBE) Well, when Drake first burst into the rap scene, he was met with some criticism for being too soft due to singing about his emotions over love and heartbreak instead of rapping about things that felt more traditionally related to hip-hop culture. - Okay. He has a niche and he caters to that niche and that's why people like him. - (FBE) So do you think Drake has been in some way responsible for a cultural shift in which lyrics about feelings and emotions is more accepted within mainstream rap? - I wouldn't be surprised at all. I think, I mean, someone has to do it, right, and the fact that he got criticism and continued to do it, that definitely shows a lot of young men especially that it's okay to talk about your feelings. - Absolutely, because rap was kinda hardcore and very battleground. I like that Drake talked about his feelings and stuff, even though people called him soft. - Absolutely, even-- especially in music. Even in people's personal lives, a lot of-- I feel like there's this whole stigma with men where it's almost you can't have these certain feelings. But Drake instead was like, "[Bleep] that. That's exactly what's driving my music right now, so that's what I'm gonna talk about in my rap." - I don't think that's a thing at all. Rock evolves, hip-hop evolves, and I just think we're in that state right now of hip-hop, I guess, of that subgenre of emotions. - (FBE) Since Drake's debut, he's been a part of a handful of memes and trends, including the Wheelchair Jimmy memes, the Hotline Bling memes, and then the #InMyFeelings challenge. - I've seen some memes, but I'm not really on the lookout for Drake memes because he's not super relevant to me. - They almost kind of poke fun at him. It still hasn't really hindered his success. If anything, it's made him so much more popular. - (FBE) Do you think all these memes and trends distract from the fact that he's so accomplished and has broken so many records over the last several years, or does it add to his appeal? - No, that only helps. It's just what happens when you get popular. If I became a meme like that, that means you made it. - I think it adds to it, but his music is bigger than the memes. - It just adds to his appeal. The guy Shiggy did a challenge with it and he put Shiggy on. That got everybody doing the challenge. - You have to have a certain amount of notoriety for memes to be made of you. I think, obviously, memes are a little bit derogatory, or they're making fun of you, but you have to have that acclaim for people to want to make fun of you. - It adds to it because, I mean, you can even see it when he does stuff like SNL. It makes him more popular, knowing that he can laugh at himself a little bit. - (FBE) So, finally, do you think Drake is at his pinnacle at the moment or do you think that he's only gonna get bigger and bigger from here? - Well, I thought he had already reached his pinnacle with Hotline Bling, but the fact that he's picking back up again, maybe he'll get bigger. - He's only gonna get bigger from here. You know men, as they age, they get finer. They could do all kinds of different stuff, you know, so he ain't just one trick little pony. Five, ten years, I think he's still gonna be hot. - He'll get bigger. I mean, I don't see it slowing down. It's only picking up speed. I wish this was his pinnacle, just for my ears only. - It's his pinnacle right now and I think he's maybe at his plateau. New artists are gonna come and take over the music industry, specifically for rap. - He's gonna go into a decline afterwards because, you know, when you achieve success of this amount, you're probably not gonna enjoy it for the next couple years.
