  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Adverb Phrase 5. The adverb phrase today

  • is sight-unseen. Okay. So let's take a look at the note

  • here. If something is sight-unseen, it is without inspection. So you don't get to

  • look at it or at least you don't get to look at it very closely or appraisal. You

  • don't have anybody going to appraise it or judge it , to let you know maybe the true

  • value of it. So that's what we mean if you buy something sight unseen or if you get

  • something sight unseen. Buy is probably the most common verb used with

  • this or we could definitely use other verbs that also have something to do

  • with buy. You could purchase something sight unseen, or get something or bargain

  • for something sight unseen. So you can use other verbs with it but buy is

  • probably the main one. All right. Anyway, let's take a look at some examples here.

  • Never buy any property sight unseen. You know I remember years ago when I was a

  • kid, I think at that time they sold it through like magazines or something in

  • there I remember they had like a commercial where they they showed you on

  • TV that people bought some land sight unseen and then they found out the land

  • was like in the desert or something like that. But today of course you know if

  • somebody was buying some land far away they may get to see some photos of it

  • but just just like anything else was like a house or something you know those

  • photos are probably always taken from the best angles and you're getting the

  • best possible picture of the best possible look of it. So it still may not

  • be what you what you think or what you imagine. So it's still kind of sight

  • unseen because you haven't physically seen it

  • you haven't physically been able to really inspect it so they always say

  • they definitely like with property or a house. Never buy any sight unseen in that

  • sort of sense. All right number two. Even though you can see photos of items on

  • the Internet some people still feel uncomfortable buying items sight unseen.

  • Even though to be honest with you know, many people have gotten great deals on

  • the Internet and sometimes the item does look exactly

  • like the photos. But there is still some risk. Sometimes it's not exactly like the

  • photo or the material was it's not what you thought it was or was made of or

  • maybe didn't look the same in real life as it looked in the photo. So we still

  • say this. Or number three I never liked the idea of buying a grab-bag. Yeah.

  • Sometimes I've seen this like in flea markets or other places they'll just

  • have a brown paper bag and they'll just have the price on the bag. So a grab bag

  • is kind of like a surprise bag. Usually they're generally pretty cheap but you

  • really don't know what's inside of it. That's I guess that's part of the

  • novelty of it. That it's that it's a surprise . It's a grab bag , so they'll just

  • throw a bunch of probably cheaper items in there and you get what you get.

  • Hopefully you're satisfied with it. But that's what they mean by a grab bag. It's

  • supposed to be a little bit of a surprise and they put a little price on

  • it. But still you don't know what's inside. Who knows what's there ? Maybe

  • you'll be very unhappy and say " this isn't worth it.

  • So let's read it again I never liked the idea of buying a grab bag because all

  • the items contained inside are sight unseen. So you don't get to see them

  • before time. It's meant to be like a surprise bag. Okay anyway, I hope you got

  • it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
