  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 203. The idiom today is to grease

  • one's palms. Okay. Let's continue with the note here. This idiom could also be heard

  • as to oil ones palms as well. So you can grease ones palms or oil ones palms. All

  • right. Let's continue. If someone tries to grease or oil ones palms, it means he or

  • she tries to make usually an illegal payment to someone in exchange for

  • favors or influence. So basically it means to offer a bribe, you're offering

  • somebody a bribe. You're greasing their palms. All right. Let's continue. This idiom

  • does originally come from the idea of adding grease to a machine or wheels to

  • make it run more smoothly and with less problems. All right. Let's continue. Thus if

  • you offer people extra money it will often help to make the solution you know,

  • the solution to the problem run more smoothly and help to speed it up without

  • issues. So maybe you can try to help make the problem go away by giving money by

  • bribing somebody. Basically that's what it means. Okay. Let's continue let's look

  • at example number one. Anytime a country tries to host a major event like the

  • Olympics , the World Cup, etc. they must provide proof of the ability to sponsor

  • the event. You know these include sports facilities, you know like arenas or stadiums. A

  • convenient transportation system because you know supposedly they need to take

  • care of a lot of people. So they need probably a subway system or very good

  • bus public buses or whatever. Puble transportation system, accommodations you

  • know hotels. If you should enough hotels for all the people that should come to

  • this event etc. However many believe you need

  • to grease some palms in order to get serious consideration. So you need those

  • other things , but you know you really need, if you grease the palms

  • maybe it'll help a lot in you being the one that is selected. So a lot of people

  • say that sometimes the way it works or that helps a lot.

  • All right. Let's continue. Number two. If you want that information you're going

  • to have to grease some palms. So nobody's going give it to you for free. But you

  • know we always see this in the movies maybe somebody will offer somebody like

  • $100 or $50.You know they like some of these questions they'll just put the

  • money there, and if then they'll tell them that information. And then then

  • they'll pick up the money, Something like that. Okay

  • anyway , I hope you got it . I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye
