Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Lesson 334. The title of today's lesson is to be popular with or among, not to. All right now, it's very common that students of ESL you know, English as a second language may sometimes say something is popular to someone. You should be using with or among. This is one where you know foreigners or Westerners may understand it, but it's more proper to use with. So let's look at some examples. Again with the X, this is wrong. We might say horror movies are popular to young people. No. You should be saying horror movies are popular with young people or horror movies are popular among young people. Yes. So we know, the young crowd, especially teenagers you know, college students, people in their early 20s, maybe even up to 30. Usually horror movies are more popular with. So they're you know, that's the target audience for them. Okay. Let's look at the second one here. Again with the X this is wrong. Doing Tai Chi in the park every morning is popular to senior citizens. No. Again this is another one where you know, a foreigner or a Westerner will understand, but it's better to say doing Tai Chi in the park every morning is popular with senior citizens or among senior citizens. Yeah. In Asia, it's very, very common. As soon as the Sun rises in the morning a lot of retired people might go out there and it's you know, kind of a fun thing for them to do. As they might all do Tai Chi together or many people might do this. All right. Let's look at the third one here. Again with the X. This is wrong. She was very famous about 20 years ago. Now her music is popular to the middle-aged crowd. No. Again you should say she was very popular about 20 years ago. Now her music is popular with the middle-aged crowd or among the middle-aged crowd. So this would be the correct way to say it.This is the most proper way. Anyway I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
