Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is idioms 265. The idiom today is no bones
about it. Okay, Let's take a look at the the note. If someone has no bones about something,
it refers to the idea that one has no doubt about something. So really it can be
used two ways. One it could be used that you know, you're certain you have no
doubt about it. Or that someone is not at all against
something. So if you have no bones about it, you're not complaining about it. That
means you're okay with it. You will go for it. You have no bones about it.
All right. Let's, let's continue here. Let's look at the origin. The origin of
this phrase is believed to have appeared around the 15th century in regard to a
diner. You know, somebody who's eating at a restaurant. A diner being unhappy about
finding bones in his soup. Bones therefore meant bad or unhappy about
something. Basically dissatisfied. No bones in turn
you know , the opposite way in turn means good. Or not having any objection to.
So you weren't against it. So this is how it came about. All right. And we have
three examples here to try to cover this. Let's look at number one. This is a
common way we might hear it. There are no bones about it. So this one means like
no doubt about it. That you're certain about something. There are no bones about
it. He is the best there ever was. Maybe they're talking about, I don't know maybe
a ballplayer or a movie star. They're saying that he's the best. So there's no
bones about it. No doubt about it. You're certain about it. Okay. Let's look at number
two. I think he is satisfied. I think he's happy. He didn't make any bones
about it. So remember you know, if you make bones about something that means
you're unhappy. So if you don't make bones than you're okay. So I think he's
satisfied. He didn't make any bones about it. So he didn't complain about it like
he was against it, so he must be okay with it. He must at least be
satisfied with it. Okay. And number three here. She makes no bones about it. Meaning
in this sense it means like she does it. She doesn't try to hide it.
She, she doesn't leave any doubt about it. So there's no doubt about it. So she's
really obvious about this. This is another way we could use it. She makes no
bones about it. she clearly or obviously expresses her
dislike for that politician. So she doesn't leave any mystery. She doesn't
leave any doubt. She doesn't make any bones about it. She definitely expresses
herself and lets people know exactly how she feels, at least about that politician
anyway. Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope its clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-
bye.
