  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 65. The proverb today is "All is

  • fair in love and war. " Okay. Let's take a look at the note here.

  • The earliest known origin of this proverb came from John Lilly's novel

  • ' Euphues, The Anatomy of Wit' published in 1579. John Lilly's quote is 'The rules of

  • fair play, do not apply in love and war. " Yeah. Basically we have a couple of other

  • authors that sometimes are credited with it because they have similar quotes in

  • their novels. Cervantes and Frances Medley had used similar versions of this

  • quote. The quote is often sometimes also credited to Shakespeare, but they say

  • that's not really correct. They can't find any evidence of him saying this.

  • Even though to be honest, it sounds very much like a Shakespeare quote. So it's

  • sort of typical of what one of his quotes would be. All right. Let's continue.

  • The proverb today basically is used to suggest that in regard to love, don't

  • expect anyone to follow or abide by any rules. Okay. Even though according to the

  • UN there are some international laws concerning war. When you are actually

  • engaged in one, when you're actually taking part in one when you're engaged

  • in one, don't expect your opponent will follow them. Even some countries that

  • claim to follow these rules, you cannot be sure what they are doing behind the

  • scenes. You know maybe they are breaking the

  • rules. You know in secret and but pretending

  • they are following them in the public. Okay, okay.

  • Let's continue here. You cannot be sure what they are doing behind the scenes in

  • war. Both will do almost anything to win or

  • survive. All right. Let's continue in regard to love, many may not like to call

  • it a war, but few can deny there are a lot of battles or struggles for power in

  • both situations. People could behave in a desperate way and you know sometimes we

  • say desperate people do desperate things. and the rules about being just or fair

  • tend to go out the window. Nobody pays attention to them anymore in order to

  • get the desired result. Okay, anyway. I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank

  • you for your time. Bye-bye.
