  • If you got a whiff of maple syrup or lemon and sugar wafting through the air today it's

  • probably because millions of people around the world were tucking into a tasty stack

  • of pancakes! But it's not just because they were hungry there's actually a lot more to

  • it and it's all to do with Easter.

  • So guys what's with the pancakes??

  • Well today's Shrove Tuesday and it's a Christian tradition to eat pancakes.

  • Mmm they look pretty yummy don't they! So why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?

  • Well it's the beginning of Lent so we take all the rich foods from our house such as

  • eggs, butter, milk and all sorts of food like that and make pancakes.

  • Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts. That's when Christians sacrifice something

  • to kind of copy the sacrifice Jesus made. It goes for 40 days up until Easter Sunday.

  • Historians say Shrove Tuesday's been around for centuries, although it's changed a little

  • bit since those days!

  • It's usually food but it could be social media or something fun they like to do.

  • If you guys had to give anything up for lent what would you give up?

  • Probably electronics. Chocolate.

  • So, today means people can use up the foods that might not be allowed during Lent, while

  • also practising something that's important to their religion. Plus these things also

  • make a pretty delicious recess!

  • The best thing about pancakes is the toppings! Some of my favourites are jam and strawberries.

  • Mmm me too. Now if you'll excuse us we've got some eating to do. Let's tuck in!
