Maurice is sitting in this sort of wicker... a big wicker chair, and Clive is sitting on the floor in front of him, kind of leaning against his knees, and they've been talking and sort of overcome, in a sense, with affection, and you could say desire also. Maurice reaches out to embrace Clive... ... and Clive slightly raises himself up from the chair, and they're just about to kiss for the first time, and in that movement, the chair makes a very creaky — it was nothing planned. This was an old chair, but, you know, the weight of their bodies and the movement and everything made it creak in a — Well, all I can say is in a very sexy kind of way. And then, just at that moment, when they're just about to kiss, a bunch of their friends from college come trough the door, banging through the door, they want to take Maurice off to — I think to a game. [Voices in the distance grow louder] "We want tea! We need tea! We demand tea!" "Hello, Durham." So, their moment is spoiled and lost, and they're almost discovered, and it's a... It would've been a terrible thing for them had they been discovered, because it was... They both would've been expelled from Cambridge for sure and might have faced criminal charges. All love affairs need a first moment of that kind. I mean, that's what that was. You reach that point, you know, in a relationship, and that's what — they had got to that point. And then immediately, that scene is followed by Clive declaring his love for Maurice. He says, "I love you," and Maurice is shocked. "How'd you mean?" "You'll understand, and I don't have to explain." "Understand what?" "That I love you." "That's all rubbish." "Durham?" "Durham, come back!" [Friend calls to Maurice]
