  • Hello everyone.

  • I'm Tom Cook and welcome to the midday.

  • I'm here with today with re Barry.

  • Hello, good morning to all of you and we are going to get right to some headlines.

  • So a Dayton ISD middle school student in a very tragic story has died after being hit by a vehicle this morning.

  • It happened around 6:47 a.m. on highway 321 near country road 676.

  • It's about two miles north of Dayton High School.

  • A student has been identified as 14 year old Tyrese Manigo, an eighth grader at Woodrow Wilson Junior High school officials say Tyrese was trying to cross highway 321 when he was hit by a vehicle that was heading southbound.

  • He did die at the scene and the driver did stay there.

  • No charges are expected but a truly sad story.

  • It is meantime, a good Samaritan stopped to help someone.

  • This young woman has now been declared brain dead and the man who hit her is now facing intoxication, manslaughter charges.

  • Police now tell us the man, Zachary Castro had six beers and four shots before he got behind the wheel and killed Myrick Ospina and three other drivers were also hit.

  • They had stopped to help that disabled car that was in a ditch off Barker Cypress.

  • Early Monday morning, Castro reportedly ran into one of the cars then hit the people and Ospina was originally in critical condition until she was declared brain dead last night.

  • He has already posted bond and he is out of jail, but he could go to prison for a long time if he is convicted.

  • Yeah.

  • Well, two thieves who allegedly stole expensive truck parts were caught after they led police on a chase overnight.

  • This went from Northwest Houston all the way to Northeast Houston.

  • One of those thieves police say is just 15 years old.

  • They were caught by an off duty officer about 230 this morning at West 38th Street and Shepard, they had a stash of catalytic converters in their truck.

  • And the thieves also had apparently stolen those from warehouse trucks, taking the catalytic converters off the trucks.

  • They uh then hopped a fence and led police on a chase.

  • It ended on Brecher in Northeast Houston.

  • And those two men are now in custody and looking ahead to the weekend and an area you will want to avoid.

  • Alisa Revis is joining us with uh Tom headache.

  • A major closure happening for many weekends to come.

  • If you have this weekend off Saturday and Sunday, thumbs up to you if you have to take the West Loop somewhere thumbs down to you the Wesley northbound and southbound.

  • A total closure of all main lanes starting Friday night at nine o'clock going all the way through Monday morning and not just this weekend, every single weekend, four weekends, all the way through February 24th, you know, this interchange is under construction.

  • They are doing some bridge beam work, so a lot of work going on right over this interchange, they have to close all the main lanes for it.

  • So just be aware, use those alternate routes.

  • They will be busy, but we have real time traffic data for you all the time at ABC thirteen.com/traffic and available via our news app as well.

  • Ok.

  • You know that expression, you can't get there from here.

  • You don't want to get there from here, right?

  • Ok.

  • It's gonna be a mess.

  • So that's some difficult news to listen to.

  • Let's talk about something good to.

  • Ok, why don't we?

  • Ok.

  • So I have a question for you if Children were taught kindness and giving a preschool, do you think it could change the world?

  • I think so.

  • Yeah, I at a time.

  • Well, you would be agreeing with one school in New Jersey who thinks the same the learning experience preschool teaches Children under five, the meaning of kindness and philanthropy.

  • The owner of the preschool says Children under five years old are just little sponges who soak everything up and they quickly learn that taking that help others and giving back will make the world a better place.

  • We so agree.

  • It's all part of today's local issue.

  • She says those kids under the age of five already know the word philanthropy.

  • They know the meaning of it, giving back to others and giving away some of what you have to help others.

  • How about that?

  • That's sweet.

  • Let's take a look at this.

  • Our curriculum is very meaningful but it's also fun.

  • So Children are learning, but they're also singing songs that go along with our philanthropy.

  • They have little readers.

  • Um for every word of the month, we have a different focus.

  • So for instance, this month it's give.

  • So our Children are learning what give really does mean.

  • Um And for some of our little ones, those are pretty big words.

  • But you go into a classroom and you say you ask them, what are you learning today?

  • And they might say to you philanthropy and they can actually even tell you what that means.

  • Tom, you're sore.

  • I didn't know what that word really meant until I almost wanna say college when I had to do it with our sorority.

  • So I love that.

  • So for more local stories on Abc thirteen.com/local Ish, we're also on Facebook and Instagram.

  • Let's go check in now with our girl Chelsea.

  • Hey, everybody.

  • Happy Friday.

  • Yes, we're not quite there, but we're gonna hook you up with a digital deal of the day.

  • Take a look.

  • It is these lounge pants for boys and they have Astros logos all over them.

  • You get them for half off for just 15 bucks.

  • Right now.

  • You can find this deal on ABC 13 mobile app.

  • All right, calling all ladies, sorry gents.

  • But this is for all of our mamas and daughters and sisters and all of our women out there.

  • The fell is officially back for 2020 sore.

  • She located in Upper Kirby is hosting their fell.

  • Once again, this mother daughter boutique has this sell twice a year and unbelievable prices.

  • So here's how it works.

  • You can choose from a small medium or large paying a flat fee of 5100 or $200.

  • And this time around there will be a limit of five items for the small bag, 12 items for the medium bag and unlimited as much as you can stop shop until you drop for the $200 back guys last year.

  • Whenever I tested this out, I was able to save $700 filling up this bag and trust me, I filled it to the and the sale is actually kicking off tomorrow morning.

  • So mark your calendars kicks off tomorrow morning.

  • 9 a.m. runs through 6 p.m. and then it will also run on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. New this year, jewelry is involved in the sale.

  • You can purchase a smaller bag for 50 bucks and you can throw in 10 pieces of jewelry.

  • So you're really seeing quite the savings there as well.

  • All right.

  • So, um, are you all ready?

  • Are you ready to Rodeo Jerry?

  • Yay.

  • I needed a hat.

  • Ok.

  • Well, you're gonna wanna dust off that cowboy hat and your boots because Rodeo Houston is just one month away.

  • I can't wait for all the fried food.

  • Ok.

  • But right now Rodeo Houston needs your help.

  • If you're looking for a part time job, they're hiring right now.

  • The rodeo will need more than a hun 1000 workers to make this show run as smoothly as possible.

  • They're looking to fill jobs such as cashiers, ticket takers and bag checkers as well as security.

  • So all of this is for part time work.

  • The job there is happening Saturday, February 1st from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and you will be working for air market and contemporary staff services as that part time employee.

  • But you do have to register before you show up.

  • So we have everything you need to know about the 2020 staff scramble.

  • I love that, that scramble dad joke.

  • Sorry, sorry guys for Jerry.

  • Ok.

  • Well, um this next story is a little bit interesting.

  • I'm gonna call him Bree and Tom for this one because excuse me, just a second.

  • It's a good thing the rodeo is coming up because you are looking a little low on cholesterol and that fried food should just about cure you.

  • I apparently a hat.

  • Yeah, I do, I do need, we're gonna work on it.

  • We're gonna get there.

  • Ok.

  • So this next story for the first time in four years, life expectancy has gone up.

  • I know it's great.

  • It's really good news.

  • But I mean, ok, so just hear me out, babies are now expected to live an average of 78 years and eight months.

  • But that's only up one month.

  • So, i it's better than being down one month.

  • This is because of the reasons, the reasons are really good.

  • So here, let's get to that.

  • So that's um for both genders combined.

  • The CDC is actually saying men are expected to live 76 years and two months.

  • Well, women go women five years longer, 81 years and one month.

  • So that longer life expectancy is due to lower death rates for cancer and drug overdoses is ru and I wonder if the higher rates for women, if there's some theories out there, I'm sure, you know, I've heard the men say because the women complain so much.

  • You stand by.

  • Your wife is ready to go.

  • Oh, yeah, for sure.

  • See, my lips weren't moving, just we're, we're overpowering you right now.

  • I'm not commenting on it.

  • I have to go home today.

  • All right.

  • Take a look.

  • This is the latest tribute to Kobe Bryant.

  • This is a field in California and the grass has been mowed in his image.

  • This is in the bay area.

  • Yeah, this California co couple put together a grass mural.

  • Look at this 115 ft tall by 92 ft wide and is really only visible.

  • I mean, they can say you can only see the outlines of it and get the full picture from the air of right there.

  • So this is our sister station's helicopter that caught the detail.

  • Isn't that amazing?

  • Now, it's only gonna last a couple of days.

  • I'm not sure why you would think it would last longer than that.

  • Obviously, the grass grows back.

  • I know they're expecting a little bit of rain.

  • But that is really all of these tributes pouring out across the country for a world, really for Kobe is just extraordinary and honestly, the murals are beautiful, was beautiful, but the one that has touched me the most is hashtag girl dad on Twitter and Instagram.

  • And I know that all of our girl dads here at ABC 13 actually put together some pictures of all of you guys with your daughter.

  • So that one is a beautiful one, for sure, for sure.

  • All right guys.

  • Well, thank you so much for joining us today on the midday.

  • We hope you have a great afternoon.

  • Go rodeo.

  • Well, not yet.

  • Well, yeah, Houston.
