Roy had a short stay at North Texas, but it was an important
time for him at the same time.
When Roy was there, we had a saturday night stage show, and
at the Saturday night stage show, there were two guys from the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity
that had
a little song that just drove
the whole
audience ...
They were just crazy about it.
this song was called "Ooby Dooby."
Singing: "Hey baby, jump over here. When you do the Ooby Dooby, I just gotta be near! Ooby Dooby ..."
And Roy
started hanging out at the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity
because he wanted to get their permission to record that song.
And that did turn out to be
the impetus, if you will,
for Roy's career.
Roy Orbison speaking:
I made a demonstration record called "Ooby Dooby"
and uh...
sent that thing to Sam Phillips in Memphis, Tennessee.
He asked me could I be there in three days
and so I grabbed my group together and we made the record.
Sam Phillips
recorded
"Ooby Dooby" for Roy, and he told him,
"Roy, go get you
a Cadillac."
Roy comes back to North Texas on Cloud 9. One of our
classmates,
Priscilla Vincent, told me that Roy
drove up to her in this white Cadillac and said,
"Priscilla, you need a ride?"
She said, "Where did you get that car?" He says
I just recorded
"Ooby Dooby" in Memphis, and we're going to open a tour
of the western United States
for the Everly Brothers.
Roy
would be, I think,
very
humbled and honored
that North Texas
would be recognizing him at this point in time.
He could not have imagined that when
he was at North Texas
