  • Hi, I’m John Lee Hancock, director ofThe Highwaymen.”

  • In this scene, Frank Hamer, as played

  • by Kevin Costner, and Maney Gault,

  • as played by Woody Harrelson, have

  • come upon the body of Wade McNabb, a convict

  • that these two guys had paroled in an effort

  • to follow him and track Bonnie and Clyde.

  • They found him at his aunt’s house shot and beaten badly

  • with a baseball bat and dead, and theyre

  • wondering how complicit they are in this.

  • This was a Friday night, and it was very late.

  • And we were all very tired from a long week of work.

  • And it’s hard when youre creating rain,

  • and it’s cold already.

  • And so in some ways, that inured to our benefit

  • because this is the low point for Frank and Maney,

  • and they are tired.

  • “I never particularly liked the weight of the deciding

  • who gets to live and who doesn’t.”

  • If the two of these men together make up one person,

  • Maney is the conscience.

  • And he wears his heart on his sleeve.

  • And ultimately, I think that the movie’s

  • kind of about the toll it takes on these men’s soul

  • to have a very terrible gift.

  • They know how this is going to end,

  • and it’s going to be violent.

  • And there will be no cheers.

  • It’s never easy.

  • It’s never pretty.

  • There’s always blood at the end of the road.

  • You know that.”

  • Kevin is very much like Hamer in some ways

  • in that, in this scene, Hamer is talking about the fame

  • that Bonnie and Clyde have accumulated

  • and how it galls him.

  • And I think in some ways, Kevin

  • himself is galled by the cult of celebrity, if you will.

  • And in today’s world, Bonnie and Clyde

  • would have many, many Instagram followers.

  • This was one of the last shots, next to last shot,

  • and I remember we were all kind of sickly.

  • And I promised Woody that he would only

  • have to walk one time to the car,

  • so we timed it out carefully so

  • that he only had to go once.

  • And we were at the end of a long day.

  • And instead of shooting this traditionally,

  • we got in the backseat, and I just kind of liked

  • to see the silhouettes and the sides of their faces

  • and for us to kind of imagine what’s on their faces.

  • “I had to come.

  • Though I don’t exactly know why.”

  • [music]
