Uh, way thought that, uh, what we were seeing was a fad.

Ah, they were a little bit ludicrous.

The long hair there.

Ah, the name's the big mama and moon doggie driving down the road in the old clunker.

You know, not washing, not working.

Ah, that was a humorous aspect of it.

Uh, at the same time, I and I know a lot of others out here were appalled by the ethics of, uh, the counterculture, the the idea that hard work wasn't necessary, that you lived on the affluence, the idea that whatever it felt good you could do if you want to have sex with many partners, that was all right.

If you wanted to smoke pot, that was OK.

If it was good for you, it was fine.

Um, it went completely against the grain of, uh, the Christian as ethics that we've grown up with that went completely against the grain of the hard work ethic that most of our young people had grown up with.

Whether on the farmer in town that if you wanted to be a success in America, you learn to work.

You were honest.

You gave an honest day's work for the pay you got.

What did?

What did this?

This, uh, this editorial that I wrote in 1967 touched on that a little bit.

It was coming into the time for our county fair, and I wrote an editorial called Let's go to the Fair.

But I started out saying, In this time of riots, protest marches and LSD trips, it is with a sense of relief and gratitude that here in Greenfield, the biggest story of the week is the opening of the Adair County Fair next Monday.

Probably there are those who will say again this year that the county fairs are a thing of the past holdover from an earlier, less complicated age.

We don't agree, and we hope we never see the time when the county fair does vanish.

We wouldn't exchange our county fair with our well scrubbed young people parading their well scrubbed livestock for a hippie parade or anything else that the modern urban society has produced.

And what was that?

Really?

Well, it was saying Ah, We like it here.

We like our kids.

We like him the way they've been.

Well scrubbed, clean, hardworking.

Ah, and, uh, I don't know.

I suppose it's Ah, it's a new image.

That's still true.

I'm still covering county fairs, and those kids are wonderful on the animals are just glistening with health, and and, uh, it still works.
