Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Everybody, welcome back to flag fan Friday. Hope you like the Nauru episode... So, as you know, this is the part that I kinda talk about the things that didn't quite make it into the video. For one, I said that Nauru was the only country without an official capital... Technically, that's half true half kind of not true. Switzerland does have a de facto capital Bern. Although it's not completely official but its de facto status So it's kind of some people say it is but it's more of like a half capital - ish thing going on But if you really want to be technical kind of yes is the Nauru only country but maybe Switzerland as well It depends on how you look at it. Second of all, I forgot to talk about religion The majority of people on Nauru are Christian about two-thirds of which are Protestant the largest denomination being the Nauru Congressional Church, and you have Catholics Assemblies of God and about 10% still practice the original indigenous Nauruan religion. [Barby hilariously slaughters the word a few times] Forgot to talk about the traditional weaving pattern, I think Kokosfasern I also forgot to mention that, out of the 12 tribes, only 10 still exist today two of them actually died out. And finally The controversial topic of the detention centers. I forgot to mention that yes, there were a lot of protests, it's a source of lots of controversy in both Australia and Nauru and the world. A lot of people thought that the conditions there were not deemed as acceptable as they could have been. People in the detention centres have also been known to protest as well; and it's just kind of like A very tricky situation to deal with there's probably a few other things that I could have talked about But if you want to say it just put it in the comments. Otherwise, we got to move on time to go to the flag. So without further ado.... [Geography Now Flag/Fan Friday theme plays] Nauru? Nauru. Crazy how it's just like the least visited country in the world... Let me know if you've been to Nauru. I mean, yeah, not many people been there. [stutters] You-you're one of the rare lucky few. But anyway, let's go on to the flag. Adopted shortly after independence, The flag is essentially a map depicting the location of the actual island the blue, of course, representing the Pacific Ocean, whereas the yellow line symbolises the Equator. The star , of course, stands for the country of Nauru being situated just below the equator The star is white to represent phosphate, the primary resource that they are known for, and the twelve points on the star symbolise the twelve historic tribes of Nauru. Now, of course, prior to this flag, they had quite a few others. Throughout history before independence They were under this weird like trusteeship between Australia and the UK both countries kind of had like authority over them I guess...? Prior to that, for one year, there under Japan, then there were a British mandate and, prior to that, it was the German Empire Yeah... Germany took a stab at this place. And prior to that there were pretty much no other national flags and they do have a coat Of arms the image depicts a traditional shield with a woven background (divided into three parts) and the top upper part is an alchemical symbol of phosphorus;and on the bottom left, a Frigate bird perched over an ocean with waves Alluding to the tradition of trained frigate bird fishing in the bottom Right, you have a branch of Calophyllum flowers native to the island. the shield is surrounded by ceremonial tribal chief gear containing ropes, feathers, shark teeth and palms. On the top, lies the 12- tribe star, just like on the flag, above it a banner reading "Naoero" , the Micronesian name for Nauru, and at the bottom ,in English , reading "God's will first" Yeah, that frigate bird training thing is really interesting. It's kinda like those fishers in South China that use the (what are those birds?), like, the cormorants. Two people groups across the world ,thousands of miles away, they have the same idea... what a world we live in! So yeah, that's the only coat of arms they had, so we don't really have to talk about anything else in the meantime You know what time it is... Geogra-Fanmail Time! Ah! [plays instrument] Still love this thing... Alright guys, so we're about to start, before we do, we need a guest star which means today's guest is gonna be... you know him, Kenneth-o-Tron. [Ken] Wait, it's from the Philippines? [Barby] From the Phillipines. [Ken] You know...I wouldn't wave that around here, I mean... look, on the bright side, Keith, Caleb and Ken, like, you know..
