  • Hey everybody welcome back to flag/fan Friday, hope you like the Luxembourg episode

  • this is the part where I usually fix up a few things that we got a little wrong in the episode or I

  • Talk about things that we didn't get to talk about the biggest one a lot of you caught on yes in the motion graphic it

  • Accidentally said that Strasbourgh was in Germany when it's in France. I should know because I've actually been there

  • I also kind of forgot to talk about how it's really kind of hard to even distinguish what a native

  • Luxembourger even is if that even exists historically they've mixed a lot between peoples of the region and even today there's Luxembourg

  • Citizens that identify with ethnicities that are not from Luxembourg like there is Bulgarian

  • Luxembourgish citizens and so on but generally speaking

  • It's probably someone with a Germanic maybe a little bit Latin based background and another thing

  • I didn't really talk too much about is why there are so many Portuguese people in Luxembourg there really isn't too much of a backstory

  • Behind it. It's mostly just they moved in to do the work. That's all simple. I guess Portugal was just the top contender anyway

  • Yes, that's enough on that let's move on to the flag so without further ado

  • Love this thing that was sent to me last week from that guy from Albuquerque. I might be hitting you up, man

  • I mean, I don't know do you guys would you guys like these if so?

  • I'll hit the guy up and maybe he can print them out

  • And we can start selling them to you guys geography now desk ornaments

  • But anyway time to talk about the flag the flag is a horizontal tricolour of red white and light blue

  • Very similar to the flag of the Netherlands, but the flag is a little longer and the blue is just lighter the colors

  • don't really have designating meanings rather are most likely derived from the national ensign which depicts a crowned red line in front of a

  • Striped blue and white backdrop. Yeah, sorry guys no symbolic interpretation this week, however

  • There is some interesting backstories behind this flag for a while

  • They were kind of thinking about

  • Reverting back to the original flag with the lion on it to kind of make the distinction between them and the Netherlands and in

  • 2006 they voted

  • But they voted to kind of like keep both though now both flags are kind of seen as equally symbolic of the nation's identity

  • However on the international stage the tricolor is used more often to make things even more confusing the luxembourg

  • Province of belgium literally uses their flag I bet Luxembourg was like dude really anyway

  • I prior to that they're under the Spanish the Austrian low country the French the Dutch World War two Nazi Germany

  • And then finally they went back to this flag anyway that brings us on to the coat of arms now

  • You really don't have to know too much about all the small details basically

  • It's the same image of the red line with the crown

  • We just talked about on a shield with a huge crown on it supported by two other bigger lines with crowns

  • Shrouded by a huge elaborate fringed mantle cloth that also has a huge crown on it specifically the grand ducal crown

  • keep in mind

  • this is actually the Royal coat of arms the regular state coat of arms just takes away the mantle now we could go into the

  • Whole historical imagery thing from the Middle Ages up to the 20th century

  • But that's gonna take too long and it's kind of boring honestly

  • It's basically you find the same red lion with the crown on it in every variant and iteration of their coat of arms throughout history

  • So you get the point, and yeah, that's about it for now you know what time it is it's time for

  • So yeah, we got quite a few things and

  • Few boxes so yeah, let's jump into it all right. You know the deal we always start off with postcards

  • Tomas sends this really cool one from France has that like cool jules verne steampunk type of aesthetic to it. Oh how appropriate
