  • Hey everybody you remember Nick. Hey guys! Yeah, he's gonna help me open fan mail at the end of this episode

  • So cool. Uh, Nick, I don't need you now though. Head out, go. All right, everybody, welcome back to the Flag/Fan Friday

  • Hope you liked the Mauritius episode. As you guys know, this is the part where

  • I kind of fix the mistakes that were in the episode or I talk about stuff that I didn't talk about

  • First of all, yes, there were some spelling mistakes and like grammar mistakes French is hard.

  • Also uh, this is not Grand Baie wrong image. Also

  • I used the wrong image of the wrong Dutch Prince that the country's named after

  • Also I said Mauritius is kind of like the Singapore of Africa, technically, maybe Seychelles actually takes that title

  • It's smaller and even richer we'll talk about that in another episode

  • Also, I want to talk more about the Chagos people

  • It is kind of like a source of controversy for both Mauritius and the UK

  • Basically, the people of the Chagos islands were slaves that were brought in during the colonial years over time

  • They kind of developed their own culture on the islands, but then after Mauritius gained independence

  • part of the deal was that the UK would take over the chocolate islands instead of Mauritius and in doing so the people of the

  • Chagos Islands were then

  • Deported to Mauritius to this theory and the Chagos people kind of want their islands back and there's a lot of dispute going on yada

  • yada

  • It's a long story and finally Mauritius is one of the only 4 countries in the world that does not have any domestic or international

  • Conflict the other ones being Botswana Chile and Uruguay and yeah, that's just about it

  • I think there's a few other things that could have been mentioned but

  • uh we don't have time

  • If you know of anything write in the comments in the meantime, we gotta get to the flag. So without further ado

  • *flag friday intro*

  • Ah, Mauritius. If you want to go raise your hand. So cool how they make so many different people groups, isn't it?

  • Anyway, to the flag. Adopted shortly after independence in 1968

  • The flag of Mauritius has four equally sized

  • horizontal stripes of red blue yellow and green. Each color has a meaning: the green stands for the agriculture of the country as well as

  • the fact that the island stays green all twelve months of the year the yellow stands for the new light of

  • Independence the blue stands for the Indian Ocean that the country is located in and the red stands for

  • According to the government website the struggle for freedom and independence

  • It technically does not stand for the blood of the country

  • It's kind of help for dispute but I got with what the website of the government says

  • yo, Ken, I

  • Don't need you this week

  • animation

  • Anyway keep in mind under the British they have three different colonial flags under the French

  • They used the Royal Standard flag and under the Dutch

  • They use the Dutch East India Company flag and also keep in mind you might find this variant flag of Mauritius that has the coat

  • Of arms on it and speaking of the coat of arms

  • The coat of arms has a bit more complexity to it

  • The image contains a shield split into four parts on the top are a limb fat or an old-style sail ship representing the European settlers

  • Next to some palm trees referring to the vegetation on the bottom a key

  • Symbolizing the strategic importance of the island next to it a white triangle and star

  • Representing the island being the star of the Indian Ocean on the sides of the shield are two sugar canes

  • Supported by the now extinct dodo bird on the left side and a sambar deer on the right side

  • Which are the two national animals at the bottom lies the model Stella Clavis?

  • Maurice in DC meaning the star and key of the Indian Ocean in Latin and yeah

  • They've pretty much kept this coat of arms since independence. So that makes my job a lot easier

  • So that means you know what time it is you're a fan now time
