MynameisChristine, and I'm a frontandWebdeveloper.
I actuallyjuststartedprogrammingsixmonthsago, and I foundmyfirstdefjobaboutthreemonths.
Sonow I'vebeen a webdeveloperforabout 3 to 4 monthsnow, and I reallyloveit.
Sothistalk, I'm justgonnagive a littlebackground, um, aboutmyselfandmyinterestincoding.
Andalsohowwhat I didtowinmyfirstjob.
Um, So I graduatedfromtheUniversityofOklahomaaboutfouryearsagowiththepoliticalsciencedegree, and I didn't reallyknowwhatexactlydiddowiththepoliticalsciencedegree.
I wasconfusedandlost, andso I decidedthat I wantedtobe a lawyerandbe a makeupartist.
Beotherdifferentthings.
I hadsomanydifferenthobbiesthat I wantedto D'ohand I contemplatedthoughtaboutitand I realizedthatthosewerethetypeofjobsthat I mightnotbeinterestedinThelongrun.
Andso I gotintocodingwhen I landedmyfirstjobinthemarketingfieldand I workedwithHTMLtemplatesandbusywigand a lotofthestuffthat I didbeforewasmainlyjust, um, coatingAh, thetablesinsidethewizardwig.
Verysimplestuff.
And I realizedthat I wantedtodomoreinlife.
I didn't wanttostayatmyoldjobbecause, youknow, I justfeellike I willplateauquickly.
So I lookedaroundfordifferenttypesofclasses.
I lookedintogetting a computersciencedegree, but I realizedthatyoudon't reallyneed a computersciencedegreetodoWebdevelopment.
And I reallylikeWebdevelopmentbecause I likeartanddesign.
So I feellikethatwillbesomething I'm goodat.
So I lookedaroundonlineforsomeclasses, and a lotoftheclasseswerereallyexpensive.
Oneclasstolearn.
JavaScriptwasabouttwograndthat I saw.
Andso I waslike, youknow, I feellike I couldfindsomethingelse, youknow, maybetrydifferentroutes, someotherclassesThatmaybecheaper.
Um, andthen I sawokay, coders, whichiswhere I metCarson.
Hewasoneofmyinstructors, okay?
Codersandhadhelpedme a lotthroughoutmyjourney, so I justsayThankyou, Carson.
Very, verymuch.
Uh, so I foundOkay, coders.
Andit's basically a sixmonthmoduleorsixmodules, sixmonthslong, bootcampclasseverySaturday.
Andyoulearnedeverything.
Aboutwhat?
Development?
StartingwithbeginningwithHTMLCSS.
Youlearnhowtouseyourcommandline.
Youlearnhowtouseyourgifthub, whereyoupushallyourfilesandintogethaveandthenalsojavascriptlibraries, whichisreally, reallyimportantifyou'relookingtobe a friendanddeveloper.
Um, so, yeah, uh, I attendedbootcampforaboutsixmonths.
In a lotofthework, I hadtocodeafterpracticecoatingeverysingledayandgetbetter.
Um, theclasseswereonlyfourhourslongeveryweek, and I knewthatyouhavetoputextraworkinto, um, youhavetoputintheextraworkoutsideofclass.
So, youknow, I studied a lot.
I readallmydocumentation.
That's probablythemostimportantthing.
Isreadingyourdocumentationstartingout.
Andthat's what I did I useonmyonlineresourceis I practiceoncodeacademy.
I'm alsoasked a lotofhelpfrompeople I joinedTeklaHomamet a lotofthegreatdevelopersinthecommunity.
Andjustgettingadvicefrompeopleorpeoplewhohaveexperienceinthistypeoccurreallyhelpedme, um, lovebeing a developerevenmoretheexcitementof, youknow, seeingpeoplecreatingsomanycoolthings.
It's yoursorrybuttcreating a lotofcoolthings.
It's justamazing.
Andand I thinkthat's whyweallwanttobedevelopersisthatwewanttocreatesomethingandbuildsomethingofourown.
Andso, um, anyways, I practice a lot, andthen I wasalsolookingfor a jobatthesametime, knowingthat I'm probablynotqualified, but I gaveit a shot.
Anyways, I justkepttrying, and, um, I attendedjobfairsandbrushupmyresume.
Um, I created a portfolio.
I created a lotofsideprojectsandpushedeverythingtomygethubtoshowthat I putin a lotofwork, evenif I knowmycodewasn't thatgreat?
I justpushedeverythingintomygethub.
Andthen, um, finallygotmyfirstDebjob.
Um, at a marketingcompanywho's willingtotakethisopportunityopportunityonme, eventhoughtheyknowthat I'm probably I'm stillreallynewandnotfullyqualified.
Um, I gotthejoband I wasreallyexcited.
Got a littlecontent, andabouttwoweeksago, I actuallyalmostlostmyjobbecause I wasn't practicingenoughoutsideofwork.
Andthat's themostimportantthingsthat I wanttotellyouguysstartingoutas a developer, ifyouhavenotmuchornopriorprogramexperience, youhavetopractice.
I wasthetypeofpersonthat I wantedtolearneverything.
Myfriendandskillsweren't eventhatgreat.
And I wantedtolearntodoPHPandsequelinallofthebackend.
And I tookinworkthat I don't evenknowwhat I wascoding.
Theygavemepishmeandsequel, and I'm justsittingheretryingtofigureitout.
When I realizedthatsometimesyouhavetosayno.
Whenyou'renotreadyforsomething, youhavetosayno.
Andso I washonesttothemandsaid, Hey, I'm I'm notreadyforthisyetand I need a practiceonmyfrontandskillsandthat's what I did.
Uh, sowhenyougetyournewjob, whenyougetyourdeveloperjob, makesureyouarefluentwithallyourlanguagesbeforejumpingintosomethingelseforme, I just I justwantedtolearneverything.
I couldn't saynobecause I wasscaredtosayno.
I wanted.
I wantedtolearneverythingandbegoodateverything.
Andsometimesyouknowit's youhavetotakeitonestepat a time.
I thought, being a developermeetings, youhavetoknow, youknow, react.
Youhavetoknowangular, eventhoughatmyjobweuseJakewearylike I wantedtolearn, reactandangular.
I wanttodoallthesethings, but I know I havetotakeitonestepat a time, andthat's theimportantthing.
Andeventhough I wasinbootcampclass, I misslikethelittlethingshereandtherebecause I wastryingThiocodeoutmyportfolio.
Butevenwhen I codedout, it's stillwasn't itwasn't good.
I did.
A lotofwhat I didwas I wouldalwaysinspectwhere I click, inspectedmyconsoleandthenjustgointherein a debug.
Butwhenyouactuallyreadyourdocumentationclearlyandthoroughly, itreallyhelpsyoutounderstandwhatyou'redoing a lotmoreso I canjustcoatitoutnowfluentlyratherthanhavingtoinspectallthetime.
So I didthatinthejustpractice a lotonlineoutsideofwork.
Um, thatwasprobablythemostusefulthingsthat I didas a developer.
When I startedout, I didn't knowthatineverydivcontainertherewell, columnsandreadingthatpartmademeunderstandthatnow, insteadofhavingtoinspectmyelementeverytime, I knowthatif I weretobuildtwocolumnsisjustautomaticallycolumnMDsixcolumnndsixandsoforth.
