Hey you -
How long did you know each other before this movie got underway? Yeah. Yes. We did. Where did you meet?
And how long have you known each other? I want to hear the whole story
Would you text each other did you hang out you? Did you don't remember how we met I do. I thought you had me
At dinner
No, yes, we did. Clearly. I it made an impression on me, but somebody else didn't care
We are dinner on New Year's Eve. We work together. Oh
My god, oh my god
Because I just felt like I was basically a glorified extra and you were Scarlett Johansson
So I was like, wow, what movie noticed your brain I know
You're not a glorified actor. We don't yeah, we did this movie called Don John that was directed by Joseph gordon-levitt, and we did
Hey you two
How long did you know each other before this movie got underway, if something as an event or process is underway
That means it is in progress
It is currently happening
Ellen is referring to the Avengers and game movie and asking if Scarlett and Bree had met before production was underway
Example the preparations for the party are already underway. Yeah. Yes. We did. Where did you meet?
And how long have you known each other? I want to hear the whole story
Did you text each other did you hang out to text is to send a text message you your phone?
Okay, so I met this girl on the train and I texted her what's up. She texted. Hey
Exclamation point to hang out with somebody is a very common phrasal verb meaning to spend some time with somebody in a particular place
without doing anything specific other than talking I
Miss hanging out with you
We still hang out not like we used to remember you and me used to be inseparable
To hang out can also be used to vaguely describe that you're spending time doing something
For example, I'm just gonna hang out at home and read
Anyway, you don't feel like being alone tonight Joey and Chandler are coming over to help me put together mine my new furniture
yes, and we're very excited about I
Think I'm just gonna hang out here tonight. It's been a long while sure okay
Hey, I hope you're enjoying the lesson so far
So every single week we help learners like you understand fast speaking natives with an alkene lost without me some the jokes and without subtitles
Saravana said that since they joined their fluency and pronunciation
Have improved. So if you want to be able to do that, too
Then I highly recommend you hit that subscribe button and the bell down below to not miss a single one of our new lessons
Where did you meet and how long have you known each other?
I want to hear the whole story from this simple common phrase you can learn quite a lot
First we see two words that English learners use incorrectly all the time
Meet and know to meet someone means that you are knowing them for the first time
You have never talked to them before if you want to refer to the first time you were introduced to your girlfriend
It would be incorrect to say for example, I knew my girlfriend at a party rather
You should say I met my girlfriend at a party if you know someone it means that you have already met them at some point
In the past to continue with the same example. I have know my girlfriend for five years
Furthermore we can use the expression get to know to refer to that you begin to know someone on a more intimate level
For example, I really got to know my girlfriend when we travelled across Europe together
We had so much time to talk and learn about each other
Scarlet and Brie might say that they met a long time ago or that they have known each other for a long time
But that they only got to know each other while working on Avengers endgame
Where did you meet and how long have we known each other?
I want to hear the whole story now if we look at the grammar of what Allen said we can clear up
Another common doubt with the difference between the simple past and the present perfect
In brief we use the simple past tense to talk about a finished action in the past
We use the present perfect tense to talk about something that happened in the past, but it's still true now
So although there are few exceptions
It would be incorrect to say meet in the present. Perfect
Because it is something that happens one time in the past
You do not continue meeting someone and in the same way
it would be incorrect to use no in the simple past because you do not stop knowing someone this is why Ellen says
Where did you meet?
And how long have you known each other
If you can remember just this one sentence it will help you avoid these extremely common mistakes
Can you think of other examples with a simple past and present perfect?
Practice your English by writing them in the comments below and seeing what your fellow learners have said. You don't remember how we met
I do
At dinner
No, yes, we did clearly. I it made an impression on me
But somebody else didn't care if somebody or something makes an impression on you. They have caused a strong
memorable effect on you, which you will later remember positively about
But happy Halloween you crazies
My class loves me I am really making an impression on those guys if you make a bad impression then someone would remember you negatively
scarlet is saying the meeting with Bri for the first time always a very nice experience and one that she certainly
Remembers, she sarcastically adds as somebody else that is Bri didn't care about it since she can't remember anything about it
Hey, would you like to be able to understand fast speaking natives like scarlet and Bri without getting lost well?

Clearly I it made an impression on me, but somebody else didn't care by the way
did you notice how she connects the words and and
Impression it made an impression on me. It made an impression on me
This is exactly how NATO's pronounce words starting with a vowel sound when they come after the article and check out these other examples
We owe Lily an apology. Yeah
I'm a little more than just a pretty blonde girl with an ass. That won't quit. I can't believe this this is incredible
I mean you just wanted a Husker
in fact
this rule of
Connected speech can be applied to most cases of a word
Finishing with an end sound that is followed by another word starting with a vowel sound for example
I
can imagine
I'm sorry, all the first-class seats are taken that couple got the last two you see if we've gone around them
Like I said, then she would've given us those tickets. Damn it
When is it
Now, let's try and repeat after Scarlett while also practicing pronouncing the word impression correctly
It made an impression on me. It made an impression on me
Clearly I it made an impression on me
But somebody else didn't care we're dinner on New Year's Eve New Year's Eve is the last day of the year in the Gregorian calendar
That is December 31st and Eve is the period or the day before a holiday or any date or event
For example in a lot of countries Christmas is mostly celebrated on December
24th which is actually Christmas Eve another example, the president went on TV to give an air view on the eve of her visit China
At dinner
No, yes, we did. Clearly. I it made an impression on me, but somebody else didn't care
We are dinner on New Year's Eve. We work together. Oh
My god, oh my god
Shame on you is an idiomatic expression used to say that someone should feel very sorry or ashamed for doing something wrong
This is helping your career, oh I thought you wanted to be an actor not the creator of crazy lawsuit game
And shame on you you should know better Joey needs to work
Come on, because I just felt like I was basically a glorified extra and you were Scarlett Johansson
so this is like wow an
Extra is a person who plays a character in a film who normally does not have a speaking role and who is usually a part
Of the scene for example in a crowd like you can see here
Brie means that she felt more like a glorified extra in that movie production
Meaning that although she had the status of being called an actress when compared to a star such as Scarlett Johansson
She thought she only had the qualities or relevance of an extra
so basically when you collocate
Glorified with a noun that indicates insignificance or relevance such as extra you are giving the idea that the person is more insignificant
Than what their position represents
Example, I don't understand why people pay so much for limousine rides. I think it's really just a glorified taxi
We did this movie called Don John that was directed by Joseph gordon-levitt, and we did
If you're an actress or actor to do a scene is to shoot and be part of a scene
I
Just want to say how wonderful I think you are you're not the Phantom is dying. Are you
I'm Joey Tribbiani. We did a scene together yesterday
Yes, it is cuz people have been waiting for a long time and it people go there's tattoos
I know that you all have given yourselves tattoos for the right. Well - mark cuz he chickened out
Yeah, that's right mark you check it out
but it's like they're kind of like a sort of like an Avengers symbol with a little kind of in a oh
There's whose is that that's Roberts. I think is that a pile of hair a butt. That's gross
What is yeah, why does it go like wait, wait - take that
Why are you so much hair on the inside of his for nuts? That's a lot of hair on the inside of the forum
Kim
Yes, it is cuz people have been waiting for a long time and people go there's tattoos
I know that you all have given yourselves tattoos
Ellen is referring to how the cast of Avengers that is the stars in the movie all went to get new tattoos
I know that you all have given yourselves tattoos for the right
well - mark has he chickened out in this case - means the same as except for
Example tell me the story again. Mine. Is that boring part in the middle? I?
Wish men could have children on their own like seahorses you want kids?
Maybe I've kind of lately been thinking about the whole wife and kids thing
Just - the wife you could always go it alone. I know that you all have given yourselves tattoos for the right
well - mark has he chickened out - chickened out is an
Informal phrasal verb that means to decide not to do something because you're too frightened or scared
Example I was going to go bungee jumping but I chickened out at the last second
When you see Lily, would you give her that note because I wanted to talk to her at the memorial
but well, I pictured her getting mad at me the way you
me and like chickened out so
I wrote her that number would you give it to her place?
So Scarlett is saying that everyone got the specific new tattoo
Except for Mark Ruffalo who according to her was afraid of doing it and decided not to I know that you all have given yourselves
Tattoos for that right? Well - mark because he chickened out here
We can hear another interesting case of linking and connected speech notice how the D and chickened appears to connect with the word out
Making it sound like doubt chickened out. Well - mark has he chickened out because he chickened out
No, let's try and repeat after Scarlett. Well - mark because he sure can
Well - mark cuz he chickened out this is actually something that happens very often with phrasal verbs in English listen to these other examples
Okay, you you make sure Monica does not find out. Okay?
I give up you guys. I don't know what I'm gonna do with this thing
Hey mom, if you're at the store later
Could you pick up some ice we bought a hibachi together and then he ran off and got married and things got pretty ugly
If you're interested in mastering connected speech you should check out the free mini course that I told you about
Linked at the top and in the description below
Yeah, that's right mark you check it out
but it's like they're kind of like a sort of like an Avengers symbol with a little kind of in a
Symbol is a sign shape or object that is used to represent something else
For example brand logos normally have symbols he or she's talking about the Avenger symbol which most of the original cast got tattooed
Whose is that? That's Roberts. I think is that a pile of hair a butt. That's gross. What is it?
No, a pile of something is a large number of things that are put one on top of another
for example a pile of stones
Gross is and adjectives that can be informally used to describe somebody or something. That looks disgusting
Or unpleasant because it makes you feel sick. I
Tasted Jen's milk and Ross freaked out
Why'd you freak out because it's breast milk
It's gross
My breast milk is gross
No, Carol, there's nothing wrong with it. I just I just don't think breast milk is for adults
In the clip they are talking about what seems to be a pile of hair on the floor seen in the photo
They're looking at like we have to take that back. Why do you get so much hair on the inside of his florets?
That's a lot of hair on the inside of the forearm
The forearm is the lower part of the arm as seen here
The inside of the forearm is the area that is normally facing down or backwards on the same side of the palm of the hand
As you can see here
Robert Downey jr
Had to shave the inside of his forearm to get the tattoo
And the hair wondering why he had so much hair on that area in
American culture tattoos are more common than ever. What do you think about tattoos? Would you ever get one like scarlet?

But then fans have tattoos of all of you that there's some crazy tattoos Oh hands have gotten
Yeah, like the entire back. I've seen some of the entire back. Yeah, there's one we'll look once
Oh, no, wait a second on a hand
Back yeah, that looks like the Bride of Chucky did
Yep, that lease is oh
Snap that's my resting fear. Yeah
That looks vignette, I know that was not bad. I mean that's beautiful what's in the middle of my forehead. Oh
Nothing yet. It's someone's mole. That's now in there
Wow, my nose looks crazy. Oh
My that's not bad. What's the weirdest thing that you've seen? That was really merchandise. Look hot in that one Wow
I mean
I feel like a new sense of pressure like as a person to like not be a giant
embarrassment to someone because that's gonna be a lot of work to cover up if yeah, I
Think it looks good. I like it
But then fans have tattoos of all of you that if there's some crazy tattoos Oh hands have gotten yeah
Like the entire back I've seen some of the entire back. Ellen is referring to a person's back
That is the large area of the human body below the head and above the legs
Were you surprised that somebody would get a tattoo of her that would take up a person's entire back?
Yeah, that looks like the Bride of Chucky
Chucky is the popular fictional character that appears in the horror film series child's play
The Bride of Chucky is another character from that film series
Scarlet is saying that that that two version of Bree seen here actually looks a lot like the Bride of Chucky
That looks like the Bride of Chucky. Oh
Snap that's my resting face
Yeah, I know
We just heard brie and Scarlet say a few slang and idiomatic expressions that looks like the Bride of Chucky did
Get out of here is used to express disbelief or surprise
It is also very common to hear it when somebody is receiving very good news. Oh
Hey, Joey, Tribbiani. I know I am a big fan of yours
I
Used to have scheduled my classes so I could watch dr. Drake ramoray on days of our lives. Oh
Snap or just snap is also an exclamation of surprise and
Sometimes use jokingly when reacting to somebody else being insulted
If you say that something is bananas you mean that it is very silly or crazy
So I showed Marshall that Lily's argument with bananas and now he'll never have to watch another dish
If a person is going bananas that can also apply it they're very excited because of pleasure anger or another
Emotions resting face is a facial expression of an individual who is relaxed resting or not expressing any particular emotion
however, she is probably referring to it being her resting bitchface which is when a person's resting face actually unintentionally looks
Like if they were angry
annoyed or irritated
Even though they are not feeling any of those
Emotions here is another great example of this from an interview with Ellen and comedian Amy Schumer. I
Learned I learned that my resting face is just a scowl. It's just
That bad, I mean that's beautiful what's in the middle of my forehead the forehead is the part of the face above the eyebrows
It's someone's mole that's now a
Mole is a small dark permanent spot or lump on a person's skin
Scarlett is saying that it's tattoo incorporated the mole, which means that the mole is now part of the tattoo
what's funny here is that the mole looks similar to a dot that was intentionally placed there and
Looking a lot like a bindi a decorative colored dot traditionally worn on the center of the forehead by some Eastern cultures
My nose looks crazy
What's the weirdest thing that you've seen that was really good
And I look hot in that one hot is an informal way to say that somebody is sexually attractive Wow
I mean
I feel like a new sense of pressure
Like as a person to like not be a giant embarrassment to someone free means that seeing all those people having tattoos of her actually
Makes her feel the responsibility not to disappoint or embarrass them for having her displayed on their body
I mean
I feel like a new sense of pressure
like as a person to like not be a giant embarrassment to someone because that's gonna be a lot of work to cover up if
yeah to cover things up would be to hide something and prevent others from seeing it or
In this case from seeing three in the tattoo
We can also use this more figuratively to talk about information or something that happened. For example a government cover-up
Hey you two
How long did you know each other before this movie got underway? Yeah. Yes. We did. Where did you meet?
And how long have you known each other? I want to hear the whole story did
You text each other. Did you hang out you did you don't remember how you
Don't remember how we met I do I thought you had me
At dinner no, yes, we did. Yeah clearly. I it made an impression on me, but somebody else didn't care we
We are dinner on New Year's Eve, we work together. Oh my god good. Oh my god
Bad
Because I just felt like I was basically a glorified extra and you were Scarlett Johansson, so I was like, wow what my
What movie noticed your brain I know what movie you're not a glorified actor
We did this movie called Don John that was directed by Joseph gordon-levitt, and we didn't leave. Oh
Man there's tattoos. I know that you all have given yourselves tattoos for the right. Well - mark cuz he chickened out
Yeah, that's right mark you chickened out but it's like they're kind of like a sort of like an Avengers symbol with a little kind
Of in a oh, there's whose is that that's Roberts. I think is that a pile of hair a butt. That's gross
What is yeah, why does it get like wait, wait - take that
Why do you have so much hair on the inside of his four months? That's a lot of hair on the inside of the forearm
Come on Burke
but but then then fans have tattoos of all of you that they've there's some crazy tattoos Oh hands have gotten
Yeah, like the entire back. I've seen some of the entire back. Yeah, there's one we'll live once
Oh, no, wait a second
On a hand and wait a sec. Oh
Yeah, that looks like the Bride of Chucky
Yep, that lease is oh
Snap that's my resting fear. Yeah
That looks vignette, I know that was not bad. I mean that's beautiful what's in the middle of my forehead
Oh them skin nothing, yeah, it's someone's mole that is now under
Wow, my nose looks crazy Oh
Mike that's not bad. What's the weirdest thing that you've seen that was really working dice. Look hot in that one Wow
I mean
I feel like a new sense of pressure
like as a person to like not be a giant embarrassment to someone because that's gonna be a lot of work to cover up if
Yeah, I think it looks good. I like it
