Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Sound ON is a new series of concerts that I get to program, which is amazing, really, really fun, and the programming is inspired by the pillars that the New York Philharmonic is using to program their season. Sound ON takes place in one of my absolute favorite places in New York City: the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center, which is at Columbus Circle, in the Time Warner building, and the hall itself — behind the stage is this massive wall of glass windows that overlooks Columbus Circle and Central Park, so you really can't ask for a more beautiful place to spend a Sunday afternoon. These concerts are absolutely great for somebody that doesn't know anything about classical music, and they're great for people who are obsessed with classical music! I also feel like if you don't know anything about classical music, or new music, contemporary music, which is featured on all these Sound ON concerts, this is absolutely the place to start, because that's music being written by people that are alive now, that are living as part of our society. Sound ON: "Going Dutch" is a concert I'm incredibly excited about. We have Louis Andriessen, one of the most influential composers of the past 50 years. Not only was he an incredible musician who created a style that I think just sort of seeped out into a lot of other people's styles; he also taught a bunch of people and was such a generous teacher. "Going Dutch" is built as a concert that showcases first off the music of Louis Andriessen and then also the music of his students, who are now successful composers in their own right.
