Good morning everyone, and welcome to Jurassic Park!

If you're wondering where I am today, I'm not in Jurassic Park, unfortunately

That would be an incredible, incredible day.

But we're actually at Fukui Station

Fukui is the place where they uncovered the most dinosaurs

Where they've excavated the most dinosaurs

And to pay tribute to that, they've nicknamed it the Kingdom of Dinosaurs

And as well as having three giant animatronic dinosaurs

out the front of the station, they've actually painted the

whole station with a very cool dinosaur-looking setting.

I must say, most train stations in Japan look the same.

It's nice to see something different. It's nice to see

A giant, animatronic dinosaur!

And speaking of animatronic dinosaurs, look!

How're you doing, Sharla? Sharla: Good.

Chris: How do you feel about dinosaurs?

Sharla: I fucking love dinosaurs. This is awesome.

Chris: So today we're cycling about 85 kilometres

It's a really long stretch from Fukui to Lake Biwa

The lake that kind of lies just north of Kyoto

It's also Sharla's last day, sadly.

later on in the trip. So it's not entirely sad. Sharla: I will be back. I will be back

Chris: Before we get going, of course, it's time to reveal

what the challenge of the day is.

We've gotta speak in Japanese? Cool.

Chris: できますよ [ I can do it ]

Uh, no problem. I can do it.

But, I do need a few coffees.

I find in the morning - which is now- I'm

crap at Japanese. It just doesn't come out my head Sharla: Yeah

Chris: So, after a few coffees and a bit of exercise

Once the cycle's underway, I should be

Chris: コーヒーを飲んだら、日本語が出てくる。 [ When I drink coffee the Japanese flows ]

Chris: It's magical. [ Like a magic ]

Sharla: これから日本語ー　ダメ「マジカル」どが [ From now on, we speak Japanese — You're not allowed to say things like "magical"! ]

Chris: マジカル [ Magical! ]

Sharla: There ya go... あっ、あっ、そうだ… Fuck!

Chris: She gave up quick, didn't she? Went straight to "Fuck."

Chris: I haven't actually spoken Japanese in a long time

Sharla: Good practice Chris: I really don't speak it as much as I should

Because a lot of my friends speak English rather well

Sharla: and that's the thing- and they always want to practise English

So you feel bad speaking Japanese with them

Chris: It's gonna be pretty tough, I think

Sharla: Interesting. Chris: But it'll be certainly be good practice

to get in the swing of things, to start looking at things around me and

thinking, "How can I speak Japanese, how can I explain that?"

For example, right now,

It's really bright. I can't see a damn thing. The word for that is

眩しい　「まぶしい」(mabushii)

It means, like, "dazzled," right, it's so bright you can't see a damn thing

Now, mabushii is an adjective, and in Japan they say adjectives

a lot, just to sum up the situation.

So rather than saying, "Oh my god I can't see!"

They'll say, "あ、眩しいね！"

Sharla: Yeah, it's really easy to describe stuff in Japanese

really, you just need to learn a lot of adjectives.

Chris: Just say one word. Sharla: That's basically it.

Chris: For example, this coffee. This coffee is 美味しい(oishii)

delicious.

美味しいね！ Sharla: 美味しい！

Sharla: 熱い [ It's hot ]

Chris: 熱い [ Hot? ] Sharla: 熱い [ Yeah, hot. ]

Chris: doing subtitles makes me lose the will to live

And that's actually a good example of a sentence that doesn't really translate well into Japanese

Chris: How are you?

Sharla: How a-

Sharla: 日本語！[ In Japanese ] Chris: 元気？ [ How are you? ]

Sharla: [ I'm feeling good but these plants hitting me in the face hurt. ] [Chris: Oh my god]

Chris: Yeah, we did it! Finished! No more Japanese today

We did the challenge, oh my god.

It takes a lot of energy to speak Japanese for a day Sharla: It does.

Chris: When you don't speak Japanese much in general

And combine that with a never-ending cycle through a

I can't say I'm enthusiastic about you returning for

this trip later on, but you may have killed your chances.
