  • At the end of this video.

  • In my line of work, I get a lot of people, clients, potential clients, just professionals in general who come up to me and tell me Linda English isn't my first language, and that's why I'm not doing well in interviews.

  • And to that, I say, Just because English isn't your first language does not automatically mean that that's why you're not doing well in interviews as someone who was born and raised in Canada to immigrant parents and living in a society here in Canada that it's super multicultural, with people from different nationalities, different backgrounds, different countries.

  • I have always been very used to interacting and working with individuals who don't have English as their first language.

  • And if you are also an ambitious and bright individual who happens to not have English as your first language, don't feel embarrassed about it.

  • There are other reasons that actually might be resulting in your poor performance and interviews that you may not be aware of.

  • And so that's what I'm going to discuss with you right now.

  • Reason Number one.

  • Why you're potentially doing poorly in interviews is that you don't understand what the employer is really asking or looking for.

  • This could potentially be the main reason why you're doing poorly in interviews.

  • It's not that you can't talk and given answer.

  • It's that you don't know exactly what kind of answer to give, and that has nothing to do with your language skills.

  • So what you need to be working on is understanding all the different types of interview questions that could come up and understand why they're asking that specific question.

  • Once you can understand why the employers air asking those questions, you'll be able to give relevant responses to them.

  • And if you struggle with this than stay tuned, because in the next little while I will be offering top notch interview, which is myself study course, that will help you to improve your interview skills and land your next job offer.

  • If you are curious and want to sign up for that, the link is down below reason Number two you're doing poorly in interviews is that you're not telling a compelling story when interviewers ask you the tell me about a time question.

  • They're looking for you to be able to tell a compelling, engaging little story with clear examples of how you demonstrated a certain skill or quality and what you can do for them.

  • If you're not structuring your answers properly, the interviewer will be less interested in your story, so make sure that you describe the situation, action and results for every story.

  • Reason number three that you're doing poorly in interviews is that your response isn't delivered in a professional way.

  • Business communication does actually exist.

  • It's different from the way you would talk to a close friend or family member.

  • If you struggle to speak professionally, it's probably because your speaking style is one where you're too blunt and you're too direct and you don't know how to round your answers in a way that they sound professional and land nicely to the other side.

  • This is where I recommend having a friend who is fluent in English or hiring a coach who is fluent in the language and can really analyze the way that you communicate and give you clear pointers on what you need to change in the way that you articulate your responses and communicate that your words essentially you're going to be saying the same thing that you wanted to say, But you're gonna be able to say it in a more professional way.

  • Have them listen to you and give you riel raw feedback on what you need to change and implement those changes so that you can have more compelling professional stories in your interviews.

  • Reason number four.

  • Your answers are either too long or too short.

  • Do you find that in interviews you tend to ramble on and on.

  • You give way too many details.

  • You find that you over explain yourself, Or are you just getting straight to the point and almost giving Onley a few word responses to the interviewers, leaving them a little bit confused and unsure if you've fully described your response, The key to interviewing well is to be able to give the right amount of information to the employer not too long, not too short so that it holds their interest.

  • So moving forward when prepare for interviews, you want to consciously monitor the length of your responses and hear how they sound out loud, which actually then leads me to my last point.

  • Reason Number five.

  • Why you're doing poorly in interviews and that is you're not practicing your answers properly.

  • You need to whip out a mere and practice your answers out loud.

  • You need to hear yourself.

  • You need to record yourself and listen back to how you sound, the more critical that you can be.

  • Not in a critical, insulting way, but just critically think and listen to your responses.

  • The more that you can identify errors and ways to improve, the better your responses will be.

  • When you go into the actual interviews, you'll sound much more natural.

  • You'll sound much more prepared and you'll be able to get to the point in a clear and direct way.

  • So as you can see, it really doesn't have to do with English.

  • Necessarily.

  • That's your issue.

  • But really the five reasons that I just described that's causing you to do poorly in interviews and how to fix them.
