- Hey, Vanity Fair, this is Troye Sivan
and this is everything I do in a day, home edition.
Just imagine that there is a alarm clock here,
somebody can edit that in [static]
in post, I'm sure.
[upbeat piano music]
[ting] I like to wake up
at like, 7:30. [typing]
I think that's the ideal wake up time.
Normally, I live in L.A.
At the moment,
I am isolating at my parents' house in Melbourn.
I use my phone alarm to wake myself up every morning.
I just use the classic sound.
The [mimicking phone alarm] one.
If I hear that sound, though, like,
if somebody's set an alarm throughout the day
and I hear that sound just like,
at a random time throughout the day,
it is extraordinarily triggering for me.
I snooze for probably, like, [snoring]
maybe 10 minutes, 15 minutes. [clock ticking]
You feel like you got a little, like, lie in,
you feel a little cheeky,
but you're still like, ready to start your day.
First thing I do is check my phone.
I tried the whole like, no phone
for the first hour of the day thing,
[vault locking]
I just haven't kept up with it and I wish that I did.
You know what?
Tomorrow, I'm not gonna check my phone first thing.
That's just inspired me.
If I know that I have something in the morning,
I will shower the night before,
[shower running]
so that my hair has time to air dry
because I can't use a blow dryer on my hair.
Sometimes, I shower in the morning
[shower running]
or maybe, I'll just, like, shower my body
and not wet my hair.
[typing]
My shower routine is all natural
[water falling] all good-smelling shit.
Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap,
fancy seaweed shampoo and conditoner from Whole Foods.
I use a loofah, if anyone was wondering.
After I step out of the shower,
if I've wet my hair,
I'll put in this, like, rake gel, I guess,
it's kind of, like a mousse
and then, I start doin' my face stuff,
which, is just like, Cetaphil moisturizer, rose hemp oil,
cologne, whatever I'm feelin' that day,
sometimes, it's the Glossier scent
and sometimes, it's this smell of this hotel
that I stayed at once.
I really like the smell of the hotel.
I asked them what it was and they were like,
"Oh, we sell it in like, a cologne."
[spritzing]
I shaved every day, [razor shaving]
until we started quarantining and isolating
and now I'm like, "Who the hell am I shaving for?"
Like, "Why do I do this to myself?"
I shaved this morning,
'cause I knew I was doing this for you guys.
I fill in my eyebrows,
just cause I feel like this first half is really dark
and then, this second half is not.
Deodorant, I've been using this
natural deodorant from MALIN + GOETZ,
it smells like eucalyptus.
Eucalyptus reminds me of Australia,
so, even when I'm away,
I'll just, like, huff my deodorant for a second
and get a little homesick,
it's really nice. [low drone tone]
I really brush my teeth, [tooth brush swooshing]
like, I go in my teeth. [claps]
I'm not trying to brag,
but I went to the dentist
and he said that I have very clean teeth.
My glam routine has gone completely out the window, though,
during quarantine, I either do absolutely nothing,
except brush my teeth [tooth brush swooshing]
or, if I'm bored
and I wanna do everything, [typing]
I do, like, the most that I've ever done.
You know what I mean?
Like, I'm talking, concealer, [clap] Cloud Paint, [clap]
rose hemp oil, all of it. [clock ticking]
I walk into my closet [clap]
and I like asking myself,
"Who do I feel like today?" [slot machine thudding]
You know what I mean?
Somedays, it's like, a black skinny jean
with a, like, really cool cowboy boot.
Let me quickly show you.
Like, somedays I wanna wear this
and maybe, like, a little button up shirt.
[slot machine thudding] Somedays, I feel like wearing
something really loud [chiming]
and brightly colored
[slot machine thudding]
and somedays, I look kind of
like a fuckboy a little bit, [ting]
like, I wanna wear a beanie
and just, like, gross jeans and my converse.
When I was younger,
I was so scared that people would think that I was gay,
that I used to purposefully try not putting effort
into what I wore
[thud] and so, now I do,
I really enjoy taking my time in the morning
to get dressed and like, try things and have fun and like,
allow myself to express myself through clothing
or accessories or whatever.
It was like a very liberating thing
when I first started to do that
and now, I really enjoy it every morning.
[typing]
A big part of my morning routine,
like, a huge part is coffee.
It's like...
my dog, [ding]
my Breville coffee machine [ting]
and then, like, my family, [ting]
after the coffee machine, [chuckles] no, I'm kidding.
[typing] Most of the time,
I'll wait till, like 11:30
and then, have kind of like, a big brunch
and now that I'm in isolation at my mom's house,
like, I'm the luckiest kid in the world,
she's making me every single meal.
This morning was this South African food, called Chakalaka,
it's like, kind of like a spicy thing
and you'd have, like, [pan sizzling]
eggs with it and stuff and it's amazing.
After breakfast, it is probably, yeah, like,
[clock ticking] almost noon I wanna say.
I might have a second coffee for the day,
this time, it's iced.
If I'm on tour, [bus tires treading]
the time I wake up on a tour bus
or I'm in a hotel and I'll go and site see
for a few hours and then I've got soundcheck,
like, that's my tour day. [clock ticking]
Normally, in L.A., [typing]
I go to the gym.
That's like a new development.
I don't trust myself with free weights,
[exercise machine creaking]
so, I'll just like, go to the various machines
[exercise machine creaking] and pull on the things
that look like they need to be pulled on.
While I'm in isolation,
I've just been doing, like, various push-ups,
incline push-up, decline push-up,
sometimes, I [clap] throw a clap in there,
if I'm feelin' like, crazy.
Sit ups...
Oh, and then, such a rookie mistake,
I know that lots of people do this
but I never do leg day,
like, who cares, right?
But, I am actually growing on my top half
and not on my bottom half,
so, the other day I did squats.
I have a car in L.A.
that I am obsessed with.
It's an electric car
[charging socket pops open]
and I've made a promise to myself
that I'm gonna try my best
[clicking] to never own a gas car.
[cars revving]
So, I really enjoy driving around L.A.,
also, you have to drive in L.A.
I think while you're driving,
it's the perfect time to make phone calls.
If I'm in L.A., I'll call my manager or whatever
and say, "Hi, do you have any work for me?"
"Do we have a job to do or anything?"
Normally, I go into the studio at like, one.
[typing] The goal is to...
[pencil scratching] is to write a song.
It'll be me and the producer and one of my co-writers,
who, often times, is like, one of my best friends.
We'll talk about life and what we had for dinner
and whatever for like, the first hour
and relationships and stuff like that
and really dig in.
And then, you just kind of sit there
and hope that something magical happens, you know, maybe,
the producer will start [soft piano music]
playing something on the keys
and you start muttering under your breath,
nonsensical words, you record it quickly into your phone
and hopefully, something amazing comes out of it.
Normally, I'm eating lunch [typing]
at like, honestly 2:30, maybe some,
like, salmon with veggies and, like a mashed potato
and I get that same meal from multiple restaurants,
just so I don't feel like I'm eating
the exact same thing every day,
even though I am.
Or, like, a really good salad or something like that.
Lately, I've been eating...
My mom makes this awesome, like, veggie wrap,
it's just, like, a wrap with like,
little, kinda falafel balls
and like, hummus and a bunch of different veggies
and stuff like that and it's really, really good.
[clock ticking] immediately after lunch,
I will continue working.
So, a lot of the time,
it's just like, work on my laptop
[typing] or, it could be everything
from like, playing around on Photoshop,
playing with different fonts,
like, to see what the aesthetic
of my next thing is gonna be
or, it could be like,
responding to a lot of like, business emails.
[typing] or taking, kind of, a meeting.
I really enjoy doing meetings at my house,
that makes me feel very, like, bougy
and I really enjoy, like, putting on a bit of a show,
I'll, you know, light the candles and stuff like that
and do the whole bit.
In Australia, while I'm here in isolation,
[typing] My work is just like,
on my laptop, all of it.
Me, like, on a Zoom meeting with someone,
doing some sort of promo or press or something like that,
or like, right now,
[typing] I'm editing a live performance
of my song "Take Yourself Home".
We had my band film themselves playing their little bits
and I'm currently, like, editing it together,
so that's what I was doing right before this.
I really like listening to music that I've made in the car,
like at sunset time.
I think that it gives you great perspective,
so, you know, I'll like, drive along Mulholland
or something, if I'm in L.A.
I mean, this sounds so lame,
but, like, put on my own music
and roll down the windows and try and like,
"How does this make me feel?"
"How does this sound in the real world?"
[door creaking] Normally, I like to come home,
like, around 7:30, eight, [clock ticking]
if I'm not already home
and kinda start to take a chill pill.
[typing] I think a big thing in, like,
Australian culture in general is...
work to live, not live to work
and so, I actually take it pretty seriously
that I like to switch off after a certain time
and try not just be working all the time.
I really like to kind of, like, clock out,
[time clock machine thudding] and either go to a dinner
or just like, make dinner at home.
I quite enjoy going alone.
I used to feel like, sorry for myself,
when I would do it, but now, I quite enjoy it
and I actually try and like,
not really be on my phone [vault closing]
as well because, once you kinda get over the fact
that you probably look a little bit sad,
it's really, really fun
and also, you can eavesdrop on people's conversations.
[people chattering] So, highly recommend that,
but, I don't always eat alone,
often times, I'll go with friends
and I really like having a drink with my meal
that always feels like a nice treat at the end of the day.
On a weeknight, normally, I'd head home at like,
[clock ticking] 10, 10:30 p.m.
If, it's a Saturday night in L.A.,
there's like, this country line dancing bar
that I really like, that I'll go to.
I really, really like going to gay bars in general.
Divey gay bars for the most part.
If it's a Saturday night,
We get home anywhere from [clock ticking]
1 a.m. to, I wanna say 4 a.m., maybe.
[typing] Once I'm home,
I'll probably shower, wet my hair,
[shower running] do my little curl cream,
so that it can curl up while I'm asleep,
just use the same moisturizer that I use in the morning.
It's the Cetaphil body lotion
[tooth brush whooshing]
and then, brush my teeth again,
get into bed in just like undies and a t-shirt.
I don't have pajamas,
it just feels so... [explosion]
glamorous to me, I don't know why,
it feels like something that's like, from the movies.
Maybe, if somebody that I know in real life is watching this
and you wanna get me a birthday present this year,
get me pajamas, 'cause like,
I don't think I can justify buying them for myself,
but if somebody else bought them for me, hell yeah,
I would wear them.
Getting to bed,
I have recently treated myself [typing]
to a projector in my room.
I'll put on a movie or a TV show or a YouTube video
with the intention of falling asleep.
I'll maybe watch, like, five minutes
[clock ticking] and then roll over
and fall asleep, just to the white noise
and I start it all over again the next day.
All right, Vanity Fair,
thank you so much for having me.
I hope you learnt a thing or two about me.
Stay safe, stay home if you still have to.
Love you lots, see you soon.
