  • What's up, guys? I'm Ethan your RealLife English fluency coach and is

  • there anything really more fun to do on the weekends then to curl up on the sofa

  • with a bowl of popcorn and watch a great movie?

  • Well, based on the popularity of our lesson

  • looking at ten of the best series to learn English with in 2020.

  • I want to make you a list of my favorite movies that I've seen over the last year

  • that will be great for you to learn English with.

  • Now these are not just

  • movies that came out over the last year rather they're all ones that I've seen

  • recently and that I think are great for learning the language.

  • Now I've tried not to pick any ones that are too obvious

  • like Oscar winners or the blockbuster

  • films because I'm pretty sure a lot of you will have already seen these.

  • And I also wanted to avoid films that are too classic or artsy because these can be

  • sometimes kind of slow or boring and usually don't have the language that you

  • actually need to learn now that said all the series that I have chosen come from

  • different genres which means that no matter what kind of movies you like you

  • are bound to find something that you like in this list and that also makes it

  • great for learning all different types of vocabulary.

  • Plus, you can find most of these series

  • on Netflix which makes it super easy, convenient and simple to watch them.

  • By the way before we get into the lesson I want to let you know that

  • if you're new here every week would make fun lessons like this one so that you

  • can go beyond the classroom and live your English like Ghaida who says that she

  • is no longer afraid when she hears natives speak English.

  • If you want to get fluent, confident English too

  • it's really simple just hit that subscribe button

  • and the bell down below so you don't miss any of our new lessons.

  • Now let's get into the best ten movies to learn English with this year.

  • Number ten: Newness.

  • -Hey how's it going? -Good.

  • Yeah?

  • -You're from Spain originally? -Yeah, Barcelona.

  • Oh my God!

  • You walked like that the whole way here?

  • Okay let's go

  • -You want to have kids? -Yeah, I wanna have kids

  • -but I don't want to get married. -No? I did.

  • -You were married? -Briefly, yeah. What about you?

  • What about me what?

  • You know have you ever ever been in love?

  • Now this is a super fascinating

  • film that deals with exactly how complicated modern-day romantic

  • relationships can be. It features main actress Laia Costa who

  • is actually from Barcelona which means that she is a non-native English speaker

  • just like you, which I think makes this film highly relatable.

  • Furthermore we see a cameo from leading a relationship psychotherapist Esther Perel who on a

  • side note has some really fascinating TED Talks and podcasts that I highly

  • recommend that you check out.

  • Well it goes without saying that Newness is a

  • really great way for you to learn about vocabulary and even culture related to

  • dating in the United States.

  • Finally I'll give you a warning that if you have very

  • traditional values this movie might not be the best one for you but this might

  • also be the exactly reason why you need to watch it.

  • Number 9: The King.

  • A king that's no friends, only followers.

  • And foe.

  • Now this is a Netflix original

  • movie about King Henry the fifth of England who lived during the 15th century.

  • Now this one is fantastic because not only will you improve your

  • English but you'll also learn about British history and there are actually

  • some things that I didn't know about like for example that Kings used to

  • fight on the battlefield in wars and that France for a short period of time

  • formed a part of the British Kingdom so if you like movies about history or

  • about war and strategy this one is perfect for you.

  • Number 8: Ocean's Eleven.

  • Vegas, huh?

  • Vegas?

  • Vegas.

  • Fantastic!

  • The heist is impossible.

  • Casino security cannot be beaten out of your minds

  • Exactly.

  • Now I actually watched this one along with two sequels for the first

  • time this last year and it has a stellar cast: Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Brad Pitt

  • just to name a few.

  • Now all these movies are heist movies do you know what that means?

  • A heist is basically a well planned out robbery so watching this

  • you'll be on the edge of your seat that means you'll be in suspense wondering

  • "What's going to happen? how will they possibly pull off this plan?"

  • You can check out all three of them on Netflix.

  • By the way, do you want to understand

  • your favorite movies even without the subtitles?

  • Well we have a really fun and

  • effective way for you to do it with our Fluent with Friends course now in this

  • forty-eight week course you will have fun learning how natives really speak

  • alongside the first two seasons of the TV series Friends with PDF power lessons

  • vocabulary memorization software, access to our Fluency Circle global community

  • and so much more.

  • What are you waiting for?

  • You can try it for free right now

  • with our three-part master class all you have to do is click up here or down

  • description below to learn more and sign up

  • we're looking forward to seeing you inside.

  • Number seven: My Neighbor Totoro.

  • -Bye Mei! -Bye Mei.

  • -Hurry up Mei, it's gonna rain. -Okay.

  • Are you off to meet your dad at the bus stop?

  • Yes he forgot his umbrella.

  • Now changing genres completely I wanted to include at least one animated film in

  • this list now I don't have kids yet and so I do not watch animated films as much

  • as I used to but when I do sometimes my favorite is a great anime like this one

  • these are great for learning languages because so often they have high quality

  • dubs available in a variety of languages. In fact I actually watch this in Spanish

  • My Neighbor Totoro is an adorable film but as is the case with many anime it

  • actually covers really deep tough real-life problems like having a loved

  • one in the hospital but if you want something that will put a smile on your

  • face while you relax and learn English then this is a great choice and if

  • you've already seen it or if you enjoyed this one then you might also want to

  • check out Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away.

  • Number 6: Knocked Up.

  • I'm really just trying to get to know each other and give this a real shot

  • Okay I know we didn't plan this but I'm on board.

  • Yeah...

  • Is it freaking you out that we're shopping for baby clothes?

  • No I'm just pretending I'm shopping

  • for regular clothes and I'm a giant.

  • What do you think of him, he is funny, right?

  • Fetch, alright bring it back.

  • He is playing fetch with my kids.

  • -Go get it, fetch. -He is treating my kids like they're dogs.

  • Now, I love a good comedy and the main actor in this one Seth Rogen has many hilarious films.

  • Now this one is actually a rom-com and you know what a rom-com is

  • a rom-com is a romantic comedy and this one is actually kind of different than

  • your typical romantic comedy.

  • Now with Knocked Up you will learn vocabulary

  • related to pregnancy, to romantic relationships and you'll learn a ton of

  • great slang as well now if you're looking for something a little bit

  • lighter than a lot of the other options on this list well then this one is a perfect choice.

  • Number 5: Knives Out.

  • Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to request that you all stay until the

  • investigation is completed.

  • What? Can we ask why?

  • has something changed?

  • -No. -No it hasn't changed or no we can't ask?

  • Now this one is a murder mystery and I love a great movie that can keep you in suspense and

  • one of the great things about knives out is that it also will have you laughing

  • because they did a fantastic job mixing in some comedy with all the suspense

  • very similar to how they do in Ocean's Eleven.

  • You know something, spill it.

  • I suspect foul play.

  • I have eliminated no suspects.

  • Number four: Kill Bill.

  • Not too long ago I was quite a professional.

  • My friends and I, we were the creme de la creme in an exclusive industry.

  • And we all worked for this man, Bill.

  • Then one day I decided to leave, settle down, start a new life.

  • But when I tried to get out

  • they did me in.

  • Now this is one that I've seen dozens of times and it never gets

  • old it is a Quentin Tarantino classic and it features a mix of Japanese

  • samurai and American Western type films.

  • We actually recently made a lesson with

  • Kill Bill which you can check out by clicking up here or down description

  • below and if you like Kill Bill then another movie you will probably

  • love is Fight Club which we've also made a lesson with which I will post in the description.

  • Number three: The Matrix.

  • Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real?

  • What if you were unable to wake from that dream?

  • How would you know the difference between the

  • dream world and the real world?

  • What is happening to me?

  • The answer is out there, Neo, it's the question that drives us.

  • What is the Matrix?

  • Now I just recently rewatched all three of the

  • Matrix films this is a sci-fi which is a science fiction that deals with a

  • dystopian future it also covers some really deep philosophical subjects and

  • one of the things that I find really great about this is that every time I

  • watch The Matrix I find new things that I hadn't discovered before

  • The Matrix really has everything incredible action and important subject

  • matter and incredible special effects even though it's 20 years old.

  • So if you haven't seen The Matrix I highly recommend that you watch it right away

  • and if you have seen it and you're looking for something else similar I

  • highly recommend the Netflix original movie I am mother now I am mother very

  • similar to the matrix deals with a dystopian future and it will keep you on

  • the edge your seat guessing what is going to happen so I highly think it is

  • worth watching and finally if you have seen and loved The Matrix I highly

  • recommend that you check out this series Sense8 which is another Netflix original

  • which was created by these same creators of The Matrix.

  • Number 2: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

  • It's a beautiful day in this

  • neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, would you be mine?

  • Could you be mine?

  • Please would you be my neighbor?

  • Now I grew up watching Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and this was a children's

  • show that was different than others because Mr. Rogers actually treated kids

  • like intelligent people that deserved quality programming just like that of adults.

  • A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is about what Mr. Rogers

  • was like in real life.

  • That little bit that he put into each of us that little

  • lesson that little sense of propriety or neighborliness that he put into us

  • that's the thing that I think is kind of immeasurable.

  • Is it alive in the land given how polarized we are?

  • So I made this film I want to know I think let's

  • have a discussion what kind of neighbors are we are we living up to what Fred

  • Rogers wanted us to do?

  • Now I actually thought that Tom Hanks should have won

  • best actor for this movie because he had a stellar performance in this film now

  • it's very rare for me to cry during a movie but A Beautiful Day in the

  • Neighborhood sure had me close.

  • It's a tear-jerker which if you don't know what

  • that is it's a movie that might make you cry but that has a really satisfying and

  • heartfelt ending.

  • Now one of the things that I really love about this one is

  • that there are a lot of lessons that we can learn about kindness which for a

  • goal citizen like yourself is a really important value that I think that the

  • world needs more than ever today.

  • Number one: The Dark Knight.

  • Here's my card.

  • Bruce this is Harvey Dent.

  • Rachel's told me everything about you.

  • Well I certainly hope not.

  • You once told me that we'd be together, did you mean it?

  • Bruce don't make me your only hope for a normal life.

  • -You're Alfred, right? -That's right, sir.

  • Any psychotic ex-boyfriends i should be aware of?

  • Oh you have no idea.

  • Now I actually rewached this one last year and I had forgotten how incredible it was it

  • really was revolutionary as far as superhero movies go, it broke the mold

  • which means that it kind of takes something that's normal and it does it

  • in a completely different way.

  • In The Dark Knight we see some really

  • mind-blowing performances from all the actors especially Heath Ledger who made

  • a really unforgettable Joker.

  • -You complete me. -You're a garbage, you kill for money.

  • Don't talk like one of them you're not, even if you'd like to be.

  • So, if you haven't seen The Dark Knight then a great place to start is the lesson

  • that we made with this movie and if you have seen it then why not go rewatch it

  • maybe it was surprising again just as much as it did for me.

  • All right I hope you've had a lot of fun, we have barely scratched the surface.

  • There are so many fantastic movies out there that you can learn English with so

  • I want to know which ones did we miss? What was your favorite movie that you
