Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles hi everyone Jennifer from Tarle speech with your pronunciation question today's question is how do I pronounce the word older meaning that you've lived longer and order an arrangement I like to think of an order as food because I often order food for take-out so let's take a look at both of these words let's start with the endings since they're exactly the same so for these words two syllables each two beats in each word and we are going to end each word with der so to say this syllable start by touching the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth your voice box is on and moving and vibrating for this sound and then you're going to move to the er for this sound be sure that you make this longer and stronger than you typically would that's the biggest mistake that I hear is that people make this too short also make sure that you make this sound tense enough that's the second mistake that I hear is people let their lips just relax and then it doesn't sound like an er it sounds like an uh so to make this sound the tip of your tongue can point down into the bottom of your mouth or flip back just do not touch your teeth do not touch your teeth or move the tip of that tongue it's static in English er ooo der sorry I was gonna say the whole word der der okay so we've got the ending of the word now let's move on to ol der older and to say this part of the word think of saying ole and to do that you're going to open your mouth and then close it for that L ol-ol-ol der you can see once you touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth for that L then you can pull it down for the der let's try that one more time older older older older now for order you can see I'm really exaggerating my lip shape here because for the or you're really going to pucker your lips like you're gonna blow a kiss to someone so or der so again for the or we're gonna have an er in there we've already talked about that so again focus on the lips here pucker and then pull back to that tense square for the er order order order order okay let's contrast both of those older order older order older order older order now that I'm older I order much more takeout as I prefer to eat at home give it a try I know people are going to notice the difference if you found this helpful please give us a like and a share don't forget to subscribe and if you would like more practice please check out our books on google play itunes and at tarle speech thanks so much everyone i'll see you again soon
