  • Our first guest is a Golden Globe-winning actress,

  • entrepreneur, and quarantined mother of three.

  • Please welcome Kate Hudson.

  • Hi!

  • Yay!

  • It's so nice to see your face.

  • (QUIETLY) Say hi!

  • Who do you have on your lap there?

  • This is Rani.

  • Can you say, hi Ellen?

  • Good.

  • Hi!

  • Andy is in the yard.

  • He says hi.

  • Hi, Andy!

  • Hi.

  • I can't see because of the panes,

  • but I'm sure your baby is gorgeous.

  • Yeah, she is.

  • Yeah, no, he's not allowed in because

  • of the social distancing.

  • So he just stays in the yard.

  • [LAUGHTER]

  • So I know you're going to make a big announcement later on.

  • But first of all, let's talk about how you are.

  • What's happening with you in that house?

  • A lot of kids and a lot of school.

  • I'm just trying to--

  • school, OK.

  • I'm just trying to balance school and work, basically.

  • But it's definitely-- the schooling thing

  • is an adjustment.

  • Two kids-- Ryder's 16, he's in 10th grade.

  • He's a little more independent.

  • But Bing is eight and in second grade, so it's hands-on.

  • And then, yeah, it's just a juggling act--

  • an adjustment and a juggling act.

  • But it's good.

  • I'm grateful for our health.

  • Are they all together and you just go from one person

  • to the other?

  • Or, do you go into the rooms?

  • Or, do they all learn at the same time-- obviously,

  • different things-- but how does that work?

  • [EXHALES]

  • Well, Ellen, [LAUGHS] funny you ask.

  • No, you know what it is?

  • I have one area for Bing because it's more hands-on.

  • I have to sit with him.

  • So he's got his area.

  • And then Ryder does his work in his area and we do more, like,

  • check-ins because he doesn't get--

  • he's doing lectures and it's Zoom,

  • but he doesn't have that one-on-one.

  • So we kind of just started going back and forth on,

  • like, say he has to read an article.

  • We'll read it together.

  • We'll talk about it.

  • But I'm definitely doing more reading

  • than I've ever done in my life.

  • And then, I try to just squeeze in calls and the Zoom work life

  • that I have to do.

  • And I've got four businesses and so it's just--

  • Andy.

  • So great.

  • I like that.

  • I want some Andys just for the fun of it.

  • [LAUGHS]

  • No, you really don't.

  • You don't He usually is in the studio with us,

  • as you know, dropping things and making a lot of noise.

  • And now, he's just outside.

  • But he still chimes in every once and a while.

  • Do you have a question for Kate, Andy?

  • No.

  • I'm just very much relating to the idea of having kids

  • at home all the time and how there's

  • so much juggling going on now.

  • I don't relate to the part of having four businesses I'm just

  • here in the yard.

  • And is your mom good?

  • My mom's great, yeah.

  • Mom's great.

  • But we're being really careful.

  • We're doing what we're supposed to be doing.

  • We're staying-- we're keeping our distance.

  • And I'm such a tactile person.

  • I think that's one of the hardest things is just not

  • being able to hold--

  • It's very strange because people are having these Zoom,

  • you know, happy hours and it's still

  • just really strange to even--

  • You know her mom's Goldie Hawn, right?

  • Yes, Andy.

  • All right.

  • Oh my God.

  • [LAUGHTER]

  • It's funny, I was thinking about that-- the Zoom

  • cocktail hours-- and I just don't know

  • what that is like with kids.

  • I was thinking about--

  • I was hearing people talk about like, oh,

  • what a time to reflect, and go inside, and look at your life.

  • There is no reflecting.

  • I don't know what that is.

  • Because any moment I've had to sit down,

  • whether it's not trying to go with the kids,

  • and me at, you know, whatever-- from scrubbing the toilet that

  • hasn't been scrubbed in a week and realizing oh, God--

  • I'm waiting for the moment of reflection.

  • So we'll see if--

  • actually, my hope is that we get to move forward out of this

  • before I get time to reflect because that

  • would be a nice day.

  • I think you just came upon your moment of reflection.

  • I don't know the last time you cleaned a toilet,

  • but that would be the time to reflect on the fact

  • that you're cleaning your toilet, right?

  • Well, you'd be surprised.

  • You know, I'm a really roll up my sleeves kind of girl,

  • oh yeah.

  • [LAUGHS]

  • Oh.

  • Well, I like to clean also.

  • Toilets are not my favorite thing.

  • So let me ask you this though, because I

  • heard that you have been ready for anything that

  • happens for a long, long time.

  • It seems like you have been stocking up on--

  • what have you stocked up on?

  • What are you, a prepper?

  • I'm a bit of pepper.

  • I have been for a long time.

  • I know it sounds--

  • you know, people think preppers are crazy.

  • I don't.

  • I think it's actually kind of--

  • I think it's very practical.

  • And I think when you grow up on a ranch

  • that you kind of have a-- you have

  • a little bit of that in you.

  • We have a very self-sustaining ranch,

  • and that's where we grew up.

  • We had our garden and we had-- my mom

  • and I've actually pickled.

  • Kurt is very much about creating your own sustainable

  • environment.

  • And so growing up, I was-- we live in an earthquake--

  • a huge natural disaster zone.

  • So I've always been prepared for, like, a month of disaster.

  • Doomsday preppers are really having their I-told-you-so

  • moment right now, aren't they?

  • Well, not really--

  • Like, this is everything they've planned for.

  • I think this is a little bit different.

  • Pandemic is a little different because, for instance, we

  • ride dirt bikes.

  • So we have dirt bikes.

  • That's also a very kind of if you have to get out--

  • I'm getting a dirt bike.

  • That's for sure.

  • Yeah, I want a dirt bike just because it sounds fun

  • to say I have a dirt bike.

  • Just backing up, you said that you and your mother

  • were pickled, or you pickled?

  • What did you say?

  • Well, [LAUGHS] we pickled.

  • All right.

  • Well, I want to talk more about everything.

  • But I want to take a break.

  • Take a break.

  • That's what I just said, Andy.

  • Don't act like you're in control all of a sudden.

  • Come on.

  • Katie knows.

  • Katie?

  • Yeah.

  • We've worked together, so she said I could call her Katie.

  • [LAUGHTER]

  • All right, we're going to take a break.

  • Break!

  • And we're going to talk to Kate and Katie after this.

  • Hi, I'm Andy.

  • Ellen asked me to remind you to subscribe to her channel

  • so you can see more awesome videos,

  • like videos of me getting scared or saying embarrassing things

  • like ball peen hammer.

  • And also some videos of Ellen and other celebrities,

  • if you're into that sort of thing.

  • [SCREAMS]

  • God [BLEEP]!
