  • Hi, everyone, I am Fallon, and today we are going to master commands and imperatives in English, and we're going to do it with the incomparable Avengers.

  • So, first of all, the basics.

  • Here are a couple of examples of the command form from The Avengers.

  • -Dread it.

  • -Run from it.

  • All you need to do is have the infinitive form of the verb and drop the "to" in front of it.

  • For example, the verb "to like" becomes "like."

  • You also have to make sure that there's no subject in front of the verb.

  • Usually you'd say, "I go," "she sings," "my mom works."

  • There's always a subject, right?

  • With the imperative, all you need is the verb "without to."

  • You could add an exclamation point at the end because often when we speak commands, we shout them.

  • -Hulk, stop breaking everything!

  • It doesn't matter how many people you're commanding, that's all you gotta do.

  • If you want to follow along while we check out a couple of different forms of the command form, I'm gonna leave a link in the description box or a free trial of FluentU, so check it out.

  • If you want to form the negative command form, that is "to tell someone not to do something," there's an extra little step you've gotta do.

  • All you need to do is add "do not" in front of that verb stem, that is the infinitive verb without the "to" in front of it.

  • -Please, don't do this.

  • -We have time. We can work it out.

  • If you want to include yourself in the command, so it's more of a suggestion for a group instead of a direct order, you can add "let's" in front of the verb.

  • -Put on the suit. Let's go a few rounds.

  • You can even give warnings or advice with the command form, but it's all dependent on how your voice sounds.

  • If I say, "look out," does that sound like a command?

  • Nope!

  • What if I said something more like this?

  • -Look out! Look out! Look out! Move! Move! Move!

  • Did you notice how the tone of the second word is higher and the volume of the second word is higher?

  • Look out!

  • That's how you signal a warning.

  • If you're loving this video, make sure to give us a quick thumbs up.

  • You can also use the command form to make requests, but make sure you add "please" in front of the command and that you speak in a very nice, calm tone of voice.

  • -Sir, please put down the spear.

  • Now, it's your turn.

  • Think of a verb and turn it into a command.

  • Then turn it into a negative command.

  • Make sure to write in the comments what you came up with, so I can take a look.

  • Let's watch a clip from the "Avengers: Infinity War" trailer.

  • There are three more command forms that you're going to hear.

  • See if you can pick them out.

  • - Evacuate the city.

  • -Engage our defenses.

  • -And get this man a shield.

  • Exactly, they were from King T'Challa, and how do we know that they were command forms?

  • For one, King T'Challa doesn't use a subject, and he only uses the verb stem, that is the infinitive form of a verb without the "to."

  • Let's check our answer.

  • FluentU tells us that we chose correctly.

  • We picked out the imperative.

  • Here's a couple more tests.

  • Can you pick out the imperative forms?

  • - You got a suit?

  • - Yeah.

  • - Then suit up.

  • - Guys...

  • - Call it, captain.

  • - All right, listen up.
