hearty meat dishes we'll indulge your sweet tooth with the most delicious cheesecake plus we'll admire some dreamy art nouveau villas and also enjoy a bit of nature so if that sounds like your idea of a good time we invite you to join us on this tour of Quedlinburg good morning friends how are you today hello hello everyone welcome to our next destination we are currently in Quedlinburg a beautiful medieval town in case you haven't noticed there's been a bit of a theme of the trip we're doing at the moment so we've been showing you lots of timber framed houses and we're purposely visiting towns that have that specific type of architecture yeah exactly we've really wanted to explore some cultural gems and we're excited to be here we took no less than four trains to get here this morning four trains we were up bright in early 4 30 in the morning that's right but you know what i think it's been worth the journey to get here we're super pumped it's still only like 10 in the morning so we've got the whole day ahead of us and we're gonna bring you along so a few little fun facts about this place the castle the church and the old town are listed as unesco world heritage sites i can see why yeah i was just gonna say easy to see why i mean extremely impressive just feels like you're stepping back in time it looks very historic very charming and also this is one of the stops you can do along the romanesque road which is a bit of a road trip you can do here in germany obviously we've been getting around by train but if you wanted to you could drive around and visit little romanesque towns i want to say that this morning sam was complimenting my hat weren't you why are you wearing it again just kidding okay today we had to be up at 4 30 in the morning in order to catch our four trains to get here there was no time to wash my hair and like no amount of dry shampoo was helping me so this is kind of disguising a bit of a mess that's going on but you like my hat right i do like your hat and i'm loving this walk to the town so far you know this feels the most i don't know how i can say it but like authentic old part of the city that we've seen in a while you get a sense of uh you know the age of the place i mean what is this like our third or fourth town yeah that we're visiting with this type of architecture and yeah this one definitely feels the oldest thing and just the way that these these tiny little roads you know they're not made it's a bit of a maze to be honest yeah but it's really cool it's so cool so far our first stop that morning was the Schlossgarten or castle garden which offers a nice vantage point over the city it's red rooftops and church steeples as far as the eye can see the quintessential medieval town of Quedlinburg, Germany welcome to the castle gardens welcome what a beautiful manicure garden this is yes so symmetrical comes from the baroque era where they believe that man could tame nature and have perfect control over it yes and that's why we have trees shaped like little triangles exactly also this garden is the best place for city views oh my goodness it sure is i mean you get the most incredible rooftop views i feel it's amazing how the town has kept its heritage over the years so we couldn't visit the castle since it was closed for renovations but we did get to visit the collegiate church of saint servatius which sits on a sandstone cliff and is an imposing landmark that can be viewed from several angles from the town below this church was dedicated in the year 1129 though it was preceded by earlier structures in the crypt beneath the choir you'll find the royal graves of henry the first who is considered to be the first german king and his wife matilde okay so we are making our way down the hill lots of steps all around we visited the church and it is under restoration as i mentioned earlier so when you go in there's actually a lot of scaffolding so it's a little difficult to appreciate the architecture and the nave but it will be completed in about two years time from the time we're filming this and then we also visited the treasury and the crypt but the only thing is we're not allowed to film in there and that's probably like the most interesting part almost of the church you know seeing the crypt but it's the part that's off limits to cameras off limits to cameras you'll have to go in and experience it for yourself fortunately the treasury is quite small but they have some really beautiful ornaments like the bible that belong to the rulers which is embellished with jewels and things like that and if you're lucky enough to visit in a few years when this entire project has been completed you'll have to let us know how spectacular it looks because they're obviously doing some major work on both the inside and outside that morning we ended up joining a guided walking tour around town to get a good lay of the land and also learn about the town's unique architecture Quedlinburg Germany happens to be germany's largest half timber town with more than 1300 timber frame houses and the cool thing is that you can walk around and see how the style evolved over the centuries that really stretch your arms naturally quite dark too one of the places we visited was the half timbered museum which dates back to the 14th century and shows a very early example of this type of construction inside the museum's courtyard you can see examples of how half-timbered houses were constructed frames walls and all we then continued our walk through town for more examples of how the half-timbered construction style evolved to have multiple protruding levels and more elaborate design elements this town has seriously some of the most interesting architecture we've seen so if you're into that sort of thing it's well worth joining a guided tour because you learn about all the little details that would otherwise go unnoticed then it was time for lunch and you guys know how much we enjoy a good meal we ended up eating at a restaurant in the market square where we were pleasantly surprised by the large portions and hearty cuisine all right guys lunch time is here we found a lovely restaurant just randomly walking around and ordered two monster meals i got three pork medallions and a creamy mushroom sauce and also some fried potatoes with bacon this is a monster dish this is like our main meal of the day so hmm tasty it's so good yeah perfect meal for a cold day like today seriously and then the potatoes bacon marvelous samuel i don't know what i got myself into i ordered the bears platter and it's three big pieces of meat giant thing of chicken we've got pork and we got beef that's what the bear eats yeah it's all the bear eats huh and underneath apparently the bear has a lot of beans as well string beans and bacon bits oh that's a hungry bear and then i have fried potatoes with onions and bacon bits as well a real carnivores meal huh this is a super carnivore meal i got my work cut out to eat all this we made it we're here we checked in yes this time worked we we tried to check in at like what nine in the morning no way your room's not ready yet yeah of course not looks beautiful spacious elegant guys i i need i do need a little bit of a power nap we've been up since four so that's the plan so yeah there you have it that is the room home sweet home for one night this has been a pretty a pretty fast travel pace i would say like we are switching destinations and switching hotels every single night basically except for hamburg we've been moving quick but i mean i love the look of this room beige neutral tones we need a power nap because like i mentioned we were up at 4 am today so quick power nap maybe a coffee then we'll go explore the town a bit more so see you in a bit that afternoon we visited the Lyonel Feininger gallery which bears the name of the german american painter Lyonel Feininger who was born in new york city but traveled to germany at age 16 to study art he was a leader in the expressionist movement and this museum houses many of his works we couldn't actually film any art inside the museums because copyrights but if you enjoy art this gallery is well worth the visit audrey's favorite time tea time or shall we say coffee time since we were up at 4 a.m today we figured a mid-afternoon cappuccino really wouldn't hurt us oh it will not bit of a necessity nice and frothy yeah so we came to cafe vincent super well known for their cheesecakes like there was actually a lineup let's call that lineup worthy cheesecake yes yeah and we're about to see if it is i'm sure guys yeah i'm sure it is how's that it's very good it's gigantic like just wait a second this is the mascarpone and some type of wild berry wow they had loads of different flavors there was mango they had blueberries wild berries they had lemon and thyme but i wasn't sure how adventurous you were feeling yeah berries sound good this time yeah berries are good yeah so creamy so creamy oh i can't wait to try it i would like to just point out that sam nearly went headfirst into a river trying to get the shot we just silky smooth b-roll the things you do anyways so we're going for a little walk at brule park so this park bears the name of my favorite german actor do you remember his name bruhl okay yes that is his last name but you know the eyes no i have no idea i have no idea daniel daniel brewer from goodbye london have you watched that one no i've we've meant to watch that together but we just had to find my favorite german film if you haven't seen it go watch it it's it's a masterpiece anywho's we're going around the park this is a beautiful area because there are so many villas like just beautiful beautiful german mansions yeah oh my built with the absolute like fortitude like and the thing about this park that i'm really enjoying if i can follow the path you're going is it has it's it's a forest park yeah it feels like you're really out of nature it doesn't feel overly manicured and it's a nice little nature escape from the from the old historic center and there you have it and that concludes our day visiting the medieval town of Quedlinburg Germany we hope you enjoyed all the half-timbered buildings rooftop views tasty meals and everything else in between if you enjoyed this video don't forget to subscribe and we invite you to join us on the next episode where it's all about the vineyards and the wine in sally and strut see you then
