scenic alpine town of Werfen in this video visiting the Austrian Alps we'll show you
how to get to Werfen by train we'll take you on a tour of Hohenwerfen castle you can
probably drink it in austria wouldn't you say i would say we'll live out our sound of music
dreams on the most idyllic meadow we'll try to befriend some cows along the way you can hear
our new friends the cows and we'll end the day with a delicious meal in town
jelly belly so we invite you to subscribe and join us on this fun day trip from salzburg
we've made it hello friends welcome to the town of Werfen yeah here we are here we are
got a nice little castle there in the background if you can see that this is the reason we wanted
to go on this day trip basically because it's a scenic little town at the foot of the mountains
gorgeous Hohenwerfen castle right behind us in the Austrian Alps and we're planning to do a little
hike called the sound of music trails so i'm feeling pretty happy yeah oh i'm pumped for it so
yeah let's talk about the train ride over a piece of cake wasn't it piece of cake so you basically
have two different options for the train there is a direct one that is a 40-minute journey however
that one wasn't leaving soon enough so what we did is we had to transfer yeah you overshoot it
you end up overshooting and then backtracking by one stop you overshoot the town by one station
and then come right back on a different train but to be honest the journey is so scenic that
i mean i could have spent another hour on the train oh my gosh it was that nice i mean you were
going through these picturesque towns there were valleys there were mountains (Austrian Alps) they
had it all yeah we were filming the whole time basically and just enjoying the scenery so
so yeah wonderful spot and now we're gonna walk into town first off the castle also i keep calling
this place the Hohenwerfen castle but technically it is a fortress a fortress we are visiting but a
very beautiful one at that and we're going to be taking the footpath that runs along the river but
first sam wanted to run down to the water and show you the color of this river this is the salzach
river which also flows through salzburg and like the color is just stunning it looks like a glacial
river like it kind of has that milky greenish blue like a milky turquoise i would say so yeah yeah
i was i was mesmerized by the turquoise waters had to come down had to get a shot of it yeah
so beautiful so beautiful oh another thing to mention i just saw a sign you can actually go
on little like speed boat boat tours on this river and kind of just zip along so if you're kind of
into that adventure thing you can definitely do that here and yeah like just look forest
mountains this is what i pictured when when i thought of austria like when i think of
travel in austria this is it right here this is us and our elements we've spent
quite a bit of time in cities and towns so we are loving being in nature right now
hi sammy boy hi there
how are you enjoying this walk well it's amazing i mean what's so cool is you have the contrast of
the castle with the forest and then right in front of us it's just farmland it's very fascinating
yeah the contrast and i'm also really excited too i mean we're gonna go visit the Hohenwerfen castle
first but i'm also really excited to just walk in the village and see the architecture
of the different houses it looks fascinating definitely that traditional austrian style
here we are here we are so we've officially entered the footpath bike watch out for those
traffic jams here on the footpath anyways we have officially entered the footpath here
yeah and guys we've been cheating a little bit lately we've been taking the trams the funiculars
today we're earning it we are walking all the way up we're gonna earn those spectacular views
using our own two feet exactly well you know what we're gonna work up a nice big appetite
that's a thing and then enjoy some hearty alpine dishes oh oh there's an elevator okay
this is the way we go up now we're off now we're off on the proper another dirt path but if you
wanted to you can take an elevator not today not today but there is one moment of truth here
for this trip i packed three pairs of long pants we've maybe been here
in germany and austria for two and a half weeks would you say yep okay well we're at the point
where one pair no longer fits the second pair is quite tight and the third one my loose pants
i'm okay in those but that is why this hike is very much necessary so you can probably tell
from the food videos we've been involved we've been stuffing our beaks and all
sorts of things yeah yeah i feel i feel the same way actually fortunately two pairs of
pants that i brought have drawstrings so oh i'm able to expand with the belly i can't
you might have to start purchasing those types of pants if you want coming back here again
jogging pants just wear stretchy jogging pants for your trip to this part of the world but honestly
no regrets i've loved the food every single bite so yeah just gonna have to walk it off walk it off
Hohenwerfen
castle was built between the years 1075 and 1078 and it is considered
the sister castle to Hohensalzburg which is the fortress overlooking the city of salzburg
this particular castle sits on a peak high above the salzach valley
and it is surrounded by mountains (Austrian Alps) one thing to keep in mind before you visit is that
the Hohenwerfen castle is only open from april to november so it's not a year-round attraction
well hello and welcome to the fortress yeah we made it it actually wasn't that long of a walk it
was quite steep what if you when you get up here it's just it's just an amazing feeling to kind of
have earned your views have earned your castle um so yeah we've entered now the price is 13.90 euro
per person and we've decided that the restaurant is completely full apparently not available
anything available for an hour yeah so we're just ordered some food from the concession
and apparently this entitles us to a 40-minute guided tour so that is the only way that you
can see specific areas within the castle so we'll eat and then we'll probably join
a tour i believe they happen on the hour so yeah we should be able to catch it's 12
20 we should be able to catch the one o'clock tour okay guys so we are just considering this a snack
not our main meal of the day no um so we got a burger with a schnitzel
chicken schnitzel yeah what's it chicken yeah it's chicken okay
yeah and a burger bun with tomato and lettuce we're gonna share it and then some kind of grilled
sausage with fries i don't know the name of this sausage it didn't say it just it looks white
but it's not fat like the vice most the white sausage that they eat a lot in bavaria
tastes good could be a veal sausage could also be a chicken sausage i just don't know maybe
just a quick meal because we have 30 minutes before the tour starts
and we did get our tickets look i got the tickets for one o'clock and the tour is the only way to
see certain parts of the fortress like the chapel dungeon torture rooms the arsenal i
think there's like a tower so well worth it you need to go with a guide and you need to book
a spot because they only take a certain number of people every hour the guide the tour is going
to be in german but they're giving us an audio guide in english so that's what we'll be doing um
bye
so
one hour later an hour later we just finished our guided tour of the fortress
and we have some thoughts lots the fortress itself is very interesting and it was really good
going around but yeah the the guide wasn't so into it you're kind of going through the motions of it
um the best part what are the views at the top tower yes so we went up the bell tower the hook
tower actually yeah and you can go right to the very tippy top and then you go outside and you
just walk around in a circle 360 degree views of the mountains (Austrian Alps) you can see the town
below the river you can even see another town off in the distance yeah that was really i mean
that was amazing so if i was to give this place a report card my personal report card would be
the high cup a mm-hmm the actual fortress itself castle itself and a and the views in a
the food and the tour were no not a name or we're like a deer is he but but you know this
fortress is actually really famous for its birds of prey demonstration like they have falcons and
vultures and really all sorts of birds and they do a show twice a day um we missed that yeah i
just caught a few clips of birds flying around this morning yeah but that's why people come here
that's true i mean if we were gonna wait for the next show we wouldn't be able to do
really anything else in town so it is time for us to make our way down
do
well we are on the trail we found it so this is the sound of the music trail we found the entrance
just kind of towards the end of town going up the hill and so far we're the only ones here
we have it all to ourselves and it's nice and shaded on the trail which is really nice
because today is one of those warmer days so you really feel the heat in the sun but here it's like
completely different temperature so much cooler and yeah we're really enjoying it i'm hoping that
there's some kind of little cafe or eatery when we reach the top i wouldn't mind a dessert a coffee
ice cream so we'll see once we get there okay so we found this musical instrument and this
is going to play the do re mi song from the sound of music so i'm pretty pumped for it so you think
that doesn't sound good does it
didn't really quite sound like it but
i mean it says the sound of music trail and then it has the lyrics to dory me
doe a deer a female dear la la la la la la la la right but when we played it it would sound like it
that's okay well guys this has definitely been the most exercise we've had on the entire trip
it's been great to get out and go for two nice long walks today and when we were
walking through town i was started dreading i'm like oh the midday sun was kind of roasting us
it was probably like 20 to 25 degrees as soon as we got into the forest part it's so refreshing
and i just love it and what did you find can you drink the water you think
it's coming down from the mountain wash your hands wash my hands
it feels nice and cold you can probably drink it in austria wouldn't you say i would say i cannot
get diarrhea and i won't be hiking tomorrow yeah this will be your last hike of all time
it tastes earthy i don't know if i'm gonna drink any more it does kind of quench your
thirst maybe it's just for like you know cooling down water there you go
the moment she said oh my gosh don't take a rest first before we film she said
oh this feels so nice oh my gosh and look at the views you just go like this
wow she's a little bit a little washed out but it's the perfect position like it's so
ergonomic after hiking like this is the position you want to be in we can legit
take a nap here oh man i could fall asleep on this wooden bunch i think i might 15 minutes
oh this is so good is that the alarm oh i feel like my back is straightening out
stop talking about let me experience it too also i don't think you realize but you are sleeping
on top of the lyrics to one of the sound of music songs oh mamma mia do you know the raindrops on
roses and whiskers on kittens bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens brown paper
packages tied up with string these are a few of my favorite things and now why not
dun dun
okay so all the benches have different songs from the sound of music this next one
well it starts with high on the hill was a lonely go turn your leg
okay and one more oh my gosh he says this one is oh you're gonna like this
cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with
noodles with noodles hey that's what i'll probably be having for soccer tonight actually seriously
wild geese that fly with the moon on the wings spatula these are a few of my favorite
our natural out of tune singing should prevent us from getting a copyright strike oh my gosh
the ironic thing the ironic thing is that sam comes from a family of musicians like
your grandparents were musicians you're extended relatives and get them jeans
pretty successful musicians didn't get those jeans and neither did you we're both terrible
oh this one you just you form the lyrics is that it do you spin it or why don't you
make up your own that'd be more fun climb every mountain search high and
music hello where's high the sound oh there's high yes
climb every mountain search high and low learn how to sing
if you follow the sound of music trail it'll lead you to an idyllic field which is where
maria taught the children the dory me song and they enjoyed a picnic it's a must visit spot if
you're a fan of the movie but even if you aren't the scenery itself is worth the journey up there
made it to the top yeah you can hear our new friends
the moosies the cows imagine having that bell on and making that noise with
every two well yeah that's what you were saying that's it's a resounding clang it
we is a lot of exercise today we sure did yeah we always got this mountain totally totally worth it
these are actually the best views of the mountains (Austrian Alps) right here this makes it feel like
the town doesn't even exist down below you don't even see it you just see the mountain and you see
some of a few little houses at the base of the mountain that's it i love seeing the valleys
yeah and it looks like they have a few farm houses guest houses like sprinkle
sprinkled throughout yeah and there's someone that's developing an amazing
piece of property on a little hill up there yeah i mean they're gonna have literally the best view
of the entire place but uh yeah totally worth the climb up just so iconic like this is the austria
i picture when i think of austria yeah i know so beautiful and we lucked out with the weather
it looked like when we were planning this trip it looked like we're gonna rain every day and
instead we had sun every day uh yeah yeah how did we get so lucky worked out very well i don't know
so yeah now we're gonna walk back down the hill i doubt we'll film very much because it's basically
the same trail we just showed you but yeah we're gonna head into town and supper hopefully have a
bite somewhere so that's the plan we gotta make up for those cold french fries back in town we
ate at stiege nummer 1 which was amazing seriously one of the best meals we had in austria so we'll
show you that next look what i got here guys what did you get that is the salzburger schnitzel good
look at it i'm looking at it it's looking plump oh look at this stuffed with mushroom mushrooms
it's my lucky day huh and it comes with some potatoes with parsley and that looks
like a nice jelly on the side yeah i'm gonna try it it's still tender and juicy
especially with the addition of the mushrooms i'm gonna try the jelly with the potatoes huh
it's for the meat to compliment the chicken in the mushroom jelly belly
you're right about that one what a compliment it gives it a bit of a sweet and tartness to go along
with the schnitzel that is mighty good so for my dish i kind of ordered blindly because i didn't
understand a whole lot of things on the menu but i got this lovely roast it looks like pork
some of the bread dumplings but in rectangular form carrots potatoes in a gravy and of course
the sauerkraut got to have the sauerkraut and dumplings are good oh look at this pork oh
wow let's try a bit of that that looks good from over here
yeah so tender winning combo just melts totally makes over that lackluster lunch
yeah this is a place to come to my room
well let's explain what really happened so we bolted out of the restaurant after
paying our bill of course we thought we could make the next train if we really
marched on over there boot it on over oh my gosh we got here just as the train was pulling in yeah
and it was gone before we even had a chance to find the ticket machine but you know what this
gives us an hour and a little bit longer here and this is not a bad place to be laundering
i know so now we can properly enjoy the town maybe walk along the river and just
take it in a bit longer a little longer because i mean when you're talking about views like this
like this guys like this sorry back to you it's like there are definitely worse places to be
the train being one of them so um yeah we're gonna hang out here just a little bit longer
the day trip isn't over yet uh the original reason was we're gonna tell them about the friday
did i ask for a receipt i think i did so that was 37 euros and yeah we had two delicious mains
two drinks really great restaurant i've been keeping the bills a little lower in
austria than in germany haven't we yeah and yeah a wonderful restaurant that we'd highly recommend
yes uh like the food was outstanding one of the best meals we've had in austria so far it saved
what would have been a bad food day from yeah yeah it salvaged it the fast food at the fortress
yeah i mean when you compared to what we just had we can't really we can't really
um recommend fortress fast food no unless you're hungry unless you you're hungry as hungry as we
were don't don't eat there for sure don't do it do not do it um and yeah now let's head into town
we spent the extra hour in Werfen walking around the town and snapping
photos of the pastel colored buildings while the sun set behind the mountains
so a bit of unexpected time but we actually really enjoyed it
well guys we have come down to the river to say yeah all good things come to an end you
know what that extra hour was awesome we were so rushed trying to get our to the train the first
time that we i mean we saw a bit of the old town but not really and with that extra hour we got
to stroll around and really completely take it in so yeah it's really nice it's a good place
like i would say you can definitely see this place on a day trip yeah but if you wanted to
stay overnight there are a few activities you can do starting from here obviously multiple hikes but
also you can see some of the biggest ice caves in the world yeah just over that way yeah we saw
a few hardcore hikers like you can tell just by the gear they're wearing that they're that they're
really into it they're checking into a motel and so there's definitely the opportunities to do
those things but you can come on a day trip like we did really get to see and do a lot have nice
food go to the Hohenwerfen castle go to the sound of music sites get lots of exercise and just enjoy
the charming town as well so yeah highly highly recommend this this was not a planned destination
for us no we winged it when we came to when we came to salzburg we actually looked up some other
places to yes but they ended up being like you know two hours one way so we didn't want to spend
four hours you know just taking transport there and back yeah and so we decided on this place
and it was fantastic totally exceeded my expectations likewise yeah so with that
we're gonna say goodbye we have a train to catch and we'll see you in the next episode ciao guys
you
