Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles hello welcome to a random alleyway in chinatown in bangkok and today we're going to be going through the back alleys to the top of the highest skyscrapers in search of delicious food we're just trying to get to know another part of bangkok today how good is that that's any way that you can engage your senses is the best way to discover anywhere in the world especially sight and sound but today we're going to be focusing on taste because i'm with gary the roaming cook he is going to show me some of the most delicious local and unique street food experiences in this area we're just outside of chinatown and he texts me and said meet him down this dodgy little alleyway and he's going to take me for some delicious liver pad kapow so i'm really excited but i got mine where i'm walking down here because everybody's i mean this is what we're doing today we're in this tight little alleyways and then we'll hopefully end up at the tallest most beautiful skyscraper in search of delicious food so let's go hmm all right so this is our first dish we've got more that is liver so we've got pork liver had capacity pork liver stir fried with holy basil loads and loads of chili loads of garlic chef don did actually ask how spicy wanted it and paddy said he wanted it as spicy as he could give him so um for anyone who's a bit off about eating liver um i would recommend you come here and try liver here because i think a lot of people are put off by liver because like when they had it when they were younger it was like cooked to death boiled to death even here in some soups they boil it to death and then reboil it again whereas he just takes fresh liver slices it up and stir-fries it for literally a matter of minutes we're talking two three minutes with loads of chili loads of garlic and it's job done so it's soft uh it's juicy and very very tender and everyone's had a pack of bao everyone's had a pork chocolate chicken packer power beef pack this is something completely different this back alley this is i mean a lot of you watching this might see the location of this restaurant and be like no there's no chance i'm eating down here you know there's cats there's a pet dog and you know on the face of it it looks quite scary as a restaurant location but this is normal for bangkok this is normal for thailand i've had some of the best food i've had on this trip in the provinces in some of the most interesting places including are now a back alley in the middle of bangkok so i did see you do this on your channel and i was so excited and i remember i left a comment on that video saying gary please can we go here i do love liver and as you were saying liver is good for your liver no it's good for your brain so that's why we're so smart isn't it because we eat liver but yeah let me see what it actually tastes like um it would be a shame if i didn't like it in real life it looks delicious it smells great you know i'm going to go all in there two big chunks of liver lots of basil it's drenched in chili already don't need any rice let's just try it out i feel like i need to sneeze because of the chili but i don't want to sneeze because everyone's going to be like my mouth's on fire but that's a good sign i i was worried like so much liver would might be a little bit too much but yeah like you said he doesn't he treats the meat with a lot of respect in the wok he doesn't overcook it it looks absolutely delicious and it tastes even better so thanks gary what else have we got this is just a thai fried red curry with chicken beans and lots of basil leaves and lots of chili we asked for this extra spicy and he chucked in so much chili i'm gonna have to have some rice with this in case it's off the chain in terms of spice my mouth's still absolutely on fire from that liver but this is what you want this is how you engage your senses this is how you get to know a country or a travel destination is use your senses look and feel the places that you're out and most importantly taste the local food it's not too bad and you know this is a dish that we've all had dozens of times in thailand but this is a good one this is a good spicy version of a tyro curry but if you're coming down here to see chef don you have to go for this liver i mean this is a very unique street food dish in bangkok how often do you see liver like this not very often so thanks gary my pleasure yeah so where are we going to next all right so next i'm going to take you to what is probably my favorite noodle store in this area of bangkok and it's only this area to sell these particular noodles cook this way if that's not open i'm going to take you to a famous backstreet curry rice store but hopefully they're both open and we can enjoy both right let's do it right gary's taking me to another alleyway but this time there's still motorbikes driving along but we're actually on this beautiful canal this canal system it's a little bit further outside of chinatown on the way towards khao san road actually we jumped on dreamy and we've gotten here and he's just at the food lady here ordering some crab dishes all right so this one is pour padpon so this is big fat pieces of crab lump meat stir-fried with yellow curry powder this one i've not seen in too many places apart from here this is more crop so crispy fried pork belly with cake hem stir fried with kai kemp says uh more crop pad is salted egg yolk there's also some ginger in here and some fresh green peppercorns and the last one so this is poor pad pickler crab the same white lump meat crab fresh every day fresh in every day from champ on and this is with chili and salt uh also some spring onions a little bit of oyster sauce soy sauce uh and some lime leaves right there so this looks good big chunks of crab from champon where i used to live yeah that's it and um this is with the salt yeah so that's uh chili and salt what's it what are those is that bits of pumpkin that yellow stuff oh no that's uh yellow like banana chilies oh okay oh so spicy uh no not that yeah it's got a bit in there so paprika had pink chilli salt and then you've got some red chillies as well so how good is that that's not even what i could hire so fresh exactly i'm back on trampon beach yeah i can literally i'm like i can hear the waves i can feel the sand i didn't think you could get fresh seafood like this in bangkok especially down some random little alleyway with some granny cooking here like what the hell was going on hello max so then the name says the name says oh this is it is like what people say to yeah high school yeah chonglor is high so so when i came down here i just heard the name and i thought that it was going to be like a proper shop and then i got down here this is got green red and orange chili in there yeah green why is it not blowing my head off um they're not that the the the um the orange chillies aren't very spicy to start with um and yeah i'm not sure why that's the best thing i've had in bangkok yeah this one wait what's this one oh this is the yellow color powder so the same the same meat but now it's tossed in yellow curry powder yellow curry powder i just yesterday a couple of days ago you guys saw in samosa con i had a crab or was it nakom panon yeah in nakhon patom i had um a crab curry with yellow curry powder mmm i didn't like it did you not no did i have like the egg going through yeah i'd like scrambled eggs yeah she's got no egg in there but she's got some milk so there's something about generic curry powder and that sweet crab meat that just works very very well i think because it's so generous the crab meat and when i had that crab curry the other day i was crunching on the shell crunching on bits that are just rogan within the curry she's carefully de-shelled the crab meat here this is unbelievable i don't know honestly i'd come here every day if i live around here this is more of a eat this order every day these two dishes here stand out street food in the whole of thailand thanks man nothing goes to waste down the canal literally everywhere you look there's food isn't it like down that little alleyway just a bloke with like five kilograms of pork knuckles just in a random walk on the random street uh right so what do you want to do next uh i want to take you to see my friend auntie pian papien for some uh some some special bangkok noodles i don't know how much i can eat though i can't eat them should we just like share one or something yeah get a small one yeah right then so this is a wait wait wait wait we ordered noodles but it's dry there's no soup is that normal oh it must be normal no no it's very rare actually it's um that's what they called cora means to drive fries so about me yeah and you know all the staff here right you come here quite often yeah she's one of my few youtube viewers oh one more thing as well they use chicken thigh only here so this is chicken thigh yeah they never ever use breast because obviously to stir-fry breasts can be a little bit dry oh it's lovely right nicely seasoned yeah is this more like chinese food than thai yeah chinese thai mm-hmm so everything in this area anything that comes out of a wok comes from china basically anything out of a wok what about if you have a bowl of cereal it would be um cereal cornflakes gene i just like all the character of the places you've taken us to today like just the fact that you know i mean i don't want to say this in the wrong way but they're quite dirty you know there's stuff on the floor and it's not insanely clean like a western kitchen or something so that's why i know when i first came to thailand i never ate street food i was always put off i was like oh my god i'm gonna get sick and then i'd go to mcdonald's and then i get sick because you can't see the goodies yeah and then as your gut gets used to the chili and the inherent amount of just bits of bacteria as a western person who's used to cornflakes and milk and tea for a diet event yeah you do get a little bit sick the first few days you're here or the first week you're here you're never going to get away from getting a little bit of deli belly or what's the version in thailand bangkok billy yeah it's original in it um but yeah once you actually break your gut in i haven't been sick touch wood from street food this delicious street food the entire time i've been traveling around the provinces for me um this it's all about human connection if i go and eat in a western restaurant not just a western restaurant or an up market or something there's no there's nothing personal about that transaction and i realized this pretty quickly when um we were in lockdown the first time and i was ordering takeaways and stuff and i was i was missing that even though we can't understand each other well very well whoever i'm talking to um it's that human connection of they are giving you something that that is like that is made with love and i feel like you can feel i was gonna start crying no but i know what you mean no i know what you mean that is that is a really sweet way of putting it she's been making these same noodles for 30 or 40 years this is that's all she does so every single bowl she puts her heart and soul into it it's coming towards golden hour the sun's starting to go down so we should probably head towards the big tower we're gonna head to the king power tower it's called the king power tower right mahanapon mahanakon aka the king power tower i don't know if it's the tallest tower in bangkok but it's definitely up there it is oh it is okay um but we're gonna jump on dreamy drive through it's about 20 minute drive and we'll go up to the top now there's going to be no food up there but we just thought it'd be a cool concept for a video to come down to these back alleys with the motorbikes whizzing by to the very highest point of bangkok itself and we can overlook that city and uh yeah i just thought that would be a fun video got nothing better to do on a friday afternoon come again come up we're here okay we're in the lift or the elevator oh god oh oh okay what's up a video oh i don't like it really not me no but it's moving that like oh my ears are popping we must be going really high up oh motion sickness oh i don't like it look oh there's the tower but the thing is you can feel the lift moving so it's giving me when i used to do vr this is just what i used to get motion sickness oh jesus this is not real this is not real this is not real but i am absolutely my ears have popped as well so that's just the lift oh my god i didn't tell my dad oh god i should tell you as well that if you know i'm scared of heights and i said to him so i'm glad you're coming because at least someone will go out on the glass he said no i'm scared of heights as well my ears pop popping straight away i'm glad so we've had a little walk around and it is absolutely ridiculously beautiful isn't it it's stunning especially at this time of day or was it five o'clock beautiful nice cool breeze views of the entire city we've just been sat here like half an hour pointing at things trying to figure out where the airport is having a really good time but we're having a couple of beers here they come this is our second batch just because we need a little bit of dutch courage because i'm terrified of heights and so are you yeah i'm not looking forward to this at all lying on that thing and like the kids are down there and they're just lying there rolling around no bother and there's like quite a lot of attractive thai girls getting their selfies taken and it looks really fun but the second you get to the edge oh your balls just drop oh it's just it's horrible no mine shriveled up you can still come up here and have they don't do food but cocktails draft beer international beers it's expensive this costs like 400 baht for two and they're quite small but needed in this time very but probably no joke the most beautiful spot in bangkok in terms of views i mean you've done rooftops i've done rooftops there's nothing like this i mean this is hands down the best rooftop i've been to anywhere i think i don't think i've been to a better room toughness anyway that beautiful breeze sun going down right gary you're gonna have to go first right so there's no cameras allowed at this point so i'm gonna have to film gary go by himself we were gonna go together don't look down just walk out walk out straight ahead ah walk out straight ahead right now you gotta go down and kiss it you were quite brave but you didn't say a word no no i mean that's because you're scared it's not as personal i'm just not gonna look i think it's worse looking over the side just walk straight look at the sunset and just walk out gary thank you again for today thank you very much for having me we got to see some really unique food and some really unique parts of bangkok down the alleyways and i'm glad we both had never come up here but it's the thing to do in bangkok but um it is worth it isn't it 100 500 what was it 500 baht each to come up expensive beers but i mean i mean look at the views we've enjoyed golden hour we've watched the sunset we even had enough dutch courage to go on the uh you were braver than me but going on to the scary glass roof thing but anyway um stay tuned to the channel we'll be back soon me and gary will probably be doing some other food adventure in bangkok or surrounding provinces soon and next time beers are on you definitely you
