We have two words: encounter and encountered.  You have some options for the beginning  

you are going to use a short i or a short e.  It's just an unstressed syllable so remember  

short and soft and quick. So we have in or en.  Some of you may hear un, just that basic schwa,  

and that's okay too. For the ending you can either  say ter as it's spelled, or you can drop the t  

all together and just say an n, ner. So let's  give that a try first with the t: in counter  

encounter. And now with the n in cow ner encounter  

encounter encounter. Now if we add the ed  in countered in countered give it a try!
