When he walked across a plank over the river, suddenly he saw a very strange thing.

Down in the clear, quiet water was another dog, with another piece of beef!

“Huh?” said the dog to himself.

“What’s this? A dog with a bigger piece of beef is down there! I’ll take it from him!”

He opened his mouth to seize the beef from the dog in the water.

Down dropped his own dinner with a loud splash!

The ripples cleared. In the water was a dog with an empty jaw—just like him.
