  • skim milk, butter, egg,

  • flour, baking powder and salt.

  • - Where the corn?

  • We can't make cornbread without the corn.

  • Here we are at the cornfield.

  • Hello Mr. Farmer, we need corn to make cornbread.

  • Yeah, can you help us please?

  • - Hey there Cookie Monster and Gonger.

  • Welcome to the cornfield.

  • Farmers plant tiny kernels of corn.

  • Those are the seeds. They grow all summer.

  • By fall, those tiny kernels have grown into tall stalks.

  • Along each stalk, there are ears of corn.

  • The corn can be harvested

  • by a big machine called the grain combine.

  • You can't see the corn because it grows inside a husk,

  • but when you peel it back, you can see

  • that inside is the yellow corn on the cob.

  • Once the corn is harvested, then it's shipped

  • to the grocery stores and farmer's markets.

  • You can eat corn as a side dish,

  • in salsa or even right off the cob.

  • Here's some corn to make cornbread, Cookie and Gonger.

  • - [Cookie] Oh Boy, thank you Mr. Farmer.

  • Corn, corn, we're going home with corn

  • - Now we have everything we need to make the cornbread,

  • let's check the recipe.

  • Okay, first take the corn kernels off of the cob.

  • - Okay, off of the cob. Here we go.

  • Hi-yah! - [Gonger] Wow, okay.

  • Put the corn in the bowl.

  • - [Cookie] Okay, corn into the bowl.

  • Now pour in half a cup of skim milk.

  • - [Cookie] Okay.

  • - [Gonger] And a quarter cup of melted butter.

  • - And mix 'em up! - Mix 'em up.

  • Add the flour. - [Cookie] Here we go.

  • Now the baking powder.

  • And mix 'em again. - Mix it again.

  • (mixer buzzing)

  • - Okay. (mixer speeding up)

  • Welcome to the pumpkin farm.

  • You probably have seen pumpkins get carved

  • into Jack-o-lanterns at Halloween,

  • but did you know that inside the pumpkin are pumpkin seeds?

  • To grow pumpkins, all you have to do

  • is plant the seeds in the ground.

  • The pumpkin starts out as a little sprout

  • then becomes a vine.

  • At first the pumpkins are green.

  • When they get bigger they turn orange.

  • When the pumpkins are done growing,

  • they're cut off the vines with special shears.

  • Some of the pumpkins are grown in a field

  • where you can pick out your very own.

  • It's called a pumpkin patch.

  • Welcome to the Mustard Factory where mustard is made.

  • The mustard you eat in a sandwich is grown in a field.

  • Mustard seeds come from a plant that has yellow flowers.

  • After time, the flowers turn brown, then turn into pods.

  • A machine called a combine takes the seeds from the pods

  • and a tractor brings them to a factory like this one.

  • That's when we start making mustard.

  • First, the mustard seeds are ground.

  • Then the seeds go up a big pipe

  • into a tank filled with water and vinegar.

  • Next, we add turmeric and paprika.

  • After that the tank spins really fast

  • to mix the ingredients.

  • Then the mixture goes through mills,

  • which grinds it all together

  • and turns it into thick yellow paste, called mustard.

  • Then, we put it into bottles like you see at the store.

  • You can eat mustard on all kinds of food,

  • like burgers, pretzels, and turkey sandwiches.

  • - Well Cookie Monster, that's because mushrooms are grown

  • in different ways than fruits and vegetables.

  • Come on, I'll show you.

  • Mushrooms need darkness to grow.

  • So we grow them inside these growing houses.

  • First, we start with mushroom compost.

  • That's a special soil that helps them grow.

  • Then we add mushroom spawn.

  • We water them every day to keep them moist

  • and with the little bit of time mushrooms grow.

  • There are lots of different kinds of mushrooms

  • like oyster, shiitake, portobello

  • or good old button mushrooms, like these.

  • Mushrooms are picked when they're grown

  • and ready to eat.

  • Here you go.

  • Take these to make your mushroom quiche, Cookie and Gonger.

  • - Oh, lets look at the recipe.

  • - Then, we're gonna saute the mushrooms

  • in a little bit of olive oil.

  • - Then, add a dash of salt and a sprinkle of pepper.

  • - And a little bit of pepper. - Yeah.

  • Then we'll beat together the eggs and the milk.

  • - Now lay the cheddar cheese and the mushrooms.

  • Then we pour in the eggs and the milk.

  • - Then put the quiche into the oven to bake.

  • Sweet potatoes are a root vegetable that grows

  • in the ground.

  • They grow in warm weather and when they're ready,

  • they're moved to a different field

  • and planted in rows by big machines called transplanters.

  • When the sweet potatoes are ready,

  • farmers harvest them by hand, placing them in buckets

  • and then dumping them into large wooden bins.

  • After the potatoes have been harvested, they're cleaned,

  • sorted based on size

  • and shipped to restaurants and supermarkets.

  • Sweet potatoes come in lots of different colors.

  • Orange, purple, white.

  • They can be mashed, made into a casserole.
