He rose to fame for his roles in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I and Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Series. 

Additionally, he has acted in American films, including Pacific Rim: Uprising, and is currently working on several new projects. 

Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about Mackenyu.

He comes from a family of entertainers.

Born on November 16, 1996, Mackenyu comes from a family with a strong entertainment background, as his father is the late Sonny Chiba, an actor and legendary martial artist. 

He also has a brother and half-sister who are also in showbiz. 

Despite his family's background in the entertainment industry, he wasn't pressured into becoming an actor by his father.

Instead, he took inspiration from Japanese actor and singer Haruma Miura.

He told Vogue, "I have been very familiar with the industry since I was a little boy, but my father never pressured me into being an actor.

It was something that slowly developed inside me over time.

The most important thing I learned from him [Sonny Chiba] was to find my own path in the industry. Just to be myself."

He started acting at the age of 16.

Mackenyu developed an interest in acting during his teens and began his career at 16 when his manager noticed his talent. 

He told Numéro Netherlands, "My manager saw me in a short project when I was 16 and was impressed.

That was the start and acting opportunities followed."

He landed his first lead role in a feature film called Take a Chance in 2015.

In that year, he also starred in "Tadaima," which won awards at film festivals.

After working on these two projects, he decided to continue acting in Japan, stating that he would be able to learn more there given the variety of roles available.

He's a man of many talents.

Mackenyu is a multi-talented individual with a wide range of skills and interests.

Growing up, he learned horseback riding, Japanese archery style called yabusame, and achieved a high ranking in Kyokushin Karate. 

He was also skilled in water polo, gymnastics, and wrestling.

Given his athletic abilities, it's not surprising that he performs most of his own stunts in movies. 

In addition to sports, he is musically inclined.

He played the piano and was a part of his high school's brass band, where he played the saxophone and flute.

What's more, he can sing as well, as demonstrated by his Tokyo remix of Chainsmoker's song 'Closer' on YouTube.

He dyed his hair to embody Roronoa Zoro

Mackenyu grew up idolizing the no-nonsense swordsman.

He told Netflix, "I was born in 1996, so ONE PIECE has been around my entire life…

If you're Japanese, it's impossible not to know about it."

Zoro is known for his charismatic personality and formidable fighting skills.

Yet, one of Zoro's most recognizable features is his bright green hair.

To truly embody the character, Mackenyu went the extra mile by dyeing his own hair green.

He also had his ears pierced for the show.

He said, "They were painful. But for Zoro, I'd do anything."

He underwent jaw training for One Piece.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Mackenyu spoke about the challenges he faced portraying Roronoa Zoro.

He mentioned that his experience with using two swords in previous live-action roles helped him fit the character.

However, mastering three swords, including one held in the mouth, required specific training, including jaw training

He said, "The training I did for One Piece was specific for Zoro and the skills needed to really be him. My jaw had on-the-job training!"

He has been in many live-action manga adaptations before One Piece.

While many international viewers are encountering Mackenyu for the first time in One Piece, he's no stranger to live-action adaptations of anime and manga. 

In fact, his filmography screams anime and manga lover.

He has appeared in live-action versions of popular titles like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Knights Of The Zodiac.

He has a clothing line.

With the influence he gains from his popularity, Mackenyu promotes high-end fashion brands.

He's partnered with fashion brands like Tiffany & Co, Fendi, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton, even starting his own fashion line called 'INCRM.' 

He told Vogue, "I love clothing and jewellery. I wanted to create a curated wardrobe with just the pieces I like."

The actor worked with designer Keiji Wakabayashi to bring his vision to life.

He can sleep anywhere and any time he wants

In a 2021 interview on YouTube, his former co-star, Takanori Iwata, who worked with him on a film called The Master Plan, shared that he often found Mackenyu soundly asleep on the floor when he walked onto the set. 

While this might seem like a humorous anecdote, Mackenyu's response sheds light on the challenges actors face.

He explained that since taking on the responsibilities of being an actor, he has struggled to get proper sleep.

To cope with this, he has learned to sleep at any given opportunity he gets, whether it be on the set of the film itself or someplace else.

He wants to be a role model for Japanese actors

In 2018, Mackenyu starred in the movie "Pacific Rim: Uprising."

After this Hollywood role, he shared in an interview with Pretty Smart Magazine that he took on this opportunity to inspire other Japanese actors.

He said, "I just wanted to become a role model for them... I'm based in Japan, but you know, in the future, I want to be an actor who can act in Japan and Hollywood and have fans there.

Like I said before, I want to be a role model for Japanese actors and Asian actors who really want to come to Hollywood."

He is married.

In January 2023, Mackenyu announced that he is married.

His wife is a non-celebrity whom he has been dating for a long time.

His marriage was announced alongside his younger  brother's marriage, in a statement released on  their late father's birthday.

He wrote, "From now on, we will continue to support each other while spending precious time together. It would make me happy if you would watch over us warmly."
