  • But not only test you, if you don't know the words that I will be talking about, we're actually going to learn them because they're amazing, they're beautiful, and most of them are C1 or C2 level, which means that if you want to sound more like a native speaker, if you want your English to be more beautiful, watch this video up to the very end and learn these words.

  • Now, many people estimate that there are more than a million words in the English language.

  • In fact, there was a project by Harvard University and Google in I think 2010 and they estimated that there are a total of 1,022,000 words in English.

  • But please don't panic, you don't need to know all of them to speak confidently and fluently.

  • But when you see a massive number like this though, it's also important to remember that this includes different forms of the same word.

  • It also includes a lot of words that we could call archaic.

  • They're not used in modern English.

  • In this video, I have gathered 20 English words that I consider to be beautiful and I'm going to show you how they can be used in a sentence.

  • You actually have a task during this video.

  • I want you to listen to all the words and remember how many of those you knew and how many you didn't know.

  • It's the time when you're not working or doing other duties.

  • Here's an example.

  • Most people only have a limited amount of leisure time.

  • This word is a B1 word.

  • The next word is staycation.

  • It's basically a vacation spent at home or nearby.

  • Very popular in California.

  • So for example, you have 3 days of work and you live in the Bay Area.

  • A staycation could be you stay at home but you go to Sausalito for a day or you go to San Francisco for a day.

  • So you're not flying anywhere or you're not going too far.

  • The term staycation is a combination of the words stay and vacation.

  • It first appeared in print in the United States in the mid 2000s and the concept quickly gained popularity due to the financial crisis of 2007-2008 when many people were trying to find more affordable ways to enjoy their time off.

  • It became even more popular during the pandemic.

  • Let's look at an example sentence.

  • Due to the pandemic, they decided to have a staycation and explore local attractions.

  • It's a B1 level word.

  • Now let's move to the next word.

  • Tender

  • Showing gentleness, kindness and affection.

  • Or soft and delicate in texture.

  • You've probably heard about jitters, a sense of panic or extreme nervousness.

  • Glimmers, on the other hand, produce sensations that make you feel calm and joyful and grateful.

  • Glimmers are small moments of joy or peace that arise from appreciating simple things like the colors of a rainbow, the scent of a flower, or the sound of the rain.

  • The term glimmers has gone viral, where, of course, on TikTok.

  • Some TikTok users are teaching viewers how to notice those special moments.

  • Others are documenting their own glimmers.

  • That's a really cool word, because if you pause to notice the pleasure you're experiencing and savor the moment, then your mental health and nervous system automatically benefit.

  • Learning to find glimmers helps to enhance well-being and reduce stress.

  • Sometimes you hear your favorite song in the grocery store, and this is an example of glimmers.
