Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Studio Classroom founder Doris Brougham passed away on Tuesday, a day after her 90th birthday. Brougham, who dedicated over seven decades to Taiwan, died due to multiple organ failure. The popular English learning institution unveiled that all her assets will be donated as per her will. Seattle-born Brougham arrived in Taiwan in 1951, following the Chinese Civil War. Initially served as a missionary in Hualien, she noticed Taiwan's lack of quality English education. In the 1960s, responding to the increasing demand for English learning in Taiwan, Brougham founded Studio Classroom, which became a beloved resource for generations of English learners in this country. In June 2023, former President Tsai Ing-wen presented Brougham with a Taiwanese passport, making her a naturalized citizen. Wow, a passport for me. You know, I've always felt like I'm a Taiwanese anyway, but now I'm a full-fledged citizen. So I can even do more to help you. She also received a nationality certificate and national ID card from Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an in 2023. Chiang remarked on Brougham's passing and expressed his gratitude for her lifetime dedication. Last year, I was honored to award her our national ID card. She was a Taipei citizen who made us proud. We're very sad to hear about her passing. As an English teaching pioneer, Brougham's impacts on education and the countless lives she touched will be remembered fondly.
