  • So the season of abundance with delicious fruits and vegetables is upon us and so are the fruit flies.

  • So bad they're already flying around my house.

  • You ever, you know, have them flying around the kitchen?

  • Rebecca Cole shows us a DIY trick to stop them from, pun intended, bugging you.

  • And here they are.

  • These buggers waste no time flying in to juice your fruits, getting fat, laying eggs, and if not taken care of, those eggs turn into maggots.

  • Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know what you're saying, not very appealing, but here's the deal.

  • One fruit fly lives about 50 days, lays eggs every single day, about 50 of them.

  • Do the math, in no time you are going to have a swarm of them if you don't take care of them.

  • So here's a homemade trap that's easy to do and let me tell you, it works.

  • So for this you need an empty plastic container like a apple cider vinegar and a little bit of water.

  • So we're going to start by cutting off the top of the water bottle.

  • Okay, to the bottom we're going to add a little bit of water, about the same amount of apple cider vinegar, and then one or two drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid.

  • Okay, we're going to mix that together.

  • So now we're going to take the top of the bottle, remove the cap, recycle that.

  • We're going to invert this and place it like a funnel inside the container like so.

  • So here's what's going to happen.

  • The fruit flies are attracted to the apple cider vinegar.

  • They fly in and whoops, they can't get out.

  • Unfortunately they drown and in no time, look at the bottom of this, hundreds, literally hundreds of fruit flies.

  • So that's one way to keep the fruit flies away.

  • Also you can do some kitchen maintenance to make sure they stay away.

  • For example, if you have any fruit or vegetables left out on the counter, they become a breeding ground for hungry fruit flies.

  • Be sure to keep your countertops clean, wiping down any spills or drips.

  • Now if you like to leave fruits and vegetables on the counter, don't cut them up and be sure to wash the skin.

  • And finally, if you collect kitchen compost, which I recommend you do, be sure you dump it daily.

  • And don't forget that filter.

  • Look at mine.

  • Somebody forgot.

  • We've got eggs ready to hatch here.

  • So it looks like I've got some cleaning to do.

  • Rebecca Coles, WCCO News.

  • I hope nobody was eating breakfast right there.

  • I mean, that actually was very helpful.

  • It was very helpful, but it was that when she tilted the bottle.

  • I don't need to see that.

  • This is at 100.

  • So pretty slick trap, but Rebecca will post instructions on her Instagram along with other DIY tips, recipes and fixtures.

So the season of abundance with delicious fruits and vegetables is upon us and so are the fruit flies.
