I go back to Seattle, where I have my office.

And I say, "You've never been there."

Now, there's certain things that are different about Poland than America.

We were at the end of one of our 3.5-day leadership development seminars,

and a participant came up at the end,

Maybe some of you are students, but when I ask the question:

"How many of you spend 8 hours a day at work?"

作為一個人,你算是成品

Let's say you work, raise your hand, 8 hours a day.

還是仍在加工的半成品?

OK, 9 hours a day?

你會怎麼回答?

10 hours a day?

大家都說半成品

Come on 11? Come on 12?

那我再問 你這半成品在哪加工?

See? OK, I rest my case. (Laughter)

在哪繼續成長?

You work more than you sleep.

很多人會回答研討會

You spend more time at work awake than anywhere else in your life,

宗教組織

so the workplace is an extremely important part of your life.

或靠閱讀提升自己等等

Now, I ask people, I'm going to ask you.

我會問:"工作場所呢?" 他們會反問:"不會吧"

As a human being, are you a finished product,

那和自我成長有關?

or are you a work in progress?

因此這就是我的使命

What would your answer be?

幫大家將工作場所

Work in progress, everybody says that.

變成幫助自我成長的地方

I go, "OK, where do you do your progressing?

很多美國人這麼想

Where do you do your developing?"

生活歸生活,工作歸工作

And people talk about seminars,

兩者怎麼會有關聯?

and they talk about their religious institutions.

有些人... 有雷射筆嗎?能用嗎?

They're reading books and so forth.

太好了

And I say, "What about the workplace?" And they go, "Workplace?

有些人有生活有工作

What's that got to do with, you know, progressing?"

他們試圖平衡、結合兩者

So this is my mission in life, really.

有人會說:"才不是,我的生活..."

It's to help people turn their workplace

我想很多在這演講過的人都說

into a place where they can grow and develop.

"我有自己的生活 而工作是生活的一部份"

In America, this is kind of the way it's seen by many people.

"但不是我生活的全部"

It's like I have a life and I have work.

How do these two relate to each other?

Some people have it -- Let's see, do I have a laser here? Does this work?

Yeah, oh, cool.

So, some people have a life and a work

他說:"我媽說幹嘛這樣"

and they're trying to put them together in some equal fashion.

Other people say, "You know what? No, my life --"

為什麼不找個正當的工作?

I think some of the people who were up here, performing,

為什麼這樣說呢?

are this way: "I've got a life. And my work is a part of my life

他說因為他媽媽屬於 老一輩的波蘭人

but it's not my whole life."

那一輩認為最重要的就是 找份工作

This is what I experience in Poland:

不管什麼工作,不管適不適合你

I experience that --

不管是否 和自己想做的事情有關連

(Laughter)

有工作?那就守住飯碗

I was giving a talk recently in Wrocław, and a young man came up to me,

他媽媽說:"天啊 就不能好好找份工作嗎?"

he's a photographer,

我將告訴你 為何我建議大家最好...

and he said, "My mother said, 'Why are you wasting

有多少人現在有工作?

the education that we gave you?

我將建議大家...

Why don't you go get a real job?'"

把現有工作辭了 做好心理準備

And, because --

別緊張,沒事的

He said, "My mother is from the older generation in Poland,

where the important thing is to have a job.

波蘭人通常築道牆

It doesn't matter what the job is, it doesn't matter if it fits you or not.

隔在工作和生活之間

Doesn't matter if it has anything to do with what you really want to do.

You've got a job? Keep the job.

家庭,社交圈,朋友

"For Pete's sake, why don't you get a job, so you'll have a job?"

I'll tell you in a minute why I'm going to advocate that all of you --

In a minute you're going to see, I'm going to advocate

不知道對方是否有小孩 生活上是否遭遇困難

that you quit your job. So standby.

Don't get nervous, it's alright. (Laughter)

怎麼能將工作和生活分開?

This is what I notice a lot in Poland.

在生活和工作上 你們都還是人

People actually build a wall

所以我有個建議

between their life and their workplace.

My friends have told me that in the old days

your family system, your social and your friends

工作重要的不是 你做了什麼

were completely separate from work.

不只是你做了什麼

They said, "You can work beside someone for years

and not know really the name of their spouse

or if they have children or any problems going on in their life."

It's completely separate.

So what I'm saying is you can't separate --

或者說 不只是今天工作發生了什麼事

How can you separate your life from your work?

而是在工作進行的過程中

You are a human being in both of those places.

你發生了什麼事

So I've got a suggestion for you here.

兩人一起工作

Oh, you can't see that.

一個下班回家說

It's a really cool picture, but you can't see it.

天啊真是一團糟,我會怎樣怎樣

(Laughter)

另一個下班回家說

It's not what you made today, when you go to work,

老兄,我真的學到很多 真不可思議

it's not just what you made,

所有人得到經驗 有些人得到教訓

but what are you being made into.

這是我最喜歡的名言 艾略特說的

It's not just what you produced for the company,

快速切入正題

but what is being produced in you

我認為人生有項任務 可以分成3部分

while you're producing that for the company.

一,發掘自我 二,展現自我

Or like this: It's not just what happened today at work,

三,結合前兩項改變世界

but what is happening inside of you

我建議你們把工作,工作場所

while all that stuff is happening at work.

變成教室或道場 因為我有在練合氣道

Two people go to work, side by side:

就是當成能練習做自己的地方

One person goes home at the end of the day and says,

為什麼?

Oh my God! What a disaster... I'm going to... I..."

你的同事每天都在等著你

The person working right beside them goes home and says,

而且是你得共事的笨蛋

"Man, I really learned a lot. This is incredible."

要知道最糟的人 就是最好的老師

So, "Everyone gets the experience, some get the lesson."

但那是高級班,懂吧?

My favorite quote from T.S. Eliot.

每天發生的所有事情都是一門課

I'm going to rip through some of this.

我知道這用波蘭文怎麼講 但有人說不要這樣講

I think we show up with an assignment of 3 parts:

discover who we are, express it into the world

in such a way that makes a creative difference.

Now, I'm going to suggest that you turn your job, your workplace

不過你內在會改變

into a classroom, or a dojo. I do a little Aikido.

當你下班回家後

It's like a place where you can practice being who you are.

你該這樣看待工作上發生的事情

Why not?

當然有期末考 但到那時就太遲了

Your faculty is waiting for you every day.

另外,英文的"工作(job)"一詞

And the faculty are those idiots you have to work with.

源自古英文的"gobbe"

(Laughter)

表示一團東西

You know. In fact, the worst person there is your most important teacher.

所以在古代 你要將東西從這頭搬到那頭

But that's the advanced class, OK?

你的報酬來自

The curriculum is all that happens to you all day long.

移動多少塊,或多少團東西

I know the word in Polish, but they told me not to say it.

所以進進出出

But it's all the stuff that happens to you during the day,

現在則是收文發文

that's your curriculum.

And, you know what? There are no grades

每天不管在哪,不管做什麼

except what happens inside your body

when you go home at the end of the day.

That's how you measure what happens at work.

至於我,我不想有個"工作(job)"

And there is a final exam, but by then it's too late.

A "job" by the way, the word "job,"

我建議你不要找"工作(job)"

comes from the old-English word, "gobbe,"

而是要找"志業(work)"

which means, "a lump of something."

你的志業是什麼?

So, in the old days you took stuff from here, and you moved it over here.

你生而為人的志業是什麼?

You got paid by how many lumps, or "gobbes,"

英文的"志業(work)" 源自希臘文"erg"

you moved from here to here.

我想問問在場學物理的 這樣講對不對

So, in, out, in, out.

意思就是移動一公克物品一公分 消耗的卡路里

Today: in basket, out basket.

記得沒錯的話 答案是101,對吧?

In basket, out basket.

All day every day, no matter where you are, whatever level.

希臘文"erg"接著演變成德文"werk"

You take stuff in, you move it over here.

再變成英文"work"

That's a job.

所以"志業(work)"一詞代表 有方向的能量運用

Personally, I don't want to have a job.

有目的地使用能量

If that's a job, I don't want one, OK?

所以我認為你們該

I recommend that you not have a job,

辭掉"工作(job)" 找到"志業(work)",懂嗎?

but you look for your work.

這是件非常重要的事

What is your work?

接著我要快速講個真實故事

What is the work that you're here for?

我替一位女士上主管研習課

"Work" comes from the Greek word for "erg,"

她經營一家西雅圖大公司

which, I think, I'm going to look at my physics man here,

她的幾個副總裁也一起上課

I think it's how many calories it takes to move one gram one centimeter.

就叫她夏洛特吧

If I remember my physics right, 101. Is that close enough?

但其他人背地裡都叫她"龍夫人"

So, work got switched from "erg" to "werk" in old German,

在研習課上,她說

which then became our word, "work."

"這門課精彩又有趣,但是..."

So, "work" is energy with a direction.

"和領導、經營公司有關嗎?"

It's purposeful energy.

我接著問她:"你會想做什麼?"

So, personally I think you should

"如果你不用每天上班?"

quit your job and find your work. Okay?

她回答"會在家和孫子玩"

It's seriously a very important thing to do.

我說:"那就這麼辦"

Now, I want to tell a story about this, real quickly.

同時也請幾位副總裁做筆記

I was doing an executive seminar for a woman

把她的話寫在白板上

who ran a big corporation in Seattle,

接著我問她 "陪孫子要做哪些事?"

and her team of vice-presidents.

她回答:"首先要整理好家裡"

We'll call her Charlotte.

我問她"什麼意思?" 她說"要確保家裡的安全"

And behind her back, they called her "the dragon-lady."

"確保有好玩的東西"

OK? So, (Polish) in Polish?

"讓孫子可以玩"

How do you say, "dragon lady"?

"確保有足夠的食物和玩具"

Audience: Smoczyca. J.S.: Yeah, like that, OK.

"接著就把自己心態調整好"

So, at this point in the seminar, she says,

"怎麼說呢?" 她回答:"要準備好"

"This is sweet and wonderful, but what has this got to do

"展現我的關心"

with leadership and running this organization?"

她的話都寫在白板上

And I said, "OK. What would you do with your life

"小孩來之前,你要做什麼?"

if you didn't have to come to work every day?"

"在門口蹲著打招呼"

She said, "I'd go home and play with my grandchildren."

"為什麼要蹲著?"

I said, "OK. Let's go with that."

"我想用同樣高度向小孩打招呼"

And I asked one of the vice-presidents to take some notes.

"接著你會做什麼?"

So they went up to the easel, flip-chart.

"陪著他們,確保不會出意外"

And I said, "What is this about your grandchildren?"

"有機會也可以教教他們什麼"

She said, "Well, first of all, I have to get the house ready."

她的話都寫在白板上

"What does that mean?" "I want to make sure it's safe.

接著她說"最後就在門口送小孩離開"

and that there's some interesting things there

講完後她沉默

for them to do,

有點感動

that they have enough food and things to do,

我問"怎麼了?" 她說"這很溫馨"

and then get myself ready. I've got to have the right attitude."

"但我還是不懂 這和領導有什麼關係"

"What is it?" "I've got to be ready and show them

我是她的顧問嘛

how much I care about them, and so on."
