We learn by doing, and I've spent years, literally years, just asking people what they do to stay in shape or what they do to just naturally be thin, right?

Some people say, I've just always been this way, but when you start actually looking at their habits to really eat like a skinny person or eat like someone that's in shape or eat like someone that's low body fat, you start finding there's these common denominators.

And we're just gonna jump right into them.

This is years of me talking to people and finding things that aren't quite so extreme, but just make sense.

When you look at it, you say, you know what?

Sally does kind of live like that and she's in shape.

So let's just jump right into it.

The first thing that I noticed that people do that are in shape or that are thin, they forget to eat.

It's not even they're doing it on purpose.

It's a common thing.

If you follow them around, they forget to eat.

And I was sitting down with an Academy Award-winning producer friend of mine.

Yes, he has an Oscar.

He's an awesome dude.

And he was telling me about his wife that's always been thin.

He struggled with his weight and he's had a tremendous transformation.

He was telling me, you know, she just forgets to eat.

And it's funny, that's so true.

That is such a common one.

And more often than not, it's forgetting to eat breakfast.

Sometimes it's forgetting to eat dinner, you know?

And the funny thing is, is metabolically, this is doing an amazing thing.

You're emulating a fast.

I mean, you're keeping insulin levels low.

You're keeping glucagon levels high.

Everything from a mechanistic standpoint is telling you, yes, you're going to oxidize more fat and you're putting yourself into this deficit, into this depleted state where mitochondrial changes occur.

It just makes sense, right?

Which leads me to sort of the next thing that people do is they'll eat random amounts at somewhat random times.

Like I've been around a lot of in shape people before, and I'm not talking the fitness type people that are obsessive about things.

I'm talking about just naturally kind of walking around looking good, right?

These people will end up eating random amounts, sometimes large amounts, sometimes small amounts with no particular rhyme or reason.

Sometimes it's a big breakfast, sometimes a small breakfast, sometimes a small lunch, big lunch, and it's kind of random.

And this has a tremendous impact on ghrelin, on leptin, on adiponectin.

It has all these different things that influence not only our behavior, but influence how our cell metabolism works.

So of course there's epigenetics and there's polymorphisms and there's regular genetics that influence these things.

But also we have a lifetime of just eating habits and a relationship with food that we may or may not even know exists.

The third thing that I've noticed with people that are in shape or thin, just naturally, is they tend to prefer to operate on an empty stomach.

They tend to be that way.

They're usually the people that like to get up and train on an empty stomach, or they like to quote-unquote not do something on a full stomach, or they like to use their brain on an empty stomach, or they say they think clearer on an empty stomach.

They're people that are just skewed towards operating that way.

Now, that doesn't mean that's the case with everybody, but then you look at other people that say, no, I need to have fuel in my system.

I need my M&Ms when I'm cramming for this exam.

A lot of times those people look different.

Now, there's obviously going to be different theories here and different truths, right?

This is what I've experienced.

There tend to be these people that prefer to operate on less, and they also tend, in my experience, to be leaner.

It makes the biggest difference when you're trying to just simply eat less.

The fourth thing that I've noticed, and this might catch a little bit of slack, is they tend to not overdo fatty meals.

Now, this is coming from someone that's been a ketogenic person for a very long time.

The reality is, this is just what I've seen when I talk to people.

But generally speaking, they are the kinds of people that might do two eggs and some egg whites, and they might have it cooked dry instead of in oil, right?

They just, they're aware of a food that is heavy.

Number five is they tend to be the fidgety people, the people that move a lot, sometimes a little edgy.

Now, that doesn't mean it's always the case, but I definitely notice that.

And these are things that you could try to emulate, right?

How do I just artificially make myself a little more fidgety, or do the dishes more, or get up and move around?

It's just kind of what I've noticed with them.

They're always up around the house, always busy.

The next one is in this world, I feel like we have people that eat their feelings and people that starve their feelings.

By and large, I've noticed that people that are thin tend to be the people that starve their feelings, meaning when they get stressed or anxious or mad, they tend to not eat, compared to people that maybe emotionally or stress eat.

It doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.

By all means, remember, there's a lot of ambiguity here.

These are just common denominators based on about a decade worth of surveying people, unbeknownst to me and them.

So it's funny because when they get stressed out, they might say, I just don't have an appetite.

And from a cortisol perspective, this actually works in their favor because when cortisol is elevated, you don't typically want to add fuel in, okay?

Insulin and cortisol, they are opposites in some ways, and we don't want to add a lot of calories to stress.

That's exactly how the corticoid receptors in our gut can actually lead to fat formation, especially visceral fat.

So we have to be really careful with that.

So just be aware of that.

When you're stressed, maybe don't eat.

The seventh one is one that is gonna catch some flack for sure, and that's fine.

And it's just the reality of the situation.

A lot of times, the thin people that I know that are sort of just naturally just living their lifestyle in a thin way, they tend to take a fair bit of supplements and a fair bit of shakes and things like that.

They're the kinds of people, a lot of times, that buy shakes.

Oh, I have a shake, or, you know, there's also plenty of unhealthy people that do that too.

So being aware of it, that's just kind of how it rolls.

But there's also an emphasis on like micronutrition.

They're the people that take supplements.

They try to get a little bit of an added bonus here.

Maybe that's not always the best because like I love the approach of people like Paul Saladino and things like that where it's nutrient quality.

I just, again, it's things that I've observed.

Number eight, they tend to be a little bit neurotic.

They tend to be the people that are a little, and maybe that's just a flat-out personality type, and maybe that's why they're fidgety.

They tend to be the little edgier people, a little more neurotic.

Number nine, this is a weird one, but they tend to be chocolate eaters.

I have noticed that almost, like, I shouldn't say almost everybody, but a good percentage, probably 60 to 70%.

People that I know that are thin, they consume a fair bit of chocolate.

Like, they're like, I like my dark chocolate.

I like, is it just a weird selection thing where they have this affinity for dark chocolate, or is it actually having an impact?

Because for me, I love dark chocolate, and it kills my appetite, and it also gives me an energy boost that I feel really good with.

It's bizarre, but maybe that's something that we should factor in, like little bits, little cheat meals.

Maybe they get the treat so they don't feel like they have to indulge in other places, and chocolate's very easy for that.

It's quite interesting.

Number 10 is I noticed they like to spend time outside.

That's kind of an obvious one, but they move around a lot, and they tend to spend time outside, and that's something that I think a lot of us can game.

Number 11 is I've noticed there's somewhat of possibly even an unhealthy relationship with the input-output relationship with food, meaning they have a fundamental understanding of energy balance, and sometimes it wrecks their life, but sometimes it also just works.

For example, I know a lot of skinny people that will eat a very big meal, and then they will just regulate.

They will auto-regulate by not eating much the next day or maybe even overexercising the next day, and I'm not condoning, and I'm not saying it's good, bad, or ugly, quite frankly.

What I'm suggesting is that there's a fundamental understanding of energy balance in homeostasis there, and it's not necessarily considered correct in today's world to look at it like that.

We shouldn't be saying, hey, go eat, and then starve yourself the next day, but the reality is we do need to look at energy balance over more than just the course of a day, and if you do overindulge, it's not punishment to restrict a little bit the next day.

It's called exercising restraint and finding energy balance over the course of a longer period of time versus just one day, and people that are thin tend to naturally do that, sometimes to an unhealthy degree.

Number 12, I've noticed a lot of times they are the people that order water with lemon, and call it what you will.

Maybe it's just a habit.

Maybe it's just a trait.

Maybe people just see that, or maybe it's just because they're consuming water and not something else.

Number 13 is a huge one.

People that are thin, in my perspective, from what I've seen, tend to eat a bigger lunch.

Lunch seems to be the big meal.

It's like light breakfast or even skip breakfast.

Big lunch, maybe with friends, and then moving on to dinner is just something light, simple.

No, I had a big lunch.

How often have you heard that from your thin friends?

I had a decent lunch.

I ate lunch kind of late.

They're aware of that.

They don't just feel like three square meals.

And I'm not saying they're better than anybody.

I'm just saying these are the things we should be aware of.

And there's a huge metabolic benefit to having a big lunch.

So as a matter of fact, a lot of the Mediterranean regions do that, and they have tremendous lipid profiles, tremendous glucose excursion area under the curve, and obviously longevity.

And finally, number 14, I notice a lot of them are actually the ones that don't spend a ton of time in the gym.

They do quick workouts.

They're usually in and out in less than a half an hour.

Maybe that has something to do with the cortisol.

Maybe it has something to do with how much energy leaves them for the rest of the day.

That's called the constrained energy model.

Maybe they're working out less, but they end up expending more throughout the day.

And if they worked out more, they'd expend less throughout the day.

And it's arguably better to expend more throughout the day than it is in one concentrated period, yada, yada.

Point is, is these common denominators matter, and we can't throw them all aside because these are the things that are just ingrained in daily life.

You notice I didn't talk a single thing about macronutrients and how many carbs they had, other than the fact that maybe there's a little bit of reduced fat.

We didn't talk about protein.

We didn't talk about micronutrition.
