This is Q&A Tuesday and today’s question comes from Fara and she writes: “Hello all masterful Marie. My question is about disconnecting. As a successful businesswoman who is always on the go I’ve realized that I keep bringing my work attitude into the bedroom as well as the boardroom. How do you disconnect from work mode in order to go back to who you really are as a person? Note, I’m not one of those hippy woo woo types who loves to hang out by the ocean and listen to waves or sit under a tree on a mountaintop. I’ve tried it and although I have an open mind, it just hasn’t worked for me. But the tshirt I got was cool. Thank you Marie. Fara.” Oh my God, Fara, I think I have the same tshirt. Or is it this one? This is a great question. It’s something I most often hear from women but I also hear it from men too. Not the Yoni part, although some guys are looking for that. I’m talking about masculine and feminine energy and whether you’re a woman or a man, doesn't matter your sexual orientation, all of us need to know how to shift between these two energies if we want to experience maximum happiness and satisfaction. I do have to say, the reason I was so excited about answering this question is because I get you, Fara. I too have to make a really conscious effort to shift out of work mode. Now, I’ve talked to a lot of experts about this over the years and the most typical advice I always hear about shifting into my feminine sounds a little something like this: take a moment and light a candle. Then take a bubble bath, girl. Luxuriate your body in some soft, luscious rose petals. Go in your bedroom, take it all off, and just dance naked to Sade. Can I be honest with you? That stuff makes me want to hurl. I am not going into my bedroom and rubbing silk on my hoo ha. You know, that stuff may work for thousands of women and I would never invalidate what works for them, it just doesn't work for me. Different strokes for different folks and that’s totally cool. Now, I am not claiming to be the feminine energy expert, but since you asked I’m very happy to share two simple strategies that do work for me. Strategy number one, turn it off. Or, a more sensual way to put that, inspiration courtesy of the great Marvin Gaye. Sounds simple and it is. So once you’re done with your work day you’ve gotta turn everything off. So turn the cell phone off, put it on airplane mode, you’ve gotta close down the laptop. Doesn't matter whether you’re with your significant other or you’re entertaining friends, just turn everything off and make it a point to have real live conversations with real live human beings or yourself or your pet. The bottom line is, if you wanna shift out of work mode then you need to turn everything off like those electronic devices that keep you tethered to it. Strategy number two is called butter on toast. This may sound a little corny, and it is, but it works. So Josh and I have this saying called butter on toast. When it’s time for me to shift out of work mode, I think of myself as butter and he’s the toast. So think about this, this comfort food is best when the toast is, like, firm and stiff and when the butter is soft and velvety and creamy and spreads all over the place. So I know that’s a little dumb, but it actually works. It’s a really easy metaphor to remember and it affects my physicality, it affects my voice, and I can slip into it really fast. While I’m sure our audience will give you loads of other suggestions, these two strategies are simple and they work for me every single time. So let’s wrap this up on a tweetable, shall we? “If any human being is to reach full maturity, both the masculine and feminine sides of the personality must be brought up into consciousness.” That was my A to your Q, Fara, I hope it helps. Now I would love to hear from you. Do you ever have trouble shifting out of work mode?
