  • Quite simply, Monopoly is the world's greatest family board game.

  • But many people find it too slow, too boring and too confusing.

  • So here are our 5 tips to help you enjoy Monopoly more

  • Here are 4 questions:

  • If you actually land on Go! do you get $400 instead of 200?

  • Do you have to go round the board once before you can buy properties?

  • In jail, are you forbidden from collecting rent?

  • If you land on free parking do you get any money?

  • The answer to all 4 questions is no!

  • These house rules may seem like fun but they actually make the game take a lot longer.

  • The free parking rule is the worst.

  • This player is on the verge of bankruptcy.

  • They have no way out of trouble and then this happens.

  • Not enough money to get them back in the game, just enough to add another 15 minutes to its

  • length!

  • Strangely, some people are afraid of auctioning.

  • They prefer just to leave the property unsold if they don't want to buy it.

  • Auctioning is fun and it moves the game along.

  • So, if someone lands on a property and they don't want to auction it, next time just say,

  • "I'll pay $10!"

  • I guarantee you, that will get the bidding started.

  • Mortgaging is an essential part of the game.

  • If you need more money, just flip your property over and take half of its value from the bank.

  • And then when you want to unmortgage it, pay the money back to the bank, plus 10 percent.

  • What an ideal opportunity to introduce your children to the joy of percentages!

  • Especially when there are a lot of players, it can sometimes be difficult to acquire a

  • complete property set without trading.

  • So, do some deals.

  • Pick another player, exchange some properties, throw in some cash if necessary to incentivize

  • them and soon you'll both be building houses and the game will be speeding up.

  • All debts must be paid in full, immediately -- no exceptions, not even for temper tantrums.

  • Take this situation.

  • The only way for me to pay what I owe is to sell some houses -- the last thing I want

  • to do.

  • But this is the game working -- I am being driven one step closer to bankruptcy.

  • And if someone does lose their cool, what a great chance for you to talk to your kids

  • about the value of sportsmanship and of never losing your dignity.

  • And finally -- that age old Monopoly question: how does the game end?

  • It's simple.

  • If I can't afford to pay what I owe, and I've tried everything -- sold back all my houses,

  • mortgaged all my properties -- I'm bankrupt, and I'm out of the game.

  • One by one every player becomes bankrupt, until the last person left standing is the

  • winner!
