Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hello everyone, this is Andrew at Crown Academy of English. Today we are doing a lesson... a listening lesson and the subject is "Danger in prison". So let's start! So the plan for the lesson is.. we are going to start with some vocabulary. I will define two words for you which are important. And then I will give you the questions that I would like you to answer so that you can see them before the listening. And then you will listen to the article and the subject is of course "Danger in prison." And then finally, I will give you the answers to those questions and you will also listen to the article one last time and I will give you the transcript on the screen. Alright? So let's start with the vocabulary. The first word is "assault". Now this means an attack on somebody. Ok? So here, for example, we could say that Mark is angry with John and he's going to ASSAULT him. Alright so it's an attack. Often an attack in the street, for example. Okay So this is assault. So it is either a noun or a verb. Here we are using it as a verb. Ok, so that is the first word. And the second word (or words) is "shadow minister" Now this is a political expression and it means a Minister from the opposition party in Parliament. So it is a person. It is a person. A member of Parliament. And the opposition party is the party which is NOT in power. So it is the party which is opposed to the government. And currently, in the British Parliament, the opposition party is the Labour Party. So the Labour Party is opposed to the current government. So let's have an example. Now this is a photograph of the British Parliament in London. So we could say that the Education Minister in the Labour party is Mary Creagh. She is the SHADOW education minister. Alright? She is the shadow education minister. Now let's look at the questions. Question one: How many assaults were there in London prisons in 2007? Question two: Who is Mister Khan? Question three: Why does Mister Khan believe the problem is even bigger? Question four: Why doesn't Frances Crook agree with the government's explanation? And the last question, question five: Is this statement true or false? "There were less prison officers in 2012 compared to 2010?" So I want you... the question is: Is this sentence, this statement.... is that true or is it false? Ok, so those are the five questions that I would like you to answer. Now I am going to play you the article. So you are now going to listen to the article. So get ready. I'm going to play it for you..... NOW! Okay, so that is the end of the article. Alright? If you need more time to answer the questions, if you would like to listen again, then simply click here on the screen and you will go back and listen a second time. Or, if you have finished, if you do not need any more time, then simply just wait 10 seconds and I will show you the answers. Okay? Ok so we will now carry on and I will show you the answers. So question one. I asked you how many assaults were there in London prisons in 2007? Well the answer is: One thousand four hundred and sixty three. Question two: Who is Mister Khan? Well, he is the Shadow Justice Minister. Question three: Why does Mister Khan believe the problem is even bigger? Because some of the assaults are never reported. Question four: Why doesn't Frances Crook agree with the government's explanation? Because the number of prisoners only grew by six percent. Alright, so if you remember in the article, the government's explanation was that the number of prisoners has increased. But Frances Crook does not agree because she thinks that the increase was very small. It was only six percent. And question five: "There were less prison officers in 2012 compared to 2010." Is that true or false? And it's true because there were three thousand and fifty seven in 2012 compared to three thousand two hundred and fifty in 2010. Okay, so that is a decrease. There are less. So it is true. Right so I am now going to play you the article one last time with the transcript on the screen so that you can read it at the same time. So are you ready? I'm going to play it..... NOW! So that is the end of the article. I hope that helped seeing it on the screen with the transcript. I hope that helped you follow... follow it. Alright? So that is the end of the lesson.
