CHILDREN GIGGLE
KIDS: Let's Go Biking!
SYDNEI: Bicycling Basics
TY: Now that you're ready to ride,
TY: it's time for you to learn
TY: the Bicycling Basics.
SYDNEI: If you know the basic actions and behaviors,
SYDNEI: it will make you a better and safer rider.
TY: That way
TY: you can go out and have fun
TY: and get the other benefits of riding a bicycle.
SEAN: Hey Dad, this is fun.
DREW: I wish we could do this every day.
NOELIA: Thanks for coming along.
CYRANI: How did we do?
GRANDMA: You guys did great.
SYDNEi: Riding a bike is a great way
SYDNEI: to learn how to move in traffic
SYDNEI: so you'll be ready when you learn to drive a car.
TY: So let's get started with
TY: the first Bicycling Basic:
TY: Hand Signals.
SYDNEI: When you are bicycling,
SYDNEI: you use hand signals
SYDNEI: to let other drivers
SYDNEI: know what your next move is,
SYDNEI: just like turn signals
SYDNEI: and brake lights on cars do.
SYDNEI: You should use a hand signal
SYDNEI: any time you are about to
SYDNEI: move left, move right, turn, or stop.
SYDNEI: Let's see what those hand signals should look like.
TY: Before you make a left turn,
TY: take a quick look back for traffic
TY: and put your left arm out straight.
SYDNEI: Before you make a right turn,
SYDNEI: put your left arm out
SYDNEI: with your hand up at a 90-degree angle.
TY: Before you slow down or stop,
TY: put your left arm out
TY: with your hand down.
SYDNEI: You should also use these hand signals
SYDNEI: when moving to avoid an obstacle
SYDNEI: to let others know that you are going to
SYDNEI:change your line of travel.
TY: Do you know all of the hand signals?
KIDS: Yes!
BRANDON: Left turn!
CYRANI: Right turn!
SEAN: Stop!
SYDNEI: Let's practice.
SYDNEI: See if you can give
SYDNEI: the correct signals
SYDNEI: for the following situations.
SYDNEI: Here's the first one.
SEAN: Let's see,
SEAN: I need to make a right turn at this street.
SEAN: I put my left arm out
SEAN: with my hand up at a 90-degree angle
SEAN: before I make a right turn.
TY: Good. Let's try another one.
DREW: There's something blocking the road.
DREW: I'm going to have to move to the left to miss it.
DREW: I take a quick look back for traffic
DREW: and then put my left arm out straight
DREW: before I shift to the left.
SYDNEI: I think you're getting the hang of this.
SYDNEI: What about this one?
ELLIE: Looks like I've got to stop up ahead.
ELLIE: I put my left arm out with my hand down
ELLIE: before I slow down and stop.
TY: Great. Okay, last one!
BRANDON: There's the entrance to the greenway on the left.
BRANDON: I need to make a left turn.
BRANDON: I take a quick look back for traffic
BRANDON: and then put my left arm out straight
BRANDON: before I turn left into the greenway.
SYDNEI: Great job on those hand signals.
SYDNEI: The next Bicycling Basic
SYDNEI: is to Avoid Risky Behaviors.
TY: There are a lot of things that we do
TY: that may seem like a good idea at the time
TY: but can end up in getting us into serious trouble.
TY: When you know what can go wrong,
TY: you can Avoid Risky Behaviors
TY: and you're more likely to keep
TY: bad things from happening to you.
TY: Let's take a look
TY: at some of the risky behaviors
TY: you should NOT do.
SYDNEI: Do not carry things in your hand,
SYDNEI: or loop them over the handlebars.
SYDNEI: That makes it hard to control your bike
SYDNEI: and to use hand signals.
SYDNEI: So where should you carry things?
CYRANI: I carry things in my backpack or basket.
CYRANI: That works a lot better!
TY: It might look like fun to ride double,
TY: but it changes the way a bicycle handles,
TY: puts weight where it doesn't belong,
TY: and makes it harder to steer
TY: and use the brakes.
TY: What should you do if you have 2 people and one bike?
BRANDON: We should both walk and push the bike.
BRANDON: I think we just avoided a big disaster!
SYDNEI: Here's a risky behavior
SYDNEI: you should already know
SYDNEI: from the Rules of the Road.
SYDNEI: Do not ride against traffic.
SYDNEI: It's very risky to ride against traffic
SYDNEI: because drivers do not expect
SYDNEI: to have traffic coming at them on their right.
SYDNEI: If you ride against traffic,
SYDNEI: you risk getting into a crash
SYDNEI: with another vehicle
SYDNEI: when the driver doesn't realize you're there
SYDNEI: and turns into you or crosses your path..
SYDNEI: So where should you
SYDNEI: ride your bike on the road?
ELLIE: I always ride with traffic
ELLIE: when bicycling on the road.
ELLIE: It's much safer to ride with traffic!
TY: Never ignore a traffic light
TY: or stop sign.
TY: Many crashes between cars and bikes happen
TY: because the bicyclist didn't stop.
TY: Car drivers can lose respect for bicyclists
TY: when some of them don't follow the
TY: Rules of the Road.
TY: What should you do
TY: when you see traffic light or stop sign?
SEAN: I always stop at stop signs
SEAN: and red traffic lights.
SEAN: It just makes sense!
SYDNEI: Avoid riding at night.
SYDNEI: Riding a bicycle at night
SYDNEI: can be dangerous
SYDNEI: even with the proper headlights
SYDNEI: and taillights.
SYDNEI: It is very difficult for drivers
SYDNEI: to see bicyclists at night.
SYDNEI: What should you do if it gets dark?
NOELIA: At night I call for a ride,
NOELIA: or walk my bicycle home.
NOELIA: Better safe than sorry!
TY: Don't ride in the rain if you don't have to!
TY: Riding in the rain can be risky,
TY: so you if do ride in the rain,
TY: you need to be extra careful.
TY: Rain can make the road slippery
TY: and make it harder for you to turn and stop.
TY: What should you do if it starts to rain?
BRANDON: I ride slowly.
BRANDON: When stopping, I start slowing down
BRANDON: earlier to give myself extra time
BRANDON: to come to a full stop.
BRANDON: If it's not safe to ride,
BRANDON: I walk with my bike
BRANDON: or find a place to wait
BRANDON: until it stops raining.
BRANDON: Wet means wait!
SYDNEI: Now you know the
SYDNEI: Risky Behaviors you should avoid.
SYDNEI: But even if you do everything right,
SYDNEI: something can still happen
SYDNEI: that you're not expecting.
TY: How you look for
TY: and react to these unexpected hazards
TY: can make all the difference between
TY: being safe and getting into trouble.
SYDNEI: To help you Stay Out of Trouble while bicycling
SYDNEI: follow these three simple steps:
KIDS: Scan for danger!
KIDS: Plan your move!
KIDS: Do It!
SYDNEI: Let's look at each step
SYDNEI: to see you what you should do.
KIDS: Scan For Danger!
TY: When you're riding,
TY: you should always be looking ahead
TY: for any possible danger.
TY: Is there something blocking your view?
TY: Is there a danger on or near the road?
TY: Are there railroad tracks ahead?
TY: When you see something,
TY: you decide if it is a hazard or problem.
KIDS: Plan Your Move!
SYDNEI: Next, you plan what you are going to do
SYDNEI: to avoid the hazard.
KIDS: Do It!
TY: Then you do what you planned.
SYDNEI: Three simple steps to remember.
SYDNEI: So what are some of the hazards or problems
SYDNEI: you might see when you're riding?
SYDNEI: Let's take a look.
TY: You may find that something is
TY: blocking your view as you ride,
TY: try to make a turn
TY: or enter the road.
TY: Bushes, trees, parked cars or other obstacles
TY: can sometimes block the view for a bicyclist.
SYDNEI: You also need to look ahead at the road
SYDNEI: for hazards that may be there.
SYDNEI: Potholes, fallen branches, broken glass,
SYDNEI: and even sand or leaves in the road
SYDNEI: can cause you to fall,
SYDNEI: damage your bicycle's wheel,
SYDNEI: or give you a flat tire.
TY: You should also scan
TY: the sides of the road
TY: for animals, cars and pedestrians
TY: that may unexpectedly enter the street
TY: in front of you.
SYDNEI: Bicyclists need to be very careful
SYDNEI: when crossing railroad tracks.
SYDNEI: Railroad crossing signs alert you
SYDNEI: that the road crosses railroad tracks.
SYDNEI: You should always watch and listen for a train
SYDNEI: and when you cross the tracks,
SYDNEI: you should always cross
SYDNEI: with your wheels at a
SYDNEI: right angle to the tracks.
SYDNEI: If you don't,
SYDNEI: your wheels might slip on the rail
SYDNEI: or get caught in the space
SYDNEI: between the rail and the pavement.
SYDNEI: Some crossings have gates
SYDNEI: or flashing red lights.
SYDNEI: Never go around a lowered gate
SYDNEI: and always stop for an approaching train.
TRAIN WHISTLE
TY: Now it's your turn to figure out
TY: what you would do in these situations.
TY: See if you can Stay Out of Trouble
TY: like the bicyclist.
NOELIA: These tall bushes make it
NOELIA: hard for me to see around the corner.
NOELIA: That could be a problem.
NOELIA: What should I do?
NOELIA: I'm going to move forward
NOELIA: until I can see around the corner.
NOELIA: I go when I can see clearly
NOELIA: that no traffic is coming.
NOELIA: All clear!
NOELIA: That's how I Stay Out of Trouble!
SYDNEI: What would you do in this situation?
BRANDON: Is that something on the road down there?
BRANDON: It looks like broken glass.
BRANDON: That could cause a crash or cut my tires.
BRANDON: What should I do?
BRANDON: I'm going to check for traffic
BRANDON: then signal and move to the left
BRANDON: to avoid the broken glass.
BRANDON: That's how I Stay Out of Trouble!
TY: What you would do in this situation?
DREW: That dog over there is loose.
DREW: It might run out and chase me.
DREW: What should I do?
DREW: If the dog runs out, I'll yell at it.
DREW: If it chases me, I'll keep my bike
DREW: between me and the dog.
DREW: Okay, he didn't run out.
DREW: I can keep going.
DREW: That's how I Stay Out of Trouble!
SYDNEI: What would you do here?
SEAN: Hey, there's a railroad crossing sign
SEAN: and there are the train tracks.
SEAN: I need to be careful
SEAN: because there could be a train coming.
SEAN: What should I do?
SEAN: I'm going to approach slowly
SEAN: as I look and listen for a train
SEAN: and cross the tracks at a right angle.
SEAN: That's how I Stay Out of Trouble!
TY: Great Job!
TY: Now, the last Bicycling Basic
TY: is to learn how to
TY: Safely React to Others.
SYDNEI: When you're riding your bike
SYDNEI: you should anticipate
SYDNEI: what other people on the road
SYDNEI: are going to do.
SYDNEI: Drivers and other bicyclists using the road
SYDNEI: will use signals to let you know
SYDNEI: what they are about to do.
SYDNEI: You need to understand
SYDNEI: what these signals mean,
SYDNEI: so you can Safely React to Others.
TY: Let's take a look at some of the signals
TY: other vehicles may give you
TY: and safe ways to react to them.
SYDNEI: This is a right turn signal.
SYDNEI: When you see a right turn signal,
SYDNEI: you can anticipate that a driver is
SYDNEI: about to make a right turn.
SYDNEI: How should you react?
SYDNEI: When you see a right turn signal,
SYDNEI: you should stay well behind
SYDNEI: or to the left of a vehicle
SYDNEI: that is turning right.
SYDNEI: Do not pass on the right.
SYDNEI: Do not ride in a driver's blind spot.
TY: This is a left turn signal.
TY: When you see a left turn signal
TY: on a vehicle in front of you,
TY: you can anticipate that a driver is
TY: about to make a left turn.
TY: How should you react?
TY: When you see a left turn signal
TY: on a vehicle in front of you,
TY: you should stay well behind or
TY: to the right of a vehicle
TY: that is turning left.
TY: Do not pass on the left.
TY: Do not ride in a driver's blind spot.
SYDNEI: What if you see a left turn signal
SYDNEI: on a vehicle that is approaching you?
SYDNEI: How should you react?
SYDNEI: If you see a left turn signal
SYDNEI: on a vehicle that is approaching you,
SYDNEI: make sure that you are visible
SYDNEI: to the car turning left
SYDNEI: by staying well behind any cars
SYDNEI: in front of you.
SYDNEI: If you're close behind other vehicles,
SYDNEI: it makes you hard to see.
SYDNEI: Even if you have the right of way,
SYDNEI: slow down and be prepared to stop
SYDNEI: if the car starts to turn left
SYDNEI: in front of you.
TY: These are brake lights.
TY: If you see bright red lights
TY: on the back of a vehicle,
TY: that means it is slowing down
TY: and possibly stopping.
TY: How should you react?
TY: You should react to brake lights
TY: by slowing down.
TY: Keep a safe stopping distance
TY: between you and the car.
TY: Never follow a car closely.
SYDNEI: White lights on the back of a vehicle
SYDNEI: means it is getting ready to
SYDNEI: or is backing up.
SYDNEI: How should you react?
SYDNEI: Cars backing out of driveways
SYDNEI: can be a serious hazard to you
SYDNEI: when you're riding because
SYDNEI: it is hard for the motorists to see you.
SYDNEI: Always be on the lookout
SYDNEI: when you pass driveways and parked cars,
SYDNEI: and be ready to stop for a car
SYDNEI: that is backing up into the roadway.
SYDNEI: Be extra careful
SYDNEI: if you must ride on the sidewalk,
SYDNEI: because drivers are not looking
SYDNEI: for bicyclists there
SYDNEI: when they back out of driveways.
TY: A person sitting in a car
TY: parked on the road
TY: could be getting ready to open their door
TY: or could be getting ready
TY: to pull out onto the road.
TY: How should you react?
TY: When you see a person sitting in a car
TY: parked on the road,
TY: slow down and keep an eye on the person.
TY: Put enough room between you and the car
TY: to make sure that the car door
TY: doesn't open into you.
TY: Do not ride close to the side of the car.
SYDNEI: That wraps up the Bicycling Basics.
SYDNEI: Now it's time for you go outside
SYDNEI: and use what you've learned in the classroom.
TY: You need to practice all
TY: of the Bicycling Basic skills:
SYDNEI: Use Hand Signals,
TY: Avoid Risky Behaviors,
SYDNEI: Look for Potential Hazards,
TY: Stay Out of Trouble,
SYDNEI: and Safely React to Others.
TY: So Let' Go Biking...
SYDNEI & TY: ...so you can get where you want to go.
SEAN: Hey Dad, it's right there.
BRANDON: Wow, that's awesome!
DREW: Cool!
NOELIA: This is going to be great.
CYRANI: Hey Grandma you're going to love this!
ELLIE: I want to take a picture!
SYDNEI: Looks like we all like to ride our bikes to get places.
TY: Glad we all made it here safely.
ELLIE: Me too!
NOELIA: It was fun riding our bikes.
SEAN: We should ride our bikes here more often.
BRANDON: Did you know there's a dinosaur inside?
DREW: I wonder if he rode a bike to get here.
