BRANDON: Crossing Streets Safely SYDNEI: Okay, smart pedestrians, SYDNEI: tell me why you might need SYDNEI: to walk across a street? BRANDON: To get to my bus stop. SOPHIA: To go play at the park. SEAN: To go see my friends. TY: It may be okay for you to cross the street TY: on a quiet street in your neighborhood, TY: but what should you do at a busy street? CYRANI: Do not cross a busy street by myself! CYRANI: Cross with an adult! CYRANI: And stay together! SYDNEI: Correct! SYDNEI: But do you know how to be a smart pedestrian SYDNEI: when you're crossing the street on your own? KIDS: Yes! TY: Okay, let's see. TY: What are the 6 steps you need to remember TY: to cross the street safely? DREW: Find a safe place to cross! SOPHIA: Stop at the edge! SEAN: Look and listen for traffic! DREW: Find a safe place to cross! SYDNEI: How do you find a safe place SYDNEI: to cross the street? DREW: I look for a place where I can see DREW: clearly in both directions. DREW: Parked cars, bushes, trees, fences, DREW: a curve in the road, or a hill DREW: can block me from seeing cars DREW: and keep cars from seeing me. DREW: I do not cross where my view is blocked. DREW: I look for a safer place to cross. DREW: When I find a place where I can see cars DREW: and cars can see me I am ready to cross the street. TY: Good! SOPHIA: Stop at the edge! TY: The next step is to Stop at the Edge. TY: Why do you always stop at the edge of the road? SOPHIA: I stop at the edge where SOPHIA: I can look both ways for traffic. SYDNEI: What do you do if you need to cross SYDNEI: near parked cars? SOPHIA: I stop twice. SOPHIA: First I stop at the edge of the road, SOPHIA: to make sure the parked cars aren't SOPHIA: getting ready to go. SOPHIA: Then I stop at the edge of the cars SOPHIA: so I can see traffic and traffic can see me. SEAN: Look and listen for traffic! TY: Okay, you've stopped at the edge. TY: Do you know the right way TY: to look and listen for traffic? KIDS: Look Left! KIDS: Look Right! KIDS: Look Left Again! SEAN: I look left first SEAN: because that's where the traffic is closest to me. SEAN: I look right next to see if any traffic SEAN: is coming on the other side of the road. SEAN: I look left again to make sure it's still safe SEAN: because cars move quickly. SEAN: And I don't forget to listen for traffic! SEAN: If I hear a car engine... SOUND OF CAR ENGINE SEAN: or a siren... SOUND OF SIREN SEAN: or a horn... SOUND OF CAR HORN SEAN: I stop and look again. SEAN: If I don't see or hear any traffic SEAN: and check left, right, left SEAN: to make sure it's clear, SEAN: then it's safe for me to start crossing. KATE: Cross quickly and safely! SYDNEI: How do you cross the street quickly and safely? KATE: I look and listen for traffic as I cross. KATE: I walk straight across. KATE: I walk quickly, but do not run. BRANDON: Be extra cautious in bad weather BRANDON: or when it's dark! TY: What should you do to be extra cautious TY: in bad weather or when it's dark? BRANDON: I wear bright colors and reflective material BRANDON: so drivers can see me. BRANDON: I wait for cars to pass because they BRANDON: can take longer to stop on slippery streets. SYDNEI: Okay, last one! NOELIA: Be a role model! SYDNEI: What can you do to be a good role model SYDNEI: for younger kids? NOELIA: I always cross the street safely myself.
