- Hey, welcome back to "What's Inside?",
I'm Dan, and I'm here with my buddy Yoda.
I'm here at Lucas Films, here in San Francisco, California,
it's a beautiful campus. Inside there I was able to meet
a bunch of people like Darth Vader,
and some other characters. But, they won't let me
take my video camera in there, so,
this is all we get, is the fountain, with Yoda.
The force is strong with him, let's see if we can
find something cool to cut open that is Star Wars related.
We have BB-8 from the Star Wars film that's coming out
by Disney soon, The Force Awakens.
I'm really excited to see a new Star Wars, it's been years.
I've seen DIsney's presentation of BB-8 when he rolled out
on stage, and how it works, and it was fascinating.
This is going to be fun to take this apart,
play with it a little bit, see how it works.
And then let's dissect it, cut it open
and see how it works inside.
This is made by the Sphero company, S-P-H-E-R-O,
they make a lot of these rolling toys,
and things you can do outdoors and indoors,
and so it was a good match for Disney
when they wanted to have a real robot in their film,
rather than just a computer-animated robot.
Why don't you put the head on it.
- Whoa, it's totally a magnet!
- [Dan] Here it is up close, hey buddy! Look over here!
Yeah, there you go! I'm right here. You're just waking up,
getting charged. Looking around at the world around him.
Came alive. Oh, what? Wouldn't you like that?
Oh, that's linking. - It's connecting!
(mystical chiming music)
(whirrs)
- Whoa! - That totally scared me!
(laughs)
Look at him cruising. Whee!
- [Dan] Oh! (laughs)
- One cool thing about this, is that you can record
something, and it looks like it transfers from its eye.
- [Dans voice coming from BB-8] You need to cut me open.
We need to be on "What's Inside?"
- Can we cut you open, 'cause that would be amazing.
Transmitting message to BB-8. Pretty cool.
- [Son's voice coming from BB-8] Can we cut you
open, 'cause that would be amazing.
(bangs)
- [BB-8] Uh, oh!
(laughs)
- [Dan] We had an hour to play with this guy.
- He's so much fun, though. Just
driving him around the house. It's awesome.
- [Dan] What do we gotta do now?
- (sounds like kiss) - [Dan] Kiss him?
(laughs) - [Dan] Ok, give him a kiss!
- Cut him in half, that's what I meant to say, not kiss him.
(low key electronic music)
- We're gonna see if you can drive.
(whirrs)
(laughs)
- Oh! I just pulled that out, whatever that is.
- Look at these wheels.
- Oh yeah, there's little wheels on it.
(laughs) Whee!
Ok, you can take a look, there's that part of his body,
here's the light, that's the tracking light
that goes around, and then you can see his
wheels are turning right now, he's trying to go,
but look how interesting that is.
So one thing we wanted to try is the whole hologram
message thing, click it, try to do a message to him.
So check it out, there's the hologram, it's still sending
because it won't stop, but it will still do the hologram.
Those lights turn on, and then you can
see it broadcasting out of there.
Here's what was on the top, with all the different chips.
Here's the top part that was on it, you can see
the two magnets at the top that keep the head on,
and then the upper wheels that spin, that keep it working,
that was sitting right in between there going up to the top,
and then as soon as we took off the, cut it open,
this fell right out, so those are the two magnets
that keep the head on. Here's the top
part of the body, there's your two magnets that
are in there, hanging down in the little case,
and the wheels, and then the motor, and the coils
that get these wheels turning.
A couple of the toys that I'm seeing that I think
are going to be really good for Christmas,
BB-8 because of Star Wars, because it's just so much fun,
mini Segways, those are a blast, too.
I don't know, between those two different items,
I think those are going to be some of the hottest
items for Christmas, for those that have the money
to afford those items. 'Cause they're expensive,
this is anywhere from $130-180,
the hoverboard's anywhere from $200-800.
