Taiwan's first-ever female president Tsai Ing-wen took office on Friday after winning
the national election back in January. It marks just the third leadership-change
in Taiwan's history. The 59-year-old received a legal education
in Taiwan, the U.S., and the U.K, and then worked as a law-professor in her home-country
before joining the Democratic Progressive Party in 2004.
President Tsai and the ruling DPP face daunting challenges ahead.
They are tasked with fixing the underperforming domestic economy and uneven income distribution,
and fostering a positive diplomatic relationship with China.
