The H2Hybrid Fuel Cell Automotive Trainer is the ultimate tool for exploring science
and engineering concepts through hands-on activities with a working fuel cell car.
An impressive array of hardware, software, and digital curricular materials allow for hours
of activities for students from high school vocational-technical up through
college-level engineering.
Everything you need to get started is included right out of the box. The centerpiece of the
H2Hybrid Fuel Cell Automotive Trainer is the hybrid hydrogen fuel cell- and battery-powered
RC car, featuring: onboard sensors, hybrid power management modules, and an advanced
data logging system for the fuel cell, battery, and motor. This system collects data on voltage
and current, displaying them via the onboard LCD screen which shows real-time graphs of
output data from the fuel cell, battery, and motor.
Additionally, each H2Hybrid Fuel Cell Automotive Trainer includes a custom-made testing bench
that can gather data while the car is standing still, four metal hydride fuel cartridges,
battery, and battery charger. Optional add-ons include an electrolyzer to easily refill your
metal hydride fuel cartridges.
The car itself comes preassembled and is ready to drive immediately. To use the car with
the testing bench is easy too. Start by simply connecting the testing bench wiring to the
car. Then turn on the car, fuel cell, and board. Now you’re ready to gather data in
real time. Connect the car to any computer and the testing bench can utilize the included
labVIEW software to monitor speed, current, battery voltage, and more. Uniquely, the testing
bench allows you to measure braking force, through a combination of data from the bench
servos and the remote control.
Even when not on the testing bench, the onboard sensors can gather data while the car is running
anywhere. While being displayed on the onboard LCD screen in real time, the sensor data can
also be downloaded to an SD card and imported to a computer to be analyzed in spreadsheet
programs such as Excel. To run experiments virtually, software models of the car are
included for 3D CAD, OpenModelica, MATLAB, and more.
The included Hydrostik metal hydride cartridges safely store up to 10 liters of hydrogen apiece
and are recharged easily with the optional Hydrofill station.
The Hydrofill station, sold separately, provides hydrogen cleanly, by electrolyzing distilled water.
Want even more activities? Then consider including optional add-ons such as accelerometers and
the measurement box, which allow for many more possibilities for experimentation.
The included curricular materials guide students through hours of experiments on everything
from measuring the car’s velocity and acceleration, to assessing the flow of energy in the electrical
system, to designing more efficient parts and processes.
Simple experiments involve monitoring the output of the fuel cell or measuring the forces
at work as the car runs. More advanced experiments develop better ways of utilizing the hybrid
power sources or improving the car’s efficiency. Students from high school vocational/technical
or physics classes to college-level engineering courses will find hours of content to meet
their needs. Concepts covered in these activities include Newtonian mechanics, gear ratios,
radio circuitry, sustainable engineering, and much much more!
With more than a semester’s worth of content in one product, the H2Hybrid Fuel Cell Automotive
Trainer is the perfect addition to your class or lab. For more information on this and other
