and today we are going to talk about

some of the differences between ANIME and REALITY.

Lots of people seem to assume that

everything they see in anime is

exactly how it is in Japan.

Right!

This is a good idea to talk about

what's actually accurate.

I think literally the most common question I get

about anime or the most common comment

is when I say that in Japan, you should be

polite and quiet...

they'll be like

"What's anime?!"

Yeah.

This is always like the crazy-like characters.

That's just a story.

That's not how people act

in real life.

So, actually there are a couple of things that are realistic.

So... One of the things that I was super surprised by

when I first came to Japan was...

I was like: "This looks like a manga!"

I guess I never realized that.

Yeah. The scenes are really realistic,

like the background that always look like actual Japan.

Right. Like the school scenes...

Yeah, how they draw it.

They just take it directly from how Japan looks.

I mean some manga and anime they actually

really go to the place and take pictures and then trace it.

Ooh!

Like there's a Clannad City, you know?

It's like all the same.

Also, Evangelion is in...

Hi Shine!

Evangelion is in...

Was it Hakone?

There's a whole city like Evangelion.

So... there are multiple animes based off real cities.

Right.

You know how sometimes when some characters are sleeping....

They get like a "nose bubble".

That happened to me alot.

Japanese people actually get that.

Yeah, that's a real thing!

Whaatt?

Wait, you guys don't get them?

You guys have seen someone with a NOSBUBBLE?

You haven't seen it?

EWWWW! No.

Wait. You guys don't get it?

You must have so much snot in your nose....

It's mostly for babies.

Oh, I've seen a baby do it.

Yeah, yeah.

I always get that.

Really?

You get a SNOT BUBBLE?

Yeah, I always get snot bubbles.

Hahahaha

Yeah, that's totally a baby thing.

cause most adults will blow their nose before it gets to that stage.

Well, I mean. It always happens to me.

One time I was on the train....

Oh God.

And it happened and one lady was like :3

And I think I was like "Oh Sh*t!"

It's not like you need to do it.

It's like "shhhhp." ...

Oh my god...

I've never had that problem.

My nose is always stuffy. I always have something up it.

But yeah, that was the first time I ever saw it was on the train.

It was like an old dude.

He had a nose bubble.

I was like "THAT'S A THING?"

"THAT'S A REAL THING!"

Kay. So another thing that was kind of realistic...

It's a little exaggerated.

Hairstyles in anime...

Like, it gets spiky in weird ways.

And you're like "That's just how they do it in anime"

But, Japanese hair is very different.

Yeah, they kind of have really strange hairstyles that just stick in...

Like... Interesting positions.

Yeah, they have really like coarse hair.

You just looked at me when you said that.

Right, you're Japanese.

Show them your hair which is sticking in weird directions.

It's funny cause you were like "Japanese people have weird hair"

She just looked at me

And was like "What are you looking at? Oh!"

Yeah, cause people ask us all the time like "How does Jun do his hair?"

He doesn't do anything.

He just kind wakes up and...

He gets out of the shower and blow dries and whatever...

And that's it.

Cause they have awesome thick hair.

Yeah, Asians have thicker hair.

Japanese people usually don't have blue eyes like anime characters.

Or they don't have big eyes like anime characters.

It's extremely rare.

Right, right.

They don't dye they hair.

You know like anime characters everyone has like blue hair.

Oh yeah.

But, in schools you're not allowed to dye your hair.

You're in high school and...

Or wear makeup.

Right!

I think makeup is ok.

It depends on the high school, yeah.

Makeup is usually ok, I know that.

But dying your hair is a "no"

More taboo

Come on Shine, come on back.

So, school uniforms.

that you see in manga...

those are very realistic.

You'll see lots of different styles and different colors.

And there are different styles and colors. I think it's usually more private schools...

that have more outfit colors

yeah yeah

but normal schools are very plain, and it's all the same.

Yeah, dark blue.

Yeah Dark blue, it's the dark blue Mete. You know the black one that's all button up.

Oh right right. that's so CUTE!

It's so adorable.

Yeah, those are all super accurate.

And then there's like the girl's that'll wear the long skirts

Like the quieter, geekier girls

And then the popular girls will have the super short skirts

like that's accurate too

right right

They roll it up.

A lot of Japanese people wear masks, that's accurate too.

oh yeah!

Do masks show up a lot in anime?

Yeah, I think they do

a fair amount

especially for like the ''Yankee Girls'' or whatever

ahh, yeah yeah

that's true, yeah

A question people have asked us is:

Going up onto the roof of your highschool

Is that something you're allowed to do?

Oh yeah cause there's always like a scene in an anime where people are up on the roof.

Yeah that's accurate, like usually you go up onto the roof and eat a bento

Oh really?

You can?

I didn't know allowed up there.

I mean you're not allowed to but people sneak.

Bad kids...

And the way they show like after school clubs and stuff is also pretty accurate

yeah

I think people spend like a big chunk of their life in after school clubs

like out of school clubs

The food is accurate!

The food? Yeah

The food is like almost 100% accurate

pretty much if an anime have it, they'll have it here

Yeah yeah, I made a video about Taiyaki and everyone was commenting:

''Oh I saw that in an ANIME!!''

''IT EXISTS!''

But yeah, the food is like super accurate

Probably everything you see in an anime is exactly like how it is.

Right! Oh yeah

And like you see the anime characters all the time just like hold food in their mouth

without using their hands and you're like ''Aww that's so cute!''

Like I don't see that in America, but Jun does that ALL the time!

Does he really!?

Yeah!

Like when he'll be like eating something? With no hands?

No not just eating stuff but like he carries, he holds stuff in his mouth

I can't give you an example

Like when he's doing something else?

Yeah yeah!

Isn't that normal though?

...I don't do that

I do!

Very rarely, like if I have to open a door and I have like too much stuff

Maybe like a piece of paper or mail

then I'll hold while I unlock the door, but that's it pretty much

Really? Like when I was playing video games, I just put it in my mouth and play

I wouldn't do that, probably wouldn't do that

I do that with french fries too, put all the french fries in my mouth

if I could get the whole pack of french fries i'd put it in my mouth and just keep playing

What the hell!

No that's not normal!

What? I'm not normal!?

Especially in high school or whatever, there's so many scenes that are just in the classroom

but they're not having class, there's no teacher in there

Oh they're just like, chilling in there?

So how much time do you spend in classrooms without teachers?

Depends, like maybe like five minutes

Like before class?

Yeah five minutes, it seems like everyone gets that.

Like when I was in school, if a class ends you have ten minutes of getting ready for the next class

Maybe that ten minutes is an anime, but they make it into like 40 minutes

Yeah!

Yeah seriously, like whole anime's are always set in the classroom

Well after school like when everyone says like ''Goodbye!'' and to leave

you can do anything you want in the classroom

Wait wait! So, in real life you can stay in the classroom after the teacher leaves?

Yeah! But that's like after school, as in when you say ''Sayonara!''

I guess that makes sense because the students have to stay behind and clean up the school

here in Japan, right?

Yeah yeah there's like groups like "Monday I gotta clean this room, and next monday I have to clean a different room."

Right

like I don't think you can stay in classrooms after class in America, unless your teacher's there

I don't think anyone would want to!

Yeah! No!

That's the thing, like as soon as the bell goes, everyone leaves

But in Japan they're like waiting around for either cleaning or their club is gonna start.

One thing that I see a lot, people are always like in the hallway checking their test scores

Is that a thing?

Do they like list test scores so everybody can check them?

I don't think that's in high school though

like after high school you go to college and there's test scores!

I don't think they tell you the scores, more like what place they came in

That's SO stressful!

And you can see the names of everyone?

Yeah

Ah That sucks!

I don't think ALL schools do that though.
