Still never heard of 'em. - (FBE) What'd you think of their music? - Not for me, personally. Too, like, poppy. Like bubblegum pop. - They sounded like any other girl group. - There's not really much substance to it. I don't like the music necessarily, but I'll watch their singles for the music videos. - The first one, I liked. The second one was kind of unfortunate 'cause there's the whole thing where they used magic to make themselves super sexy and attractive. You don't have to be hot to be accepted. - All their stuff is very light-hearted and fun. And they're all incredibly talented women. - I love it. It's always so cute and fun. And a lot of it is pretty empowering. - Pop music tends to be frowned upon 'cause it's like, "Oh, it's not real music though." But it's like pop music is still that fun dancing music, and that's exactly what they make. It's that happy music that makes you feel good. - (FBE) What do you think has made Little Mix stand out amongst other girl groups to get this level of popularity? - Uh, well, I mean, they aren't ugly. (laughs) - They look really pretty. I'd like to look like some of them. - I think the ethnic diversity might be part of it because a lot of girl groups aren't. - They work really well together and I think it's cool 'cause they didn't start off together. They were put together. I really like the chemistry when they sing. - Their vocals are amazing and their style is great and it's just-- they have so much talent, and that's exactly what the fans see. - (FBE) So Little Mix was first formed on the UK version of The X Factor, where they won the competition. And another girl group, Fifth Harmony, were formed similarly on the American version of the show, just months after this happened. - Oh, really? - That's why they sounded so similar. - So they're like a girl version of One Direction. - (FBE) Why is the forming of groups in this way something that works? - I guess it's because it's taking multiple people that have talent already and putting them together. - You already have exposure from the show, and then you get four people together. That's four times the exposure. You start making music and it starts to be shared and it's just-- it's kind of perfect, you know? It's the perfect formula. - (FBE) So speaking of Fifth Harmony, there's a pretty heated rivalry on social media between the two fan bases of the groups, the Mixers and the Harmonizers, over who is better, even though the members of the actual bands seem to get along really well. - I think it's dumb. Why can't we just appreciate them both? - I think I kind of did that at one point too just because I was liking Little Mix, and then Fifth Harmony came out and I was like, "No! But they're not gonna get that big." And then Fifth Harmony got SO big that a lot of the Mixers were sort of like, "Wait, what the heck?" - (FBE) Why do you think that fandoms end up at odds with each other like this? - Probably because they think their fandom is better than everyone else's fandom. - It's just kind of like a petty rivalry. It's fun when you're part of it. - It's just like sports, where people get so invested into these groups of people and they feel like they've become part of them. - It's like the mentality that if they don't stay on top, then they might fall and break up and you don't ever want that happening, so you just try your best to make sure nobody can interfere. - It's always a competition of who's better, but I don't feel like the artists really go into that because they just respect each other's craft. - In the end, it just comes down to both of these girl groups are just really good, and music, in general, is just really good. And I feel like it's that sort of support to both that needs to happen. - (FBE) Little Mix often speaks in their music and out in public about female empowerment and the issue of body shaming as one of their members, Jessie, has been criticized online and in the media for her size. - I love Jessie. She is so amazing and she always looks so good all the time. I don't know what people are talking about. - (FBE) She's been vocal in encouraging people to stand up and be proud of what they look like. What do you think about this? - I think that's really good. - What does her appearance even have to do with anything? Just let her sing her music. - That's great. We need a lot more of that. I've been called fat and told that I don't have an ideal body for this or that. - Everyone is so much harder on women. There are so many women who want to make that change, and they want to speak out against it, but you can only do so much. - What you are and what you look like should matter to one person, and one person only, and that person's you. You should never, ever change yourself based on what somebody else wants to see out of you. ♪ (guitar riff) ♪ - (FBE) So, finally, Little Mix is planning on releasing their fourth album sometime later this year and they've said that it's another step from anything they've ever done before.
