I wanted my kid to be a thinking kid, okay?

I wanted my kid to be creative

我想我的孩子變得有創造力

so I have to ask the question "What is creativity?"

因此我要問"什麼是創造力"

If I don't know, I can't make my kid creative

如果我不知道 我就不能令我的孩子有創造力

so here's how I did it.

因此 我是這麼做的

In the beginning, he came to me when he was four years old

一開始 他在四歲的時候到我這裡

and he said "Daddy, the wheel came off my toy car."

他說:"爸爸 我的玩具車輪子掉了"

I said "So it did," then I threw it in the garbage

我說:"那就算了" 然後我把它拋進垃圾箱

and read my book

然後我就看書去了

and I'm watching him

之後我發現他

that lower lip, pouting

悶悶不樂的樣子

and I said "What's the matter?" He said "You threw it away!"

我說:"什麼事啦?" 他說:"因為你扔了它!"

I said "I'll get you baby toys where the wheels don't come off."

我說:"我會再買一個輪子不會掉的玩具給你"

He says "Well, maybe I can fix it."

他說:"可是 也許我可以修好它"

I reached for the toy and gave it to him.

我把那個玩具拾回來再交給他

He's sitting on the couch trying to get the wheel on

他就坐在椅子上試著把輪子裝上去

then he gets it on

過一會就完成了

in just a few minutes.

只用了幾分鐘而已

Then I picked him up and put him on my lap

之後我抱起他讓他坐在我腿上

and said "That's wonderful! How did you do that?"

我說:"很好 你是如何做到的?"

He said "I'm not that little!"

他說:"我已經不小了!"

I said "But, how did you do it?"

我說:"可是你如何做到的?"

He says "[You see] that wire sticking up?" "Yeah."

他說:"[你看到]那條伸出來的金屬線嗎?" "是的"

"You see the hole in the wheels?"

"你看到輪子上的小孔嗎?"

He didn't even know what they're called.

他甚至不知道那叫什麼

"I pushed on the hole, and pushed and pushed, and it went on."

"我把金屬線推進這個孔 推呀推 然後就裝上了"

I said "That's marvelous."

我說:"真是了不起"

When you say "Here, let daddy fix it for you.

當你說:"過來 讓爸爸幫你修好

Let daddy do this. Let mommy do that."

讓爸爸做這 讓媽媽做那"

[Then] you produce a big blob that does no thinking at all.

[於是]你造就了一個完全不會思考的大笨蛋

So put your kids...

因此你的孩子就…

I used to come running in the house

我過去經常回到家裡

to my little girl [and] say "What did you bring me?"

到我的小女兒那裡 [然後]問她:"你給我帶了什麼嗎?"

She said "I didn't bring you anything. I'm too little."

她說:"我沒有給你帶來什麼 我還小"

Kids are always thinking in terms of you bringing them something

小孩總是想著你帶給他們一些什麼

so when my little girl was three, she came in the shop

因此當我的小女兒三歲時 她走到一間商店

and I put a wrench on the nut the wrong way.

我把扳手放在螺帽上面 並放錯方向

You know what that means?

你知道這什麼意思嗎?

A wrench on a nut the wrong way?

A nut... A wrench is a [???]

一個螺帽… 扳手[???]

And I put it on... Then I put it on the wrong way again.

然後我放置好 又一次放錯方向

She's watching me. It's so obvious.

她正看著我 這太顯而易見了

She puts little hands on it. "That's no way to do it."

她伸手過來 說:"不是這樣做的"

I said "Is this all right?" The wrong way again, nothing works.

我說:"是這樣嗎?" 再次放錯方向 當然這行不通

"I'll have to show you." She put the wrench on the right way.

"我會告訴你如何做" 她把扳手放在正確方向

I did that so she wouldn't look up to me.

我這樣做就不會讓她全都聽我的

"Daddy knows everything." Sometimes he doesn't know anything.

"爸爸知道一切" 但有時也不一定知道

I used to come to my kids and ask them questions about...

我曾經問過我的孩子

"I can't get this door on. What do you suggest?"

"我不能關上這道門 你們有什麼建議嗎?"

"Well, I'm little

"嗯 我還小

but I think if you put a piece of wood under the door

但我想如果你把一塊木頭放在門的下面

to lift up to match the hinges."

Just put them in a situation.

只需要把他們帶入狀態

Kids of the future will be given responsibilities

未來的孩子們都要負責任

and they'll manage their own affairs.

One kid, when he goes into the woods

當一個孩子進入樹林

knows a lot about marine life in the stream.

他知道很多關於溪流裡水中生物的事情

Another kid knows plants. Another kid knows clouds.

其他孩子瞭解植物或者氣象

Each kid takes a turn at leadership.

每個孩子都可以領導他人

You have no permanent leader.

不會有永久的領袖

If you rotate the leadership, it's better for the kids. Bingo.

當輪流進行領導 這對孩子來說就比較好

Do you understand that?

I don't want to be a leader.

我不想成為一個領袖

I want to give you tools to think things.

我想教你思考事情的工具

You have to work on other people now.

現在你要和其他人一起處事

What if a guy doesn't want to go along with you?

如果你不想和一個人相處要怎麼辦呢?

Just say "I don't know how to reach that guy."

只要說:"我不知道如何與他相處"

That's what it means.

就是這個意思

See? You can call him names, say he's dumb or is a ...

明白嗎? 你可以罵他 說他是笨蛋或是…

Just say "I don't know how to reach him."

但只要說:"我不知道如何與他相處"

When I meet with people, if I can't reach them

當我和人們接觸時 如果我與他們合不來

I come at them another way.

我會用其他方法

If that doesn't work, I try another way

如果還不行 我會繼續嘗試

and I come back next week with a different way.

並在下周用不同的方法再來

When I used reason with my mother and a Japanese kid

當我和我的母親與一個日本孩子說道理時

it didn't work.

是說不通的

Reason and logic does not change people.

理性和邏輯不能改變人們

What changes people is your ability to reach them on their terms.

改變別人的東西 是你因地制宜與其相處的能力
